Can't find the proper copyright tag
I've uploaded a few images which fall under [[Public Domain Mark 1.0 (= no copyright) but I can't find the right wiki-commons tag. Thank you DoritG (talk) 09:48, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

- @Luwanglinux: Hi, and welcome. From what second in the video did you take the screenshot? Is that section from one of the subject's posts on her Instagram? If so, which one? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 05:55, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: its definitely a screenshot from the video at 720p of "1:30" seconds of the youtube link I mentioned Luwanglinux (talk) 17:17, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- This should have been posted at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, not here on its talk page. It concerns File:SUSHMITA.jpg, which is a still from a YouTube video. The YouTube video is licensed 'Creative Commons Attribution licence (reuse allowed)', which is acceptable only if the YouTube uploader owns the copyright to this section of the video. There are reasons to doubt this ownership. The video appears to be a selection of clips from other sources: the video title includes "best likee videos || likee manipur || manipur likee videos", and there are TikTok watermarks at 1:09 and 6:39. The YouTube account does not appear to belong to a major media organisation. There is significant doubt that the YouTube license is valid so I will nominate this for deletion. Table of contents
Did something happen to the Table of Contents on the main VPC page? Was it disabled for some reason? Perhaps accidentally removed? If it's gone for good, then link to it in the page's header is not really needed any longer. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:56, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Bad edit
User:Jmabel thank you for undoing , whatever it was. I thought I was fixing a one letter html typo, in an archived page , and did not notice that it was actually older version of this page. Thanks for quick fix. Jarekt (talk) 00:59, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
Participation here
Unless I am mistaken, lately on this page there has been a lot less weighing in from the real experts than usual. I started commenting here just to try to get people responses on the relatively straightforward cases, but I'm at best a moderately knowledgeable layperson. I'm honestly a little worried that in only a couple of cases has anyone told me I got something wrong; I suspect I have made more errors than that. Please check my work, and also please if you know what you are doing respond to some of the people whose questions are going completely unanswered. - Jmabel ! talk 14:54, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

I reuploaded the images, this time in .jpg format. Is it acceptable or is it still invalid ? Leptitgay (talk) 01:45, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- The problem is NOT the file format, but the content. You CANNOT grab images from games or out of the net and upload them here, that's forbidden by laws all around the world. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 01:48, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- Should I remove the one for the Tales of Breaker page too ? Can I just upload the logo ? Leptitgay (talk) 01:49, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- Better not. While the writing may be OK, the graphical elements behind the words are too complex and copyright protected, so the complete logo is also not fir for Commons. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 01:56, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. I will refraint from uploading files from now on. Is there any way for my uploads to be deleted from Commons ? Leptitgay (talk) 02:00, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, it's me again. I wanted to ask about the logos and gameplay images, why am I unable to use them when other pages, like Xenosaga Pied Piper include both the logo and gameplay screenshots, which are almost certainly copyrighted as well seeing as it is from the same company. The same goes for Tales of Luminaria, its page clearly displays the logo too. And finally, I've seen those pictures being used on Youtube's automatic generated system without any issues, so I assume they are safe otherwise the parent company would've forced WikiPedia to take change the articles, and YouTube to fix their automatic system. Leptitgay (talk) 12:55, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Leptitgay: If you are talking about a page somewhere would you please link it? I'm guessing you are referring to en:Xenosaga: Pied Piper, but I shouldn't have to guess.
- Neither image on page en:Xenosaga: Pied Piper comes from Commons. This is an issue entirely on en-wiki, which uses them on the basis explained at Wikipedia:Non-free content. Commons does not accept non-free content. - Jmabel ! talk 18:35, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- I thought Commons and en-wiki were connected. So can I use images on Wikipedia EN and I clearly acknowledging that I do not intend to profit of them ? All the whilel giving credits to the owner and sourcing correctly ? Leptitgay (talk) 18:40, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Leptitgay, about "I thought Commons and en-wiki were connected" - well, that's true but also not. It is true that both sites are operated by the same organisation, the Wikimedia foundation. It is also true that Commons' possibly largest role (by "volume", "usage", I hope you get what I mean) is to serve a media repository for any and all Wikipedia editions around (but that's not the sole or exclusive purpose). But both sites are independently governed by their respective communities, so things that are either allowed or forbidden on EN-WP, for instance, may be disallowed or totally fine here. EN-WP makes use of the US copyright law provision of Fair use, whereas Commons does not. But Commons is way more liberal than EN-WP concerning paid edits, for instance.
- Commons is more strict about observing copyrights than other sites with user-generated content. Please take a look at COM:Precautionary principle and COM:CARES. What other companies like Alphabet Inc. (-> Google, Youtube) do is not relevant for Commons. They could very well have licensing agreements with publishers that we do not know of. Only that fact that a possibly copyright violating media is found somewhere else cannot be held as justification to host the same dataset here. If you find yourself having some interest in delving deeper into these matters, here are some links for further reading: COM:Licensing, COM:HIRTLE, COM:FOP, COM:De minimis, COM:TOO, COM:CRT and COM:CSM; I recommend looking up technical terms found there on Wikipedia. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 19:43, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- Also probably Commons:Uploading works by a third party, which doesn't go as deep as some of those, but is more of a tutorial overview and a how-to. - Jmabel ! talk 00:55, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
