Summary
Description |
English: Species of the genus are nocturnal and emerge from their shells at night to feed on the biofilm layer that covers rocky substrates. They are sensitive to sunlight and strong wave action, and therefore seek out crevices and the underside of rocks where they take refuge. The presence of octopuses as predators has been recorded.
Species of the genus, as they grow, reabsorb the posterior portions of their shell, enlarging the interior chamber from within to accommodate their relatively large visceral mass. This process also allows the snail to maintain a reserve of water within the shell, a key adaptation that facilitates evaporative cooling and prevents desiccation with exposure above the tide line. Two species identified are: Nerita tessellata and Nerita versicolor. |
