Trimming Down the List

Right now, there are 14,138 entries in the word list, including lots and lots of doubles, terms that are vague, and some amazingly obscure terms. As i understand it, this is supposed to be a book to teach Esperanto to beginners, not an Esperanto-English (and vice versa) dictionary. Rather than overwhelm beginners with thousands and thousands of words - the vast majority of which they'll probably never use - I think it makes more sense to include a more streamlined word list here, and then link to a really good Esperanto-English dictionary online, like this one or this one (although, that last one worries me because it shows ten random words on the main page, and the ten i got on my first try included: scrotum, doomsday, GLBT, "to have balls", "toss the salad (anal-oral contact)" and "stop moping around and do something!"... which sounds like an interesting day's worth of vocabulary, to say the least).

i am going to make a couple templates for marking up each item in the list that may be problematic. To start with, i am going to make templates for:

• Duplicate terms
• Overly obscure terms
• Vague or poorly defined terms
• Terms that appear to be in error or that need to be checked by an expert ("attention needed")

And possibly a couple more.

All of these templates, and any more that get added later, will be in the category Esperanto/Word list templates. Documentation on how to use the templates will be on the template pages themselves. i'll get the ball rolling, though, so you can see how it works. i suppose you could say mi havos kojonojn, and mi ne lasos vin deprimi, reagos!--Indiana (talk) 05:26, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

OK, the situation is worse than I thought - the page is so big that it is causing problems with the MediaWiki software. It is currently #2 on the list of the longest pages, and for no good reason because it simply mirrors the list available here. So, I thought mi havigos kojonojn, and do something aggressive to fix things.

I think people are much more comfortable adding items than they are removing them. Therefore, I put together a minimal list, with the hope that people might add reasonable entries... rather than have to trim unreasonable ones (by a factor of 10!!!). The list is based on this one (which can "be freely copied and distributed"), with slight modifications - I have kept all of the entries in the Baza Radikaro Oficiala list, dropped a few of the ones that glossary added, and added a few new ones. I think it's a really good starting point.

But wait! There's more! Because I am trimming the list down from 14000 to less than 700, I added some extra value. The new list highlights the endings (so the base is clear), and marks up which parts of speech they are... and even includes usage examples. I will also add sections describing the part of speech abbreviations, and links to other word lists.

If all of my changes (most of which will not be visible right away) are just unacceptable, and you want the original 14000 word list back, you can always copy it from the source site again.--Indiana (talk) 03:09, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Baza Radikaro Oficiala

If you want to add new words to the list, but don't know whether you should add the baza-radikaro-oficiala=1 parameter to your new word entry, you can check the actual Baza Radikaro Oficiala on Wikisource. It's not the easiest thing to search in, because the root is separated from the ending (like "pom'o"), and compound roots are split up (like "ter/pom'o"), but you can figure it out. Unless you know that it's in the Baza Radikaro Oficiala, don't add the baza-radikaro-oficiala=1 tag. --Indiana (talk) 05:41, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
