Hindeloopen is ontstaan als een kleine nederzetting, maar groeide vrij snel tot een niet onbelangrijke plaats. In de 12e eeuw werd de plaats in een kopie van een document uit 822 vermeld als Hitinkufe en Hintinlvofe. In dezelfde eeuw werd op een kopie van een document van 825 vermeld als Hindahlop.
Hindeloopen kreeg in 1225 stadsrechten en is een van de Friese elf steden.
