Notes
  • Significance: When carpenter Edward Harlin (the owner) died in 1820, the site was occupied by a 1 1/2 story frame house. It seems to have been succeeded by the present brick house in the following year. Title then went to George Smith, a leading Philadelphia typefounder, landlord to the George family. Here Henry George (author of progress and poverty, father of the single tax movement and political activist) was born in 1839. From 1838-1926 when the house was owned by S. K. Morton, the mansard roof, bay window and other drastic changes were added to its front...
