Various statistics error, mainly about uploaded files, on several wikis. A maintenance script has been run on all of them to fix that. See phab:T131306.

Annoying if the filter catches links. @Glaisher could you look at Special:AbuseLog/105544?

Hello. I'm really sorry about the inconvenience but the filter is really needed to catch the huge amount of spam we are receiving on this wiki. I spent sometime going through the hits and have come up with a new regex so that we it has less false positives. See .

File upload on test2wiki

test2wiki allows file upload, is that behavior is what we want?

https://test2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles https://test2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload - upload open to everybody. Please disable. Not much too test with uploads and massive violations of https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution:Licensing_policy 91.9.97.119 (talk) 01:57, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

If the files are not free they have to be deleted, as fair use cannot be established. If the files are free, they can be uploaded to Commons. 91.9.123.28 (talk) 11:24, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
Perhaps someone uses it to test UploadWizard?
Ping @Matmarex Dereckson (talk) 16:59, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
Maybe sufficient to restrict to admins. Normal users still can use testwiki, the primary test wiki, which also has many more admins to handle copyvios.
Also, since many wikis restrict upload to admins, it might be worth having a testwiki with restricted upload. 91.9.100.253 (talk) 19:27, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
Rephrase, create Phab?: https://test2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles https://test2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload - upload open to group user. As of now the counter for uploaded files on Special:Statistics for test2wiki is at 126 files and that for testwiki at 3,524 files, the latter is more files than 83% of the 'real' Wikipedias have. Suggest to restrict upload on test2wiki to group admin and uploader. Rational: 1) Reduce likelihood of copyvio and clean-up work for admins. testwiki already has upload open to group user, so that one might be sufficient for open testing. 2) It might be good to have test2wiki as one restricted upload test environment. 91.9.117.178 (talk) 11:39, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Oops yea, i just recently added these.. and now deleted "test" and "test2" again from the database used by wikistats.wmflabs.org. You can see more details on the phabricator tickets above. You can also feel free to just make tickets there and assign them if you want to report similar issues. Mutante (talk) 20:08, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
If you want to use Phabricator: You can use an existing Wiki(m|p)edia wiki user to login there and create tickets. You can then add the tag "Labs-project-Wikistats" and user Dzahn. That will be the most effective way to reach me and get the fastest response. Mutante (talk) 20:10, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

https://wikistats.wmflabs.org/display.php?t=wp&s=images_asc - Wikipedias sorted by file count. Is there a list available that shows file permissions for Wikipedias by project-language code? Probably most that have few files and no uploads since some months should have uploads restricted to admins or for zero-local-file-wikipedias maybe fully disabled. A table showing file count, admin count, last upload date, unused files count, upload permissions and existence of link from Wikidata EDP-item would be nice. 91.9.100.253 (talk) 22:22, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, on https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/highlight.php?file=InitialiseSettings.php you scroll to wgEnableUploads section.
By default, users are allowed to upload (setting at true). Some have it disabled (false).
The ideal situation for small wikis is the commonsupload list: allowed, but restricted to sysops. The list for such wikis is at https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/highlight.php?file=commonsuploads.dblist.
So in a nutshell, the wikis you seek are those not in the commonsupload.dblist file and not with a false value for wgEnableUploads. Dereckson (talk) 22:55, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

The above list has 305 items, I searched for some strings that are not language codes and reduced to 87. But this still contains tenwiki, wg_enwiki (both prefixes could be language codes, but here are not) and nostalgia (which might be restricted in some other ways). Would not like to repeat the semi-manual way. Another method is using this regex
/^[a-z]{0,3}([_][a-z]{2,4}){0,2}wiki$/gm
which on http://regexr.com/ matches 83 (exludes nostalgia, test, test2 and at least one unknown to me; includes ten and wg_en).
83 via regex:

Re T131306 / marking as solved

You marked this as solved. I don't know what effect that will have on the thread.(*) As of today ca. 150 Wikipedias have more than 10 local files and I may find more upload statistics errors.

(*) Now I know that I could not add the above text to User talk:Dereckson#h-T131306-2016-06-13T20:12:00.000Z 91.9.117.178 (talk) 11:18, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Message was "This topic is resolved, so further activity is not possible." 91.9.117.178 (talk) 11:18, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
Oh, sorry, I thought it was possible to reopen a solved conversation when needed. Dereckson (talk) 14:38, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
That might be a proposal to the devs. They could distinguish between Solved and Closed. 91.9.99.10 (talk) 12:08, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
The invitation "Reply to ..." and the input box are still there. Regarding phab:T142764 ListFiles in skwiki, maybe you can add
This Wikipedia has zero local media files now. That the file shows up in the list and in counters and stats leads to extra comments when talking about the zero-fileness of this WMF project.
PS: I tried to log in with a Wikimedia user account, but phab requires an email address. 91.9.99.10 (talk) 12:17, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Can you re-open T131306? I have a new one with broken stats: mhrwiki has 7 in list, 6 in stat. (may change soon, but the diff would remain) 91.9.100.60 (talk) 15:56, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Done, it has been reopened. Dereckson (talk) 23:58, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
new:Special:Statistics
= 19 vs
new:Special:ListFiles
= 18 91.9.100.60 (talk) 19:49, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
The above was written in wikicode-mode, even now when trying to write with nowiki-tags the interface does unwanted things, breaking the nowiki-tags when trying the preview.
NOWIKI-start
<nowiki>[[new:Special:Statistics]] = 19 vs [[new:Special:Statistics]] = 18</nowiki>
NOWIKI-end
Now without brackets used normally for linking:
new:Special:Statistics = 19 vs new:Special:Statistics = 18 91.9.100.60 (talk) 19:55, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
There is a link at the bottom right to switch between visual/code mode, as an [[]] icon. Dereckson (talk) 20:07, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Since you re-opened https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User%20talk%3ADereckson#h-T131306-2016-06-13T20%3A12%3A00.000Z allowing further re-count requests, this thread here, can be closed. The switch icon was used, behaviour when saving was unexpected, but that could be reported somehwere else if - after 3 months - the behaviour would still be the same as then. 77.179.25.193 (talk) 19:51, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I've made the [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T145279 changes you requested]. Could you please remove your comment? I fear it might have a negative effect on the willingness of other developers to engage the issue. Thank you. ~~~~ Acer (talk) 11:05, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

To track the history of the task is important. The fact we can found better merit than SEO to your suggestion would be interesting. So no, archive of this kind of elements is rather important and the Wikimedia movement doesn't engage in censorship activities. But I can discuss the issues with members of the community having commenting in the past Wikidata and Commons aspect and note their feedback to the task, if any, to make it move forward. How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Voting in the WMF Board Election

Hi,

I was surprised to see that you hadn't voted in the WMF Board Election yet. Have you reviewed m:Wikimedia Foundation elections/2022/Candidates at the list of candidates? I'm sure you'll notice some familiar names worth supporting. Jack Phoenix (Contact) 15:29, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

IMPORTANT: Admin activity review

Hello,

I hope that this message finds you well.

A global policy regarding the removal of advanced permissions (e.g.: administrator, bureaucrat, interface-admin, etc.) from inactive user accounts was adopted by community consensus in 2013. For that policy, inactivity is defined as having zero edits and zero administrative actions in a particular project for the last two years.

I am writing to you today because, to the best of our knowledge, your account has advanced permissions in mediawiki.org and meets the inactivity criteria from the global policy mentioned above.

Please reply at this Village Pump topic if you wish to keep all or some of your advanced permissions. If the community supports your continued access, your permissions will be kept. To the contrary, if you wish to resign all or some of your advanced permissions, you may request a removal of permissions on Meta-Wiki.

Please note that if there is no response from you by 2023-03-26, your advanced permissions on mediawiki.org will be removed by the stewards without further notice. You may regaing them using the usual local process.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or feel free to message us at the stewards' noticeboard.

Yours sincerely, --MA (talk) (via MassMessage) 17:13, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
