Summary
Description | Ephesus was founded in the 900s BC by the Attican and Ionian Greeks on the former site of the Arzawan capital of Apasa. The city thrived in Antiquity, growing into a major seaport and the principal city of Anatolia, until it was surpassed in population and significance by Constantinople during the Roman period (129 BC-395 AD). The city started to face problems in the Byzantine period, when the harbor began to silt up and it faced repeated invasions, eventually leading to the depopulation of the city, which was a small village by the end of the Byzantine period, which was abandoned in the 1400s. The ruins languished near the modern-day town of Selcuk until the 19th Century, when they began to be excavated, and in the 20th Century, the ruins of the city became a major draw for tourists in the region. The ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. |
