Where was the change discussed? Leaderboard (talk) 08:04, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Project:Proposal for changing logo of MediaWiki, 2020. Mainframe98 talk 08:28, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
@Leaderboard It was discussed at Project:Proposal for changing logo of MediaWiki, 2020 for quite some time. It was only yesterday and today that the changes were actually made to the MediaWiki software and deployed to the WMF wikis. Wiki13 (talk) 08:32, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
OK, well I thought a change as major as the logo would be advertised more widely (SiteNotice?), as somehow I've missed this again.
Edit: I've actually voted on the Round 1 proposals, hmm. Leaderboard (talk) 08:36, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
It was in a site notice (or maybe two two?) here over several weeks. But it was also months ago, and memories fade. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 17:52, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
MediaWiki:Sitenotice - I can't find any notice relevant to the logo in the histories... Leaderboard (talk) 18:16, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
It was on wikitech-l, which is really the mailing list of record for MediaWiki. Legoktm (talk) 18:14, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
I would have expected it to be also on mediawiki-announce, as this change impacts basically everyone. Leaderboard (talk) 18:16, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
That list is described as "Low-traffic list for announcements of new MediaWiki releases and security updates." - this doesn't seem to match that description. Anyways, it'll get included in tomorrow's security release announcement. Legoktm (talk) 20:25, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, some people I've talked to didn't know about it (and they manage Wikis).
Regardless, it's a nice logo. Elli (talk) 09:47, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
It's a, well... strange day to change the logo. April Fool's day :) Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 10:27, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
The logo was changed on 2021-03-31: https://sal.toolforge.org/log/a1qGingBa_6PSCT9rB51 But you likely only saw the change on 2021-04-01, yes. :-) Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 17:51, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
Announced on April 1. Elli (talk) 18:05, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
That was actually well into April 1 here in Central Europe (UTC+2)… Good thing I’m so lost with time due to sitting in my room almost 24/7 for a year now that I didn’t even think about this being an April Fool’s day thing. 😉 (But seriously, some notice a few days ago at least here on Village Pump would have been useful.) Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:34, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
I can also see "2021-04-01" as the announcement date on the main page (in the news section) Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 21:18, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
Yup. Looked like a joke. Oh well lol Elli (talk) 21:18, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
I had no idea about this change either, but the logo looks nice. Tropicalkitty (talk) 18:04, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
I thought I was being trolled for a second, lol Elli (talk) 12:40, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
April Fool's day has been my first thought as well.
  • Even more since site logo has not been changed the same day. Right now it is the yellow flower with brackets.
  • Deployment should have been synchronized, site logo first, and never ever do someting serious on April 1st.
I almost reverted my colleague who updated our templates today. PerfektesChaos (talk) 16:00, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
Count me among those thinking April fools. This morning my favicon updated but the actual logo hadn't changed. Since I generally don't land on the MediaWiki main page I didn't see the announcement and had to search around to find the explanation.
I also had to Ctrl+F5 to force a refresh before the new logo appeared.
Agreed that regardless, it's a nice logo. Peculiar Investor (talk) 18:10, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
It has been updated. Clear your cache. Elli (talk) 16:35, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
Ah, okay, but it updated now without clearing my cache. Something happened very recently. PerfektesChaos (talk) 17:17, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
Yup. Elli (talk) 18:04, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
The new logo and favicon still are not displaying in Chrome on my iPad, so maybe the cache busting settings are not working as expected. Peculiar Investor (talk) 23:37, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
Oh well, enjoy the nostalgia? Elli (talk) 01:36, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Permission to post article in mainspace

Hi there, I work in the software development department of Wikimedia Deutschland and I'm trying to create a page here:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikibase/Institutional_requirements_for_Wikibase

Unfortunately, I receive this message when I try to publish on the page: "We're sorry, your edit was not saved as it matched the rule: Prevent new users from creating articles in mainspace. This usually happens because the type of edit you made is often done by vandals and spammers. If that is not the case, we apologise. If you believe your edit was constructive, please file a request here, explaining what you were trying to do."

Is there some kind of list of approved accounts I can be added to so as to allow me to edit this page both now and in the future?

Thanks in advance for your help Georgina Burnett (WMDE) (talk) 13:34, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

I've added you to the Autopatrolled users, which should stop filter 83 from stopping you from creating any pages. Mainframe98 talk 13:40, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

I was trying to make a new page called Wikimarkup tutorial but it will not let me. Here is what I have so far in my test:

This is a guide on working with WikiText (aka WikiMarkup)

Step One

Head over to the wiki page you want to edit for this example I`ll say mediawiki.org/User:Caldwmic002/sandbox, then your gonna want to tap Edit Source in the top right corner.

Srep Two

Type some text, when you want to make a section type ==<Name>== and a su-section is === <Name> === Caldwmic002 (talk) 20:58, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

There is already ample wikitext documentation. Clump (talk) 21:01, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

Reorganize sections in Manual:Configuration settings

DefaultSettings.php was reorganized in gerrit:674743.

It should be applied to Manual:Configuration settings (and Template:SettingSummarySection). Shirayuki (talk) 06:43, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

Maybe, but that patch won't go out until MediaWiki 1.37, so the documentation would be confusingly different from "reality" for all sysadmins for nearly a year from now. Perhaps we should wait? Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 20:50, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
But then people can download the alpha version of MediaWiki 1.37 even now... Leaderboard (talk) 16:38, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
Sure. People can also run rm -rf on their servers. We very strongly discourage that and don't support them, either. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 17:07, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
Of course, you don't have to support rm -rf since that has nothing to do with MediaWiki. All I was saying is that since the possibility of downloading the alpha version of MW1.37 exists right now, it is not a bad idea to start updating documentation (after all, one can segregate for MW1.36 and below and MW1.37+ - this approach is followed elsewhere as well). Leaderboard (talk) 17:32, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
I think people may navigate through our pages looking for settings to configure related to a specific area (security, database, etc).
If this reorganization was done, it was done because the previous categorization was wrong, outdated or not practical. It doesn't change the meaning of the affected settings. It just puts them to where really belong. Thus, I think the change is beneficial for everyone even if they don't run our current master.
What's the problem if they don't actually match what their DefaultSettings.php say? None that I'm thinking of. I don't even think people will look for matching that categorization on a code file on this wiki. What's the benefit? Better grouping of those settings to find them easier.
For me, I support this change now. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 21:22, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

Page creation request

Hi! I request you to create a page for Gyaanipedia. It is a wiki farm, having various language wikis. So I think like Miraheze and WikiApiary, Gyaanipedia is also eligible to be here as it also uses MediaWiki software for its wikis. So it's my humble request kindly create a page for Gyaanipedia. Thanking you with due respect. Pokai (talk) 13:03, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

I don't see how it's a wiki farm. It doesn't allow users to create new wikis there. It's a single wiki. Please add your wiki to WikiApiary and move along.
MediaWiki.org is not a site to advertise other wikis or wiki farms. That's what WikiApiary is for.
About Miraheze, Brickimedia, etc, I wonder why do we have pages about them here. They seem pretty irrelevant and can potentially open a can of worms here. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 20:05, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
Copyright is not relevant in this discussion. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 16:38, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
Excuse me @Kuber Motion Picture Entertainment Film Production why did you jumped in my discussion? Pokai (talk) 16:54, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
Dear Ciencia I don't found creation of page Gyaanipedia is an advertisement as the English version of this wiki which is the main one, generates a huge traffic everyday with having more than 222k articles so from which aspect it looks like an ad. I don't know why all Wikimedia wikis just kick out talent in seconds and if for example a corrupt politician establish a company and invite all notable medias for coverage then his company will be called as notable in few days or may be months. Don't you think that this is wrong? Pokai (talk) 17:02, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
This is offtopic. Your wiki is not a farm, and has no reason to stay here Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 17:05, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
I am not inclined to grant this request either citing others. Leaderboard (talk) 19:53, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi!

I wrote a whole wikipedia article but unfortunately can't publish it due to the following error:

We're sorry, your edit was not saved as it matched the rule: Prevent new users from creating articles in mainspace. This usually happens because the type of edit you made is often done by vandals and spammers. If that is not the case, we apologise.

Would anyone be so kind to help me figure out how to publish articles for review. I would love to finish the one I'm working on. Thank you in advance! Dmusicd (talk) 21:48, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

The page you are trying to create is out of scope for this wiki. Please read Project:About. Clump (talk) 21:54, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

A gadget tool adding structured descriptions to Wikimedia Categories

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Hello,

I have developed a gadget tool named StructuredCategories that allows to generate a structured description for a Wikimedia Category (e.g. Categories in Wikipedia, Wikinews, Wikispecies and other Wikimedia projects) based on the most common Wikidata statements of its direct members. The JavaScript Source Code is available at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Csisc/StructuredCategories.js. I ask if this tool can be added to Preferences in Wikimedia Projects. Csisc (talk) 23:28, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

Each community must decide for itself whether and how it will use that gadget; to that end, you'll have to start a discussion on each community you want to see the gadget used on (for example, for English Wikipedia, the appropriate venue would probably be the technical village pump). ディノ千?!☎ Dinoguy1000 08:14, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
Excellent. I will do this. Csisc (talk) 11:28, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
