- Firstly, you allow yourself to change the file description (indicating the supposed date of creation and source), without saying a word about your actions here, and some user, looking at the file, may decide that my nomination is false. Please refrain from such actions in the future. Secondly, you have indicated 5 sources for the uploader, but I still don't see a single proof of the publication date more than 70 years ago, date of the photographer's death or any other evidence of PD. Quick1984 (talk) 04:32, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- Re:First point. Sorry for that. I assumed that the closing admin would check the file history before closing or that my mentioning of those aspects here would make it clear that said info wasn't in the description when you nominated the file. I didn't intend and didn't realize that my edits to the file might make it look as if your DR was false. My apologies for that. Your DR was definitely valid and justified.
- Re:Second point. I added more source links (including archive links) because the one that was there was a dead link which had no archived version, so my actions were meant to address link rot. I also didn't find any indication of this photo having been published 70 years ago or who exactly the photographer is (otherwise I would have explicitly mentioned it in my comment), but I'm also not enough of a copyright expert to draw clear conclusions from my findings, that's why I just posted the facts that I've found as they are without making any suggestions as to whether the file should be kept or deleted based on those findings. What I'm saying is basically: here's information I could find and that wasn't there before, now do with this information whatever you want. If it helps to clarify the copyright status of the file — cool, if not — so be it. Nakonana (talk) 15:20, 9 June 2025 (UTC)

Likely copyright violations. According to sl:Uporabnik:Tamino Petelinšek/Vzorčna stran, the artworks are by Matej Soklič (1926–2005), not the uploader's own work. Similarly, the portrait is obviously a scanned picture from somewhere unknown, and not the uploader's work. There is no evidence of permission for any of those. — Yerpo Eh? 08:46, 7 April 2025 (UTC)

- To be clear the associated jpg I'm referring to is File:Noam Chomsky portrait 2017 retouched.jpg, not the un-cropped source image Σ (talk) 09:47, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- My only concern is making sure we don't break attribution by deleting the revision history. Σ the color correction in File:Noam Chomsky portrait 2017 retouched.jpg looks the same as the color correction done by Jonnmann on the PNG? Keep I think it does pass de minimis, as the only icon whose details aren't blurred is the Microsoft icon, and it's so small on the picture frame. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:51, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- I was unsure about that too-yeah, it's small, but the icons are still the secondary focus and only look blurred bcs the image quality is bad. DoctorWhoFan91 (talk) 13:20, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
- But obviously usable, QED. I don't think it makes sense to complain about the focus of copyrighted icons, when that's precisely what enables the image to be used. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:06, 13 April 2025 (UTC)

If you could delete the copied photos, please. Thank you.
As you can see we're dealing with a group of older amateurs who want to put their work online. I admit they’re a bit clumsy and not as familiar with technology as we are. Every day, I have to corect their layout, I've been doing this for 3 years now, and he really doesn't understand anything.
Let's be practical. First of all, a large part of the photos they've uploded belong to them. There are about 1500 photos, and for now, they're only on the Basque wiki.
Second, he doesn't seem to want to check all the photos because he knows that a large majority of them are theirs or their friends. As for credits, I seriously think they don't care about it, it's not an existential issue for them.
The solution would be to verify the photos with AI, or if you know Python, you could do it. I don't know anything about that. What I can do is give you the list of all their photos in URL format ("https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cc/Piperatus.jpg"), but that's the best I can do.
AI gaves me that: This Python script is designed to check information about images hosted on Wikimedia Commons, specifically looking at their description pages. It extracts details like the image's title and licensing information. The script works by fetching the Wikimedia Commons page for each image using its direct URL and then scraping the page for relevant details.
import requests from bs4 import BeautifulSoup # List of Wikimedia Commons image URLs image_urls = [ "https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cc/Piperatus.jpg", "https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ca/Joxe1.jpg", "https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4a/Zaldun_ziza.jpg" ] # Function to check information on the image's description page def check_image_info(image_url): file_name = image_url.split("/")[-1] commons_url = f"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:{file_name}" response = requests.get(commons_url) if response.status_code == 200: soup = BeautifulSoup(response.text, 'html.parser') title = soup.find('h1', {'id': 'firstHeading'}).text license_info = soup.find('div', {'class': 'license'}).text.strip() print(f"Image: {title}") print(f"License: {license_info}") else: print(f"Error retrieving the page for {image_url}") # Check all the images for url in image_urls: check_image_info(url)

- It is not clear to me what the issue is with the listing, why it should have been put forward for deletion. The publisher still exists, and the intention is for it to publish one or two further titles later this year. Could you please clarify the issue? At the time of creation a check was done to see if there was any conflict regarding the name. None was found, and I cannot think of any other potential copyright issues. The cover image is from an old, original photograph, thus a one-off, purchased from a seller in the US.

- The issue isn't whether the publisher exists or not. It's just that this type of plain text file doesn't fall within the purpose of Wikimedia Commons - see COM:SCOPE. If you wish to write an article about Anywhere Books, you can consider creating an article for it on the English Wikipedia if it meets their notability criteria. - Hi, I'm really not sure who took this image, which is why I didn't attach a U.S. Government tag. The only Commons tag that I thought I would apply would be the one in the WH's copyright policy. File:Homepage of Trump's White House website (January 2025).png uses possibly copyrighted images citing CC BY 3.0 U.S. but attached U.S. GOV tag. Make what you will of that. Rexophile (talk) 19:00, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- Another thing to notice is that the jpg is not a low quality version of the png and webp that I uploaded. They literally just took the low-res image and scaled it up; there is no quality difference. Rexophile (talk) 19:07, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Rexophile Thanks for your response and for posting the link to the copyright page.
- As far as the quality, generally, photographs start out as JPEGs and when they're converted to PNG or WEBP (not sure if you did "save as" with the browser or took a screenshot), you lose a lot of sharpness, so it's preferred that photographs are saved in their original JPEG format. Plus, JPEGs load faster on Wikipedia since the site automatically creates lower-res thumbnails, so it's a better user experience. Since the three files are essentially redundant, it makes sense to keep the JPEG over the PNG and WEBP. Adeletron 3030 (talk) 19:34, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- I did "Save as" and the original file listed was a WEBP. I think the JPEG and WEBP should be deleted and we can keep the PNG. Rexophile (talk) 19:46, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Rexophile The file at the whitehouse.gov link is a JPEG. It's possible that your browser automatically downloads as WEBP (mine does it so I had to go into the settings to make it stop). But why keep the PNG when it's lower resolution and it's a "flattened" version of the JPEG that performs worse on Wikipedia? Adeletron 3030 (talk) 20:14, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- I did "Save as" and the original file listed was a WEBP. I think the JPEG and WEBP should be deleted and we can keep the PNG. Rexophile (talk) 19:46, 7 April 2025 (UTC)

Incorrect {{PD-US-expired}} claim. More recent Mickey Mouse is still under copyright. See also:

Wcam (talk) 17:56, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
Keep: more recent is critical to the request - this Mickey Mouse is more closed to the 1928 version (the Steamboat Willie one, see File:Mickey-Mouse.png) which is public domain in 2025, and the wordmark is under TOO in the USA.
- The File:Walt disney logo mickey.svg was deleted because the logo was out of scope, not because the logo was under copyright. I can't see deleted images, but according to the Fandom article, the 2011 version is based on morden Mickey Mouse (See en:File:Modern Mickey Mouse.png), and that's why the community deleted File:Disney Junior logo 2011.svg. I believe File:Globo Gigante Mickey Mouse - A740158.jpg was based on morden Mickey Mouse as wll.
- I have asked the image's copyright questions on English Wikipedia, and @Ajpolino believe the logo is fine and undelete the logo, so I think I should ping them as well. Saimmx (talk) 05:05, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
Keep per above, it appears to be the 1928 version of Mickey Mouse. Tvpuppy (talk) 01:12, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
Question. Is this an actual 1928-1929 drawing of Mickey Mouse? Or is this a modern drawing in the style of 1928-1929 Mickey Mouse? IronGargoyle (talk) 18:42, 14 April 2025 (UTC)
- It strongly depends on the answer to IronGargoyle’s question. Even if an image depicts a public domain character, if the image isn’t public domain itself, then it is copyrighted. I can draw Mickey Mouse based off the 1928 version right now, but it will be copyrighted because it’s an original drawing from 2025. Star Manatee (talk) 14:59, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
- As a reminder, per COM:EVID, the burden of proof lies on the uploader or other person arguing for the file to be retained. Otherwise if we don't know the asnwer to this question, this image should be deleted per COM:PRP. Wcam (talk) 02:48, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Wcam I'd rather suggest deprecate or even nominate for deletion for PRP if you still cite so. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:32, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

- Hmm, well, yes, I haven't considered that the Mickey may be a COM:DW from a PD, not as clear as the intro. I guess it does meet COM:TOO as well. Might need some research. --Saimmx (talk) 13:25, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
Keep per Ajpolino. The Mickey Mouse design that someone nominated for deletion is actually the 1929 design that seen in The Opry House and The Karnival Kid, in which are the first shorts to feature Mickey's gloves and have a button in his pants, and both of the shorts already PD in the US since January this year (remember, those works are PD because it was released before January 1, 1930, hence 95 years prior to publication). Instead of nominating file for deletion, i suggest adding a warning for German-language Wikimedia projects (as well as other language-specific projects that retain its copyright for 1928 Mickey design) that emphasize this file cannot be used for their projects (in Germany, which does not apply "rule of shorter term" for US works, this design still under copyright protection because Ub Iwerks died in 1972, so i might be only PD in the country in 2042). Yayan550 (talk) 23:00, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
Keep Per above, especially Ajpolino despite still yet to input, this case is just a kindly DW of a PD work, no suggestions on other deleted cases above. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:33, 17 May 2025 (UTC)
Speedy keep Although this logo similar to this may above threshold of originality in the US, given that copyright of Mickey Mouse original design already expired here (for this year, 1929 Mickey shorts was in PD because it was published before 1 January 1930), that's okay for this logo to be placed in PD, and Mickey's design depicted at WDAS logo is a derivative work of the original Mickey design whose its copyright is already expired. But remember, this design is still copyrighted in some countries which use life of author+70 years and does not apply "rule of shorter term" for US works. So, i propose to include a warning similar to "Urheberrechtlich geschützt" similar to File:Mickey Mouse.svg that this logo with original Mickey Mouse design cannot be used for Wikipedia language projects that still maintain copyright for the original Mickey design such as German-language projects. 2404:8000:1037:587:456F:150F:468D:9493 03:48, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
Delete just because it's a derivative work of a PD character doesn't make that version automatically PD, unless that specific drawing of Mickey appeared on Steamboat Willie/whatever other PD Mickey Mouse cartoon? SergioFLS (talk) 20:21, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
Keep per most comments, unless someone can reasonably proof that this work was made outside the United States and its work had copyright term of life+70 years. In case of a work created in 1928, if the author or co-author died in 1972 and does not have "rule of shorter term" for foreign works, this work (in this case Steamboat Willie's design of Mickey) is still under copyright in some countries with life+70 years until 2041 at least. However, given that it was made in the US, rules of other countries does not apply here. 182.1.236.1 09:36, 28 May 2025 (UTC)

No indication of "express permission" by Government House; I presume they changed the copyright status on this image since it was uploaded. The link to the image is here, which says "Crown Copyright, Permission for re-use required" and the same copyright policy says:
- Copyright on these official portrait photographs is held by Government House, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. You must not reuse any official portrait photographic images without express permission from Government House.
Like I said, I'm guessing they updated the copyright on this from the 4.0 International to a more limited license. However long this file has been here, it is our duty to follow copyright law. Rexophile (talk) 22:25, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- Update: I sent Government House an inquiry. Rexophile (talk) 00:55, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
Info, at the time of upload in 2023, the copyright policy states, "
Unless indicated otherwise for specific items or collections of content...this copyright material is licensed for re-use under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence.
". For the collection of official portraits, at that time there is no indication (as mentioned above) that the portratis are exceptions to the CC-BY-4.0 license. The copyright policy was only updated recently (January 2025) to remove the blanket CC-BY-4.0 statement.- Clearly, this was an oversight by the website, so I guess the argument for deletion is whether the CC-BY-4.0 license was actually valid in the first place, since the EXIF data seems to suggest the copyright holder is someone else other than the Government House.

They would have contracts in place with their hired photographers that transfers copyright to the office. If at the time of uploading, the license was compatible with Commons' requirements, we must keep this file. It’s legally meaningless for them to change their mind later on.
