Summary

Description
English:
A basket of Twin Babies, Old Calabar, late 19th century
Image of a woven basket containing two sets of twin babies. There are two older children standing behind the basket and two seated in the foreground of the picture.; It was the belief in Calabar that if a woman had twins one of them had to be a devil so the twins were left in the jungle to die. Mary Slessor, the Scottish Missionary, successfully fought against the practice of killing twins at infancy and herself saved many twins from this fate.
