Title
Spherical Medieval 14th century (Spencer 1998: 209) lead alloy pilgrim rattle containing fragments of shell.
Description
English: Spherical Medieval c. AD14th century (Spencer 1998: 209) lead alloy pilgrim rattle containing fragments of shell. The rattle now heavily distorted would have been a handheld sphere as there is no evident sign of a handle. It contains the broken remains of cockle shells, a symbol of pilgrimage. Dark grey in colour it is made up of an open latticework of triangular sectioned frames. There is a central boss to each hemisphere from which small spokes radiate to a ring from which more spokes radiate to a second ring forming triangles. This second ring is then connected via a zig-zagging framework to the equatorial rings which appear to be mostly butted together with occassionally soldered sections holding the hemispheres shut. Each of the rings is decorated with beading and the central bosses have ring and dot decoration and radiating spoke lines from the center. There is some concretion around the equatorial ring relating to its deposition environment.

Diameter: 50.24mm, Width: 23.77mm, Weight: 42.72g

These rattles are quite common in London and further information can be found in Spencer. B. 1998 Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges London:The Stationery Office
