Description

Another 'random' group of men photographed by Poole - this time in the De La Salle College grounds it would seem! Tug O' War was a popular sport back in the early years of the last century, and contests seen as trials of strength between towns, villages, parishes and counties. This hardy looking group have their sleeves rolled up for action, and the esteemed Brother seems very proud of their achievements!

[/photos/gnmcauley/ Niall McAuley] points out that some of these achievements are listed on a blackboard front-centre. And include victories over Faithlegg, Knockboy, CYMS (presumably Catholic Young Men’s Society), and the Graves' Team (whoever they may have been) :) The rolled-up sleeves are pretty distinctive, as is the collar worn by the Brother - confirming that he was (if not already clear from context) a member of the De La Salle congregation...
