De pelikanen spreiden beschermend hun vleugels uit over hun jongen, net zoals de leiders van het weeshuis,waar deze steen de ingang siert, dat behoorden te doen. In de middeleeuwen is het beeld ontstaan van de pelikaan als voorbeeld van zorg, daar deze niet zou schuwen diens eigen kinderen met zijn bloed te voeden. Nu is het niet meer zo bekend, maar eeuwenlang was de symboliek van de offervaardige vogel net zo vanzelfsprekend als die van de vredesduif. Bron: Eric Hennekam (www.archieven.org) |
