Summary
Description |
English: This photograph is labelled 'Kohuratahi territorials' on the reverse, with no date. Kohuratahi is a now vanished town in Taranaki, near Whangamōmona. One suggested reason for its demise is the large number of local men killed in World War One. The men in the picture are wearing the famous ‘lemon squeezer’ hat, introduced by a New Zealand soldier who fought at Gallipoli, William George Malone. The hat echoed the outline of Mount Taranaki, and was adopted by Malone's Taranaki Rifles Regiment and his Wellington Regiment before being taken up by the rest of the NZ Infantry Division on 1st January 1916. |
