The chapter-house andcloisters stood on the south side of the Cathedral, but weredestroyed during the civil wars. Part of the dormitory is yetremaining. The refectory is now used as the chapter-house. Itis not known when, or by whom, these buildings were erected.Though this church has been despoiled of its fair proportionsby the misapplied zeal of the puritans, it is still an imposingand interesting object on every approach to Carlisle, especiallyfrom the north-east, where it is seen crowning the whole city,rising far above the highest buildings which surround it, backed bya graceful line of hilly country; while the fore-ground of thepicture consists of rich meadow and river scenery, rendered stillmore picturesque by two handsome stone bridges of many arches.
