Description
English: Earth's Gravity according to the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM). The acceleration has its maximum at 0.5463 Earth radii (~ 3481 km, i.e. 2890 km below the surface) and a value of 10.66 m/s².

The green curves show:

  1. (dashed) an idealized Earth with constant density (naturally, Earth's average density was used for this).
  2. (stippled) an approximated Earth, where the density decreases linearly from center to surface. In this model, the density at the center is the same as in the PREM, but the surface density is chosen in such a way that the mass of the resulting sphere equals the mass of the Earth.
Deutsch: Das Gravitationsfeld der Erde nach dem Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM, „Vorläufiges Referenzmodell der Erde“). Die Fallbeschleunigung hat ihr Maximum bei 0,5463 Erdradien (≈ 3481 km, d.h. 2890 km unterhalb der Oberfläche) und einem Wert von 10,66 m/s².

Die grünen Kurven zeigen:

  1. (gestrichelt) eine vollkommen idealisierte Erde mit konstanter Dichte (selbstverständlich wurde hiefür die mittlere Dichte der Erde gewählt).
  2. (gepunktet) eine halbidealisierte Erde, bei der die Dichte vom Mittelpunkt zur Oberfläche linear abnimmt. Bei diesem Modell ist die Höchstdichte im Zentrum die gleiche wie im PREM, jedoch wurde der Wert für die Dichte an der Oberfläche so gewählt, dass die Masse der aus dieser Dichteverteilung resultierenden Kugel der Erdmasse entspricht.
