Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Religion in Hungary by city

Hi! Please stop to create unwanted 'Religion in all small Hungarian city' (less then 100,000 people) special if there is only 1 subcat. Thank you! - - Globetrotter19 (talk) 16:23, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Cemeteries and religion

Are you sure that cemeteries should be assigned to the "religion" category? Cemeteries are a cultural phenomenon, not a religious one. After all, people who have nothing to do with religion will also be buried in cemeteries. Grzexs (talk) 10:06, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Saint James, the Apostle church in Świerże Górne. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Jmabel ! talk 04:01, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

A category without a super category

Здравствуйте. Просьба при создании категории <Религия в городе> обязательно указывать в качестве надкатегории сам город, если не существует категории <Культура в городе>. Online translation: Hello. About Jaroslaw categories

Hi Bonhooczys, I saw https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Statue_of_Virgin_Mary_in_Jaros%C5%82aw, I was wondering the reasoning behind it. Is a small religious figurine in the corner of a house (example) notable enough to have a dedicated category? Is it even correct to call it "Statue"? Ivanbranco (talk) 00:16, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

Superflouos categories

Please do not create categories like Category:Religion in Argir, which will only ever have 1 subcategory. Please also note that Argir is a suburb of Tórshavn, not a city. Hjart (talk) 12:17, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

Blanked categories

Hi, Bonhoczys. How are you doing? I see you blanked a bunch of categories with incorrect names instead of properly requesting their deletion. I solved the issue myself. However, if that ever happens to you again, you should use either {{Bad name}} or {{Speedy delete}} to request the deletion. Kind regards, Alavense (talk) 09:41, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
