Summary

Description
Deutsch: Dach des Sydney Opera House, Sydney, New South Wales, Australien
English: Roof of the Sydney Opera House, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
The Sydney Opera House is one of the world’s most iconic buildings and represents a unique combination of architecture, culture, and exhibition art. After initial ideas for a large opera and concert hall in Sydney were put forward in 1947, Danish architect Jørn Utzon won the international competition in 1956 with an avant-garde design whose striking sail-like shell structure accentuates Bennelong Bay. Construction was significantly delayed, causing cost overruns and political disputes. From 1959 to 1973, under a succession of planners and engineers, shell-shaped roof structures were built, which later served as railing systems and spectator areas.
The opening in 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II marked the beginning of a global success story as a music, opera, and festival venue. In 2007, the ensemble became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered a masterpiece of modern architecture, and dominates Sydney’s skyline as a symbol of cultural innovation and creative power.

Australia

This reproduction is permitted under the Australian Copyright Act, sections 65–68, which state (emphasis added):
  • (65) (1) This section applies to sculptures and to works of artistic craftsmanship of the kind referred to in paragraph (c) of the definition of artistic work in section 10. (2) The copyright in a work to which this section applies that is situated, otherwise than temporarily, in a public place, or in premises open to the public, is not infringed by the making of a painting, drawing, engraving or photograph of the work or by the inclusion of the work in a cinematograph film or in a television broadcast.

Notes

For users of the photo

This image is not in the public domain. Copyright protection applies.

The rules of the listed free license apply, no more and no less. Please respect the copyright protection.

Particular attention should be paid to the terms of use, especially when using social media. These sometimes do not correspond to the license conditions listed here. (See CC BY-SA licenses and social media.) Please check this before use in the respective medium.

The license conditions must also be respected when using so-called generative artificial intelligence (AI). Images created on the basis of this image are processed images or derivatives within the meaning of the license.

Of course, a free license is no carte blanche for use. In particular, there are restrictions not based on the license, for example to the personality rights of the author (Copyright law of Germany, §§ 12 to 14 of the German Copyright Act). This is especially true for the required attribution and the use of the image. It is expressly not allowed to give the impression through the use of the image, that the author supports the work, in which the image is used, or whose rights holders in any way.

For editors

Please do not change the image file, the license, or the filename!

Even though a wiki offers a wide range of possibilities, some changes are possible but not permitted. The creator of the image has made it available here under the specific license mentioned. The three components — image file, license, and filename (title) — are inextricably linked. Always keep in mind that images are also used outside the Wikimedia Commons ecosystem. In those contexts, attribution specifically refers to this exact location and this exact image file here.

  • If you make changes to the image and want to make the modified image available to others here, upload the result under a new name and credit yourself as the editor — even for very minor changes. The templates Derivative and Extract are also available for this purpose. In addition, the author would like to make only minor corrections to the source he has on hand. The source is — as a rule — a RAW file. Editing a JPEG file always results in an undesirable loss of quality.
  • As an alternative to the specified license, only compatible licenses are permitted. Otherwise, any other form of licensing is reserved exclusively for the copyright holder.
  • When making changes to the filename, please always keep in mind the world outside of Wikimedia Commons. Anyone who enters a link expects the correct page with the correct image to appear. Anything else leads to confusion. A reference to the file versions is considered insufficient and impractical.

If you believe changes are necessary, or if you would like to offer constructive criticism, please contact the author.

It goes without saying that using the Crop Tool will not overwrite this original file. In accordance with the license, the resulting cropped image will have its user categories removed, any labels like “Quality Image” removed, the name of the person who created the cropped image added, and this original file cited as the source.

Two additional notes:

  • File metadata (EXIF/IPTC/XMP) may not be removed or altered, provided that it is useful and necessary for the enforcement of rights. (protection of information necessary for the enforcement of rights, §95c UrhG).
  • The author expressly disavows any images based on his photos (derivative works) that have been altered — even minimally — by third parties and on which only his name is listed as the author.

The title (or, alternatively, the filename) is part of the license’s required information and should therefore not be changed. If any of the information is incorrect, the author would appreciate being notified.
