Description |
English: The first residents of Seattle's South Park neighborhood, on the west bank of the Duwamish River, were Native Americans of the Duwamish tribe. Beginning in 1851, white settlers like Eli Maple (or Mapel) (1831-1911) staked claims to the land, however the area was mostly utilized by farmers. In 1889, I. William Adams purchased the Donovan farm and he platted the town of South Park. Shortly thereafter the Grant Street Electric Railway extended a trolley line from Seattle to South Park, crossing the Duwamish River over a wooden drawbridge. The town of South Park was annexed by Seattle on May 3, 1907. This announcement advertises the sale of home sites in the "suburb" of South Park by the South Park Land and Improvement Company, of which I. William Adams was president.
