As the images are to have a free license, the fonts we use should also be free. Seeing how regional variations have varying glyphs, different fonts must be used for each variant. For consistency in the images, each variant should aim to use the same or similar fonts.

File names

The characters are uploaded under their character, suffixed with a standard name depending on the style and stroke order variant. The following table indicates the suffixes.

PRC characters: 汉鼎简楷体 (for Windows).
ROC characters: 教育部標準楷書 (see parent directory for other versions) from the R.O.C. Ministry of Education's National Languages Committee.
Font size
90px (roughly! see discussion) Note that different fonts will deliver different sizes with the same pixel size.
Colours
Completed character: Black (RGB 0,0,0 or #000).
Strokes: Dark gray (RGB 102,102,102 or #666).
Character background: Light gray (RGB 204,204,204 or #CCC).
The arrow: Pure red (R:255 V:00 B:00)
The dot: Pure green (R:00 V:255 B:00)

The brush (pinceau); opacity: ~50%; using mode: only brightened/only darkened and "Incremental".

Steps
  1. step: Open a vierge png file of 300px/300px
  2. step: Write in black a centred character (size: 300px, font: San GunguSue Medium)
  3. step: Count the strokes to know how many colours are needed.
  4. step: Copy the colours needed from File:Reds chart 16.svg to the character you plan to make.
  5. step: Select and fill in the colour for each stroke.
  6. step: Save your image on the PNG format.
  • Time needed for a 5 stroke character: about 15–20 minutes (for a very pretty job)

Those are the recommended and official guidelines to make the Stroke Order Project's animated images.

The recommended font is TW-MOE-Std-Kai Regular"(which is only for traditional characters), edukai-4.0.zip

Vector images and animations

Vector images and animations would be ideal, but hasn't gotten off the ground yet. This is in part due to the fact that, the W3C recommendation for the animation markup isn't agreed upon yet.
