Detailed description

e8 graph of the Gosset 421 polytope as a 2-dimensional skew orthogonal projection inside Petrie polygon. It is an emulation of the hand drawn original by Peter McMullen.

This is the (Petrie) projection in 2-dimensions consisting of the 6720 edges of 8-dimensional length sqrt(2).

The 8 concentric rings of 30 vertices are colored using the same color palette used to color the edges, which uses an algorithm that assigns colors based on the norm of the projected edge. The vertex ring colors (from smallest to largest) are: 1=Yellow,2=Gray,3=Orange,4=Cyan,5=Magenta,6=Red,7=Green,8=Blue.

The pattern is based on 2 golden ratio scaled sets of 4 rings of 30 600-cell vertices in Van Oss projection (i.e. H4 rings 1(Y),3(O),4(C),5(M) and H4 rings 2(Gray),6(R),7(G),8(B)). Each ring of 30 contains 2 on-XY-axis 16-cell (+/-) vertices and 4 off-XY-axis 8-cell (+/-) vertices in 4 rings making up the 24-cell. This is combined with 4 24-cell rotations of π/5 making up the snub 24-cell of 96 vertices.

For an overview of how the H4 related polytopes (8, 16, 24, snub-24, and 600-cells) embed into the E8 Petrie projection, see this post.
