File:1850- Warming stripes - global average surface temperature.svg

Summary

Description
English: w:Warming stripes graphic showing global average surface temperature starting in 1850
  • It is envisioned that this graphic may be updated annually.
  • Version 3: updated to include data for 2025. Archive of Berkeley Earth monthly data downloaded from Met Office (UK) page (scroll down to "Get the data"; .csv file provides annual values)
  • Version 2: updated to include data for 2024, and a value of 0.125 °C per colour to accommodate wider range of temperatures encountered
  • Technical note: most SVG code was automatically generated by the "Warming stripess" spreadsheet linked at User:RCraig09/Excel to XML for SVG.
  • Colors are sixteen original ColorBrewer colors chosen by w:Warming stripes inventor, w:Ed Hawkins (climatologist)
  • The temperature range covered by each color was chosen in Version 1 as 0.12 °C per colour, in order to use use all sixteen colors without clipping.
  • The "border" temperature between red and blue stripes was chosen as the average of the highest and lowest temperature values (not as an average of a date range as is often found in Dr. Hawkins' w:Warming stripes).
  • Data for Version 1 is through 2023, updated over the data shown in some of the 2019 Related File linked below.
  • Data source: Berkeley Earth data linked at UK Met Office website: https://climate.metoffice.cloud/temperature.html (scroll down to Berkeley Earth under Global Mean Temperature)
Archive thereof (2024): https://web.archive.org/web/20240117053030/https://climate.metoffice.cloud/temperature.html
