Yeah, I think it is highly likely to be Arion. I was going to fill in a checkuser request later today but if a straightforward block is the right policy then that’s good too. I feel like his idea with the Aliphotography account was to try to make us think he was connected to a different country, then transition into Brazil-related content later. This might just be repeating the trick with different countries…and both accounts created shortly after the previous sock is found and blocked. Tells a clear story to me unfortunately. Indeed. Very frustrating because it shows that all of Arion’s promises to change - e.g. not to break the two nomination rule - were just deceit so he could get unblocked (he had four up at once with these socks!) Vandalism of FPC by spamming it with poor material, honestly. It makes me sad because there shouldn’t necessarily be anything wrong with creating an account and immediately joining FPC. Hallo Cmao, thanks for reviewing the picture. I want to inform you, that I added the following comment:
Cmao20 remarks, that "the horizon falls away quite drastically" and that's "obvious enough" flaw that he can't support. In reality, the horizon does not fall, it is even. The reason for this "optical illusion" is, if you look at this place on a map that at this point the shoreline bends from northwest to southwest. The apparent bending of the horizon is therefore not due to the incorrect panorama setting, but is geographically based on the course of the shoreline. --Llez (talk) 06:10, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

Hi Cmao20, regarding your comment on Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Huli wigman.jpg, I'm new to the process, so I was wondering if you had any further thoughts on what sort of pictures meet that? There are a few of other New Guinea individuals that look decent to my eye (although they are not Huli wigmen) and have higher sizes than the Huli wigman photo, I've galleried them here. Hi CMD, thank you very much for your comment. I'm going to give you an honest review for all the pictures. In short, yes, I think some have FP potential.

• 1 would be a weak oppose from me. I think it's quite cute but the composition is maybe a little bit cluttered, with one of the kids' faces hidden behind another. The hand in the top left corner and the other object in the same corner are a bit distracting. The quality is okay but not perfect, a bit of noise and unsharpness, and that makes it hard for me to overlook some of the flaws. It would also need a better title for FP, 'adorable' is too emotive and not descriptive enough.

• 2 is a moderate support. Image quality still not perfect, some noise, but no blur, nice composition, though I do think the crop is a little bit high, I'd like to see a bit more of his body - more curve on the arm would be more satisfying. This one could also do with a better title. Still, FP for me.

• 3 is a firm support from me, even though the image quality is flawed. Great composition and intense expression. Again, title needs changing. I'll nominate this one if you don't, though. I really like it.

• 4 is a support from me. Nice composition, nice slice of life photo, good quality (no significant noise this time). Much better title.

• I fear that you will struggle with 5 because of the blown highlights on his nose ring and the shallow depth of field.

• 6 is an oppose from me unfortunately. A fair bit of noise, and the wires spoil the composition.

• 7 is one I'm honestly unsure about. I really like the composition but again the image quality is not high, this camera does seem prone to significant luminance noise, and in this case it means there is little detail on the faces of the two people at the back. It would need a crop to remove the distracting blue object on the right hand side. I also think the highlights have been taken back too much and the sky looks too grey, so overall it would be a weak oppose from me unfortunately.

• 8 is probably spoiled by the fact that the focus has been missed on the head, hence oppose.

• 9 has some potential and I think could be FP but it would first need some work to remove the purple chromatic aberrations that are quite prominent across the picture, and I also think the disembodied arm on the left would need to be cropped out. That done, though, it'd be quite an impressive composition. Quality is otherwise fine.

• 10 is a firm support from me, in spite of the noise. See how, in contrast to some of the others, the subject is well-isolated from the background, and there are no distracting elements in the composition.

• 11 is probably a weak oppose. The highlights have been lowered too much in the background so the sky appears a dull, featureless grey. Image quality is not the highest.

• 12 is probably too small for FP given the fact that the details aren't 100% crisp at full 6 megapixel size.

So in short, from your list, I would say 2, 3, 4 and 10 are the best prospects for FP. Together with 9, but that would need a bit more editing first. Also, before they are nominated they will need a little bit of work to make sure they have descriptive and useful titles and are well categorised.

I'm also tagging Aristeas and Radomianin for comments as I remember they have had interest in festival and folklore images in the past and they always have good feedback anyway. Cmao20 (talk) 19:14, 11 July 2025 (UTC)

At the moment, I'm recovering from a second spinal surgery this year and currently undergoing rehabilitation, so I can only contribute via smartphone and don't have access to my calibrated monitor, but I'd still like to share a brief first impression:

2 and 4 may have solid FP potential in my view. 3 and 9 are the most powerful in terms of emotional expression, but both have significant technical shortcomings that would need to be addressed before any nomination.

Once I'm back home, I'll be happy to offer detailed feedback or editing suggestions, should CMD wish to create an updated or derivative version.

Thank you both for your comments. I've added numbers to the images to match those used here. Regarding the title of 2, "Face painting" is used as a verb, as you can see from this video the individual in the photograph is in the process of painting their face while using a mirror. Unfortunately I can't immediately see for 3 what other specific information there is, other than that it was taken in Enga province, and similarly for 9 there is no further information at the original site. For 10 however, we have quite a clear understanding based on this caption, as it given the village of origin and the event where the photo was taken (the Mount Hagen singsing festival). Hi Cmao20, I just wanted to share a helpful tip with you. When a picture I nom gets featured, I usually add some cats to make sure it appears in relevant FP category galleries. I just did so for some FPs nom'd by you: , , , ; I believe it is easiest done by the nominator right after the image becomes FP. Though FPC regulars like Poco often add such categories themselves, many contributors (esp. those who don't participate much outside of uploading pictures) don't, and FPs by them are unlikely to be adequately categorised unless you do so. Language/style questions

Hello Cmao20, thank you very much for your interest in FPCBot improvements and in general your great commitment to FPC and Commons!

I have a little question/plea. When editing the code of FPCBot, I am sometimes unsure whether a certain message printed by the bot is grammatically correct and/or stylistically OK. It would be very useful if I could ask a native speaker about the correct wording. Could you help me here? (I will not bother you too often.) For example right now I wonder whether this hint (which is used by the bot when closing a nomination with several alternatives) is good English or not:

Note: this candidate has several alternatives, thus if featured the alternative parameter needs to be specified.

Perhaps just 'Note: this candidate has several alternatives. Thus, if featured, the correct alternative needs to be specified when closing the nomination.' I know that 'alternative parameter' is technically correct because what we're really asking is to fill in the correct section in the template, but I don't think the wording 'alternative parameter' gives anyone who doesn't already know how to do this any clues as to how to do it, so it is probably just better to say plainly what we mean. After thinking it over I fear that people want a little hint about how the correct alternative needs to be specified. Therefore I have used your wording, but replaced the final “when closing the nomination” by “with the alternative=... parameter”. Here you see the result. You could be right, Aristeas. I think the problem we have is that to explain it clearly to those who don't know how to do this, we'd need to include quite a lot of text! A clear explanation would be 'Note: this candidate has several alternatives. Thus, if featured, the code 'alternative=' in this template needs to be followed by the file name of the chosen alternative.' But maybe that's a bit too long, I'm not sure. If we include a hint it must be as comprehensible as possible for all users (the nerds do not need the hint, of course); it makes no sense to use technical terms like “parameter”, although we cannot avoid “template”.
