Template:Note
RESOLVED | |
Thanks for your help on this. |

This appears to be a tiny but complicated template. The icons should be updated as most of the other templates on this wiki. However, we are stuck or do not have much time to dig in. See this discussion. Thanks and cheers kgh (talk) 14:34, 10 June 2019 (UTC)
- I copied the styles from the MediaWiki page to Template:Note/styles.css, which is clearly belongs to the template, so it’s way easier to find. It is also not a normal CSS page, so it can be freely edited, you can change the icons. (It’s not yet removed from the MediaWiki page, which should be done to avoid confusion, but the template subpage version takes precedence anyway.) Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:07, 10 June 2019 (UTC)
- Great, thank you for making this much better. Cool! However I failed creating a new globe icon so I do not even try to give the notepad a shot. I leave this to others since I hardly work with icons an such. kgh (talk) 13:25, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
- We have <figure-inline class="mw-default-size">

- Well yeah, found this one and wanted to change the colour. However the file is crambled when I open it in Inkscape. Took the png-Version but this could not be resized. Anyways I am really not got at this. kgh (talk) 15:16, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

- Maybe a bit late, but what about Yellow50 from the style guide (#fc3)? It’s closer to the original bulb’s color; the current orange/greenish version (as seen at Template:Note) looks quite bad to me. Maybe the background color should be changed as well. Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:16, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
- This is starting to make me really angry. This whole template is a complete mess. Now how do I center the notepad? The padding to the bottom looks really shitty. kgh (talk) 16:18, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

- Thanks a lot for bearing with me. I still believe this was a 10 minute task for one person which now took four persons over an hour but sometimes things are just like this I guess. Anyways this is now somewhat sane. kgh (talk) 18:20, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

I would like to enable a UserFeedback Gadget on MediaWiki which is currently only deployed on Wikitech. With the help of this Gadget, a feedback form will be shown at the bottom of any page that is in the API namespace. Stats collected through this form will inform if the ongoing improvements to MediaWiki API docs are helpful or not! More information is here in the Phabricator task: T225584. I would like to know if there are any concerns anyone has in doing so. Thanks! User:SSethi_(WMF) 03:31, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

problem: links to the contents of release notes lead to empty pages
1. Page https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.18 uses two ways to access the release notes and one fails because the oldest notes are no longer found in //phabricator.wikimedia.org but present under //Gerrit.wikimedia.org . This last could be the only url.

A universal (? Gerrit.wikimedia.org) way to find the Release Note should be proposed.
Christian Wia (talk) 17:56, 16 June 2019 (UTC)
- REL1_18 branch was removed. Now it only exists the individual release tags. Basically, you need to know the latest release number of a version instead of the generic major version:

Where to document extension hooks
Some extension hooks are documented under Manual:Hooks/, but I believe it pollutes this area since it's mainly for documentation of core hooks. Any objection for me to move hooks under a place like Extension:{ExtensionName}/Hooks/{HookName}? It would use Template:ExtensionHook, so hooks would still be able to found under Category:Extension hooks. SamanthaNguyen (talk) 18:41, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
- That sounds like a good idea. Anything better than having two different approaches.
- Either way, this should be formalized on Best practices for extensions#Documentation; something along the lines of:
* MUST: Document available hooks under Extension:ExtensionName/Hooks/HookName (if any)
—Mainframe98 talk 19:02, 21 June 2019 (UTC)- Sounds good as well, I'll add that bullet point on the page. Recently just added Template:Undocumented Extension Hook so as not to pollute Category:Undocumented MediaWiki hooks as well (they now go under Category:Undocumented Extension hooks) SamanthaNguyen (talk) 19:25, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Translate extension breakage; redirects needed
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I sub-page-with-redirects moved Wikimedia Audiences to Wikimedia Product (as the department has been renamed). However, sadly the Translate extension doesn't do this, and so didn't back-create redirects or move the talk pages. This means ~1300 moved pages lack redirects. Many of these shouldn't get redirects (e.g.Translations:Wikimedia Audiences/92/hi to Translations:Wikimedia Product/92/hi — never used apart) and for some it's less important (e.g. Wikimedia Audiences/zh to Wikimedia Product/zh — people just use Special:MyLanguage/), but a bunch should. I've made some manually, but does anyone have a bot they want to run to fix this? Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 23:48, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
- I'm happy to use JJMC89 bot to create the redirects. JJMC89 (talk) 23:50, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
- just to double check, would you be okay with every page in the tree of "Translations:Wikimedia Product/*/*" getting a redirect from "Translations/Wikimedia Audiences/*/*"? Otherwise I would need to filter the list and I'm not sure what you do or don't want. Either way, there are 1206 pages that would be linked to - see User:DannyS712/sandbox DannyS712 (talk) 23:51, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
- Triple redirects. See https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Special:PrefixIndex&prefix=Wikimedia_Audiences/2018_Product_points_of_view/

Namespace translation
Should namespaces or pagenames in general be translated? As you would still find the right page in most cases, but won't directly get redirected to it when typing the name in the search bar. Tobi 406 (talk) 11:53, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
- Anyone? Tobi 406 (talk) 12:37, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
- I think namespaces should be untranslated. See User talk:Shirayuki/2019#h-Using_Template:ll-2019-04-27T09:00:00.000Z. Shirayuki (talk) 21:23, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

Some design changes of Documentation template
So everyone gets rid of the icons and colors of the old sample, I slightly changed the design of the Documentation template by analogy with the template from the Russian Wikipedia. Which changes:
- Cleaner HTML. Separate blocks and classes for header, content and footer blocks.
- All styles are transferred to CSS - Module:Documentation/sandbox/styles.css.
- Color changed from green to common blue.
- Footer is no longer built on Fmbox.
- Added some fixes from English Wikipedia.
- Replaced documentation icon for icon from OOUI set.
- Replaced sandbox icon for more cleaner.
- Add translation table Module:Documentation/sandbox/i18n, it depends on local wiki language, for now.
Please, check it here - Template:Documentation/sandbox :) I want to hear your opinion. Iniquity (talk) 19:46, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Old categories for MediaWiki hooks by file
RESOLVED | |
Copying over to Project:Village Pump/Flow/2019/03#h-broken_links_on_hooks_pages-2019-03-07T12:34:00.000Z |

What should be done with categories for MediaWiki hooks by file and then later turn empty, when the file no longer exists and/or all the hooks were moved somewhere else?
For example:
Import hooks have been updated on-wiki to be under Category:MediaWiki hooks included in WikiImporter.php (includes/importer/WikiImporter.php
). They used to be in includes/Import.php
(until 1.27), but they've been updated on-wiki to reflect the reality of MediaWiki's current code. Now with the recent edits on the hook pages,Category:MediaWiki_hooks_included_in_Import.php is empty (and of course doesn't exist in current code).
Should these categories like this one be redirected to the new category? Should they be deleted? I'm interested in what others think. SamanthaNguyen (talk) 02:29, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
- Can we keep this in this thread on the page rather than have two about the same issue? :-) Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 02:46, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
- Hmm, they're related (file path for hooks) but not the same issue are they? I consider this to be different since that topic was about the source parameter being broken in Template:MediaWikiHook, since the link didn't originally work. This topic is just about the category itself. SamanthaNguyen (talk) 02:51, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
- For example, https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Manual:Hooks/BlockIpComplete&oldid=3127585, you can click and the link won't work because it doesn't include the full path, but it works as of the edit by Krinkle made in https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Manual:Hooks/BlockIpComplete&oldid=3128393.
- I'm talking about when hooks get updated because the hook's actual source was moved, (from includes/Import.php to includes/Import/WikiImporter.php, while the actual category name just reflects the file name). SamanthaNguyen (talk) 02:54, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's the same root issue though (different pointers for different versions of MediaWiki)? I don't have an opinion for either thread, but the solution for one should inform that for the other, presumably? Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 19:17, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
- That's fair, I'll close this and copy it over. SamanthaNguyen (talk) 21:01, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
