How do you take a photo like this?
To give you a little insight into how a photo like this was created, here are a few basic tips and tricks specifically related to this photo.
Basics

First, you should be aware that a good photo is taken by the photographer themselves. The focus is therefore on composition and creativity. At least when you are starting out, it is advisable to follow the rules of composition. The camera and lens are tools for creating the photo. Technically speaking, a photo is only as good as the tools allow it to be.

If creativity and high quality are important to you, you should say goodbye to fully automatic mode. However, individual automatic functions can be useful. It is better to make some camera settings consciously, so it is also important to use them selectively.

There are only a few basic parameters that affect a photo. These are aperture, exposure time and ISO value. The aperture determines the depth of field in the image. The wider the aperture is open, the less sharp the image will be, and vice versa. However, the aperture should only be closed as far as is absolutely necessary. The exposure time should be short enough to prevent the photo from being blurred. The shorter it is, the more likely it is that movement will be frozen. The ISO value determines how sensitive a sensor is to light. The higher it is, the more sensitive it becomes. (More precisely, the light signal is amplified.) However, this has a disadvantage, because as the ISO value increases, so does the noise.

You should be able to focus correctly on the camera. You don’t necessarily have to focus manually, but you should be able to select the appropriate focus fields yourself. Furthermore, the significance of the focal length and its effect on the photo should be actively selected. For example, a longer focal length results in a compression effect, which has its own image effect. Even when using a zoom lens, it can’t hurt to take a few steps forward or backward.

Of course, this is only a very brief overview. There are other influencing factors and parameters, but these cannot be conveyed in the brevity of this text.
Tips & Tricks
Black-and-white photography (more accurately, but less commonly referred to as monochrome or grayscale photography) emphasizes structures. In many cases, color would be more distracting. With the help of color controls, you can influence the conversion to grayscale and thus give the photo a different expression. In the early days of photography, black and white was often used for documentation, but also as a form of artistic expression. Since around the 1990s, black and white photography has been used more and more as a form of creative photography, after fading into the background in the 1970s. Some consider black-and-white photography to be the supreme discipline of photographic art.

The rule of thirds is one of the basic compositional rules in photography, whereby the image is divided into thirds. The image is divided horizontally and/or vertically into three parts of equal width or height. Important elements such as the horizon are placed along these imaginary lines. The rule is supported by many cameras, as a corresponding grid can be displayed on the screen.

Nothing in the background should distract from the main subject. The viewer’s gaze should automatically fall on your subject and not on distracting details behind it. If your gaze “wanders” around the photo, the background is probably too busy. When taking the photo, move slightly to the left or right. Often, distracting elements will disappear immediately. Or open the aperture slightly to blur the background. Or change the perspective by moving lower or higher.

Smartphones are less suitable for high-quality photos, as they reach their limits in areas such as animal photography, sports, studio work, and night photography, where dedicated cameras are irreplaceable. Here, a good lens and a sufficiently large sensor are essential. Smartphones are not ideal for larger prints in particular. However, with a few settings (high resolution, RAW file format), it is still possible to take photos that are good enough for general use in many situations.

Minimalist photography reduces the image to its essentials: clear forms, limited color, and ample white space. Its core principle is "less is more"—deliberate reduction creates tranquility, clarity, and emotional impact. Typical are large areas of uniform color, such as sky, water, or walls, which emphasize a central motif, like a person, an object, or a line. Geometric structures, symmetry, and the interplay of light and shadow enhance the effect. The composition often follows the rule of thirds or relies on centering to create balance. Instead of telling complex stories, this type of photography conveys moods such as stillness, solitude, or serenity. It is created in places with few distractions — on empty beaches, in simple interiors, or in foggy weather. A keen eye for detail and the discipline to exclude everything unnecessary from the viewfinder are crucial. Post-processing is deliberately subtle to avoid disrupting the original effect. Minimalist photography invites contemplation — both during the photography process and the viewing experience. It shows that simplicity can deeply touch the heart when it arises from mindfulness.

The light in the morning tells different stories than the light in the evening. Shadows paint patterns on walls. Raindrops transform into tiny universes when viewed in macro. An ordinary street becomes a stage when you observe it patiently.

You don’t need the most expensive equipment. You need your eye. Ask yourself:

  • What do I overlook every day?
  • How does this moment feel?
  • What happens when I get closer — or further away?

Allow yourself to experiment. Play with perspectives. Crouch down. Take pictures against the light. Deliberately crop something out. Break the rules — after you know them. Not every picture has to be perfect. Every picture can be a step.

Creativity comes from doing. So get going. Capture what moves you. Show your view of the world — because no one else sees it the way you do.

Your camera is not a tool for perfection.
It is a tool for expression.
