It has been proposed to move Category:Animal sex to Category:Animals mating

Reason: "Animal sex" is ambiguous three ways—sex (copulation/spawning) v sex (sexual play) v sex (biological reproductive type)—and potentially misleading: species that engage in sexual activity, for reasons other than reproduction, are the exception; and there are various mating mechanisms that do not by any stretch of imagination resonate with the word 'sex'. A clear and concise name is available, there should be no reason to retain this one, other than it's a bother to rename all subcategories using the same name structure.

Now, "mating" in biology technically *does* include pretty much any behaviour that's related to reproduction (like pair formation, nesting, parental care), **but** with established separate categories already existing for those aspects, and the higher level concept of "reproduction" already being known as "reproduction", "mating" should remain a clear and intuitive term to specifically mean behaviours that directly result in gamete transfer and fertilization, and the obvious superior name for these categories. --Pitke (talk) 15:19, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
