Description
English: A depiction of a skirted statue discovered in 1714 in the Southbroom Hoard near Devizes, Wiltshire, from the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of "Hamp Shire" (Hampshire), the eighth in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales... The figure was placed on the map of a different county for want of room. Moll copied the figure's appearance and lack of identification from Musgrave's 1719 account of the hoard.

This copper alloy statue is now held by the British Museum (1811,0309.4). Musgrave identified it as Figure 13 (M13) while Durham categorized it as #344. Musgrave was at a loss to identify it, but scholars now consider it to represent Vulcan, Hephaestus, or a Gallo-Roman equivalent via Interpretatio Graeca or Romana, with similiar figures making a fairly common appearance in surviving statuary of gods from the era. The pileus hat is a typical attribute and the pose is standard, although the hammer or other attributes are missing from the hands. In common with the other male statues at the site, the figure has a molded chin beard. The British Museum website, however, offers that it may possible represent Mars or a local equivalent.

Notes: These Houshold Gods in number 19 with a Medal of Alexander Severus were found at the Devizes An. 1714 and are supposed to have been bury'd there in 234. the Rest for want of Room are placed in Dorset and Hampshires yat are barren of Antiquities; we being unwilling to omit such great Curiosities.

London: Sold by H. Moll over-against Devereux-Court in the Strand; Tho. Bowles, Print and Map-Seller near the Chapter-House in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and J. Bowles Print and Map-Seller over-against Stocks-Market. 1724.

Public domain
This work is in the public domain in France for one of the following reasons:
  • Its author (or the last of its authors in the case of a collaboration work) died more than 70 years ago (CPI art. L123-1) and did not benefit from any copyright extension (CPI art. L123-8, L123-9 and L123-10)[1];
  • It is an anonymous or pseudonymous work (the identity of the author has never been disclosed) or a collective work[2] and more than 70 years have passed since its publication (CPI art. L123-3);
  • It is the recording of an audiovisual or musical work already in the public domain, and more than 50 years have passed since the performance or the recording (CPI art. L211-4).

Please note that moral rights still apply when the work is in the public domain. They encompass, among others, the right to the respect of the author's name, quality and work (CPI art. L121-1). Attribution therefore remains mandatory.
  1. Copyright extensions must be considered only in the case of musical works and of authors Mort pour la France (died during conflict, in the service of France). In other cases, they are included in the 70 years post mortem auctoris length (see this statement of the Cour de Cassation).
  2. The collective work status is quite restrictive, please make sure that it is actually established.
