Title page with frame

I am not sure which editors here know how to place text for a title page into an image frame. This page has the frame image at the desired size, but needs the text content formatted to fit withing the frame. --EncycloPetey (talk) 13:57, 1 April 2025 (UTC)

I think this is at least a good approximation compared to the problematic version. If you want me to tinker with it more, let me know. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:20, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
Thanks! --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:25, 1 April 2025 (UTC)

Piggybacking on to this request since it's the same issue. On Page:Acadiensis Q1.djvu/66, the overflow is working fine and the image scaled properly to the text. When the page is transcluded, however, (see Acadiensis/Volume 1/Number 2/In Bohemia) the image rescales in a way that the text no longer fits or aligns properly. This is true across all four layout options. Any thoughts on how to handle it? Tcr25 (talk) 16:19, 2 April 2025 (UTC)

Fixed! The issue was that the width=600px was not applying, because as the template doc says, in {{overfloat image}} all template parameters are hard-coded with "px" at the end (probably because mediawiki only lets us use px for images). So, width=600px actually meant "width:600pxpx", which is invalid CSS and therefore had no effect. — Alien 3

I'm thinking it's already in the optimal place, at the top of the page like it is. Maybe we could use formatting like what's at the bottom of Help:Contents, to make sure everyone sees it. — Alien 3

The current placement above the list of parameters (but before those parameters are defined) is suboptimal because it scroll up off screen when one is looking at the bit explaining what to put where. I'd find the warning much more discoverable next to those definitions. I'm not sure embiggening the text would be as effective as having the caution next to where we're talking about which parameters used pixel-based measurement. Tcr25 (talk) 11:49, 3 April 2025 (UTC)

Importing .csv and .text file data with Chinese characters into a template

This index Index:Dictionary of the Foochow Dialect.pdf had partly transcribed by another Chinese project in 2019. They got the data by crowdsourcing and compiled into "DFDCharacters.csv" for pages from 1748 to 1874 and "DFDRadicals.txt" from page 1742 to 1747. Source files can be found from this Github. However, the .csv file can't render the Chinese characters correctly. Besides, I have no idea on how to import the .csv and .txt data into the wiki template "Template:DFD index". Are there any tools that I can use to do these jobs? Any help is very appreciated, thank you. Cerevisae (talk) 14:53, 8 April 2025 (UTC)

This is a pretty ropey answer, but I know that there are tools to convert CSV to a spreadsheet (pretty trivial, Excel, Google Sheets, and OpenOffice can all do this), then tools to convert spreadsheets to HTML tables, then HTML tables to MediaWiki. :/ There is no way to directly upload a CSV or TXT here or automatically convert them locally. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:18, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
Justin (koavf), yes, converting it directly to a Wiki template would be hard.Cerevisae (talk) 12:28, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
There are CSV to Mediawiki converters online. If you have the data in a spreadsheet it's also possible to convert it straight to Mediawiki using online converters. (In fact, with the right formulas you can do the conversion in the spreadsheet itself.) Arcorann (talk) 01:09, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
I could probably make something to parse the data and turn it into the format used on the pages, if you don't mind. There are a couple of non-trivial bits to note, and it'll probably require parsing all of the .csv, .txt and .html files to get as much of the info out as possible. Arcorann (talk) 01:07, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
Arcorann, that would be awesome! Thanks for your offer! Cerevisae (talk) 05:31, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
A CSV file is just a text file separated by commas. If the data is in there, the question is whether the program can read it.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:06, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
Arcorann, thanks for your inspiration! I converted .csv file into excel, grouped the data with the same Chinese characters together and then added prefix "DFD Index" to the Chinese characters column and prefix "|" and suffix"}}" to the Roman characters column. The end result is Page:Dictionary of the Foochow Dialect.pdf/1783. but would need some adjustments and add the value "n" for some of the Chinese characters in the final tidy up. Thanks again! Help adding a newspaper article

I managed to make the index Index:St Andrews Standard Nov 3 1875.pdf, but I want to turn the first article on the first page into an article here as it's the only one worth my time to proofread; I created Deer Island for it but not really sure how to enclose the portion of the text...muchless crop off the partial-left-page on the scan, etc. Thanks for help. Fundy Isles Historian - J (talk) 02:17, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

  • You have proofread the text at Deer Island from the article-specific Index:/PDF Index:St Andrews Standard Nov 3 1875 Deer Island.pdf. In my experience, this is usually considered acceptable on its own; even though we prefer full works, we have historically recognized in the context of newspapers that this is not always feasible. Since you have created the index for the whole issue, however, your work at the article-only index should be moved over to the first page of that index. The only other work for that index you should even bother doing is to create the header at the top of the first page just to provide some bibliographical information about your article. I am not sure what you mean by “enclose the portion of the text”—could you explain? As for cropping off the partial page scan, I could do that if you really want it, but that’s not a problem in terms of transclusion—while it doesn’t look too pretty it doesn’t inhibit future transcription work for the index. Adding characters into the bar below the edit window

Below the edit window there is a bar with special characters. The default group is "Insert", but when rolled down, other groups like "Wiki markup" can be chosen. At the bottom there is an empty group "User", which I suppose is meant for users to add characters of their choice. Hosting translations on Commons

Hello all,

Hopefully a simple enough PD question here. This copy of Heidi (File:Heidi (IA heidi00spyr 7).pdf) translated by Elisabeth Pausinger Stork was uploaded to Commons (back in 2020). However, the Austrian translator's date of death was 1968. Hence, my question: Does Commons ever considered the translator when determining "the source country of the work", or is the source country always determined by the original author(s)? Depending on the answer, should this copy of Heidi instead by hosted here?

Thanks, TeysaKarlov (talk) 22:50, 25 April 2025 (UTC)

Many PDF scans from IA that have been uploaded to Commons have been auto-uploaded by User:Fæ, who assumes that the copyright status on IA is correct, and does not check for copyright status against Commons standards. Sometimes those files must be relocated here, or deleted entirely, once a copyright review is made.
This particular edition was published in the US, and likely would be considered of US origin for Commons copyright status. --EncycloPetey (talk) 23:10, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
@EncycloPetey Thanks for the reply. To clarify, does that mean publication location can sometimes outweigh the nationality of both authors and translators when determining source country? Regards, TeysaKarlov (talk) 23:35, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
For Commons, yes, sometimes. --EncycloPetey (talk) 00:00, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

TOC dotted lines help

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong in searching help I have searched both template:toc, "template toc dotted", and I searched the Scriptorium Help, no avail.

(tangential note: can we get phrase match previews with highlighting on Scriptorium Help archives - a wall of text of subject lines is often confusing and overwhelming - it would be quite helpful if the phrases that match were visually salient.)

I want to help validate Page:Ethics (Moore 1912).djvu/2, but IMO the dotted TOC lines, with the authors' names aligned right, seems far more visually accessible than having the dotted separation between the title and author names removed. Grayautumnday (talk) 22:10, 27 April 2025 (UTC)

The template you're looking for is Template:Dotted TOC page listing. I've included an example below to insert in Page:Ethics (Moore 1912).djvu/2.
{{Dotted TOC page listing||[title]|[author]|col3-width=10em}} DraftSaturn15 (talk) 23:02, 27 April 2025 (UTC)

Use rather {{TOC row 2dot-1}} & co. — Alien 3

@Grayautumnday @Alien333 In this case, given that you want left aligned content in both cells, I would recommend Template:SimpleTOC rather than TOC row 2dot-1 & co. (by default, I don't believe there is a double left aligned TOC row 2dot-1 variant, but I could be mistaken). I have modified the page in question and setup the style sheet accordingly. Regards, TeysaKarlov (talk) 20:23, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
In general for stuff like this, seems to me to be a use case for index CSS.
SimpleTOC doesn't exactly fit here: if you look closely, it uses divs, not tables, so athough the right cells are left-aligned, their left edges are not aligned.
Wherehas the TOC rows allow this, as it uses a table. Just gotta add .wst-toc-row-2dot-1 td:last-child { text-align:left !important; } (just realised the TOC rows use inline CSS for this, which is a bad idea because a) it takes more room and b) forces users to use !important. I'll try and fix that at some point). — Alien 3

@Alien333 SimpleTOC doesn't exactly fit here: if you look closely, it uses divs, not tables, so a[l]though the right cells are left-aligned, their left edges are not aligned. Interesting, I had not noticed this before. Out of curiosity, why does this happen, and is there a way to fix this within SimpleTOC?
That aside, good to know that there is a way to CSS target via .wst-toc-row-2dot-1, although I assume this would apply to all TOC row 2dot-1's in the entire Index?
Regards, TeysaKarlov (talk) 02:47, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
P.S. Wait, are you sure they are misaligned? It looked like they were for a second, but then I took a screenshot and cropped the image, and they seem aligned according to the rectangular crop (image not uploaded). I am now not sure what I have talked myself into/out of thinking. Regards, TeysaKarlov (talk) 02:53, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
This is {{SimpleTOC}}, with intentionally very different sizes of right cells:
A
1
B
177147
C
94143178827
You see that on the right, the left of the "1" is not at all at the same level as that of the "177..." or of the "941..." The technical reason is that {{SimpleTOC}} uses divs, as in just containers, and so the lines are effectively independent from each other; only using native HTML capacities such as tables I think allows us to get this instead:
A

I assume this would apply to all TOC row 2dot-1's in the entire Index?: no. you can add a specific class to a specific TOC (by giving it to the {{TOC begin}}s' class parameter), and then target with .wst-toc-table:not(.classtoexclude) .wst-toc-row-2dot-1 [...].
SimpleTOC is good, as the name says, because it's simple, and it helps with absurdly long TOCs.
It does take away some functionality, as can be seen here, so I'd prefer the TOC rows when we can. — Alien 3

@Alien333 Hmmm. To clarify, did you ever look at this page: Page:Ethics (Moore 1912).djvu/2? I am well aware that by default, the cells of SimpleTOC are neither left aligned nor share a left edge. These default settings are useful in replicating many TOCs, as not all TOCs are tables (and so SimpleTOC avoids needing TOC row raggeds). But for this TOC, I intentionally modified the style sheet, Index:Ethics (Moore 1912).djvu/styles.css, well before posting my original comment, to obtain the desired results for this TOC (left aligned contents in 'cells' sharing a left edge, by setting a fixed width on the latter cell - not ideal, but hardly the end of the world, as only one cell is fixed width). Don't get me wrong, I completely understand if you had many other things to do, and so never looked at my actual usage of SimpleTOC... but still, please clarify, as I otherwise remain confused.
Many thanks for spelling out how to add specific classes to specific TOCs, it has been something I have been wondering about for a while (for SimpleTOCs actually), but good to know in general.
Regards, TeysaKarlov (talk) 06:39, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
I did look at the page, but not at the fixed-width. Apologies for that. (using fixed-widths can cause issues, as it makes assumptions about the width of text in ems, but eh, it's true it does work, and width of text in ems is not an assumption that will be often wrong). — Alien 3

endnotes

does anyone have a suggestion for a mostly-validated wikisource text that has an Endnotes Appendix with all endnotes listed following the chapter each endnote appears in? -- or any similar text that compiles some amount of endnotes in some way, one that is validated enough to see examples of effective template/tag use?

I'm wanting to start putting in anchors for Index:Code And Other Laws of Cyberspace Version 2 0.pdf in the endnotes section so that I can simply link endnote numbers in prior pages to their intended targets in the endnotes section.

Is that even the most effective way to handle the endnotes in the case of texts that collect endnotes in an appendix? Grayautumnday (talk) 22:22, 27 April 2025 (UTC)

Do you mean something like My War Memoirs/Index? --Jan Kameníček (talk) 22:35, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
no, this appendix has chapter headings. There is also a topic index (as in your example text) but that is wholly separate to the endnotes appendix. Here's the first page of the Endnotes appendix (which contains the endnotes for the prefaces and for the start of the first chapter.
I need a text that puts all the endnotes at the end of the book instead of at the end of individual chapters.
Though a text that collects endnotes at the end of each chapter would likely be very helpful. Grayautumnday (talk) 00:10, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

@Grayautumnday You might be interested in Template:Authority reference for this. Some examples include Index:The history of Witchcraft and demonology.djvu and Index:Imperialism (Lenin).djvu, using the same referencing method in both. Neither is mostly validated, but both have been transcluded (either in parts or in full), so you can still see how the referencing system works. Note that in the case of Imperialism, the Last Stage of Capitalism, the references have both been transcluded as conventional text in an Appendix section, and are also included as footnotes (with {{smallrefs}}) at the end of each transcluded chapter. Help with unusual characters on LA Wikisource

Hi there,

Apologies for asking here, I have flagged on LA Wikisource of course. On EN wikisource, you have a template {{longs}} to produce ſ on the transcription page, and by default, s on the ebook page. users on EN WS can toggle these on and off.

In this book, De principe, there are a number of unusual characters that could do with toggling: ſ (s); ß (ss); ẽ (en / em) ũ (un / um) æ (ae) ę (ae) õ (on / om) ã (an / am) œ (oe). In order to implement this:

(1) What would LA Wikisource need to enable for user toggling of special characters?

(2) Who would I contact (assuming this is an admin task)? JimKillock (talk) 10:04, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

I think I have figured this out, being that LA WS would need MediaWiki:Gadget-Visibility.js installed but if there is more to it than that, please do shout. JimKillock (talk) 11:55, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

How do I put a link containing an equal sign inside a template? I've tried using nowiki html tags but they also remove the link. Page:Explanatory Notes - Welsh Elections (Coronavirus) Act 2021 (ASC 2021-2 qp).pdf/17 for example ToxicPea (talk) 21:08, 5 May 2025 (UTC)

Maybe I'm missing something in the documentation, but the only if/then statement is "if you have a character from a specific language or script, then choose that" (e.g. Korean or Hebrew). If you insert {{symbol missing}} then I think it's supposed to have the tracking category, near as I can tell. Can you give an example of a page that shouldn't be tracked but is? —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:59, 10 May 2025 (UTC)
