How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

Hello Geagea/Archive,

I noticed you've uploaded multiple images that differ only in size, and I thought I should draw your attention to a certain feature of our software. MediaWiki, the software which drives Commons and other projects like Wikipedia, is able to handle reducing the size of the images automatically. For example, even though File:Red Apple.jpg is a very large picture (2418 × 2192 pixel), MediaWiki can automatically generate thumbnails in all sizes (example: 50-pixel thumbnail).

You can include a resized thumbnail of any image in a Wikipedia article using [[File:Red Apple.jpg|thumb|Description here]]

For a narrower image – those in upright or portrait aspect ratio  – use [[File:Red Apple.jpg|thumb|upright|Description here]]

Thanks to this feature, you only need to upload the highest-resolution image you have available. That's why Warrior of Goori and warrior of Lesghia (A).jpg has been deleted, while your larger image will remain available for use and resizing. I also recommend reading the picture tutorial, you will find answer for nearly all your questions regarding use of images there. Thank you and happy uploading.

HeminKurdistan, we have a channel for the IDF where we can request the release of copyright. The IDF has appointed an high renk officer who is responsible for approving. Applications are submitted to this page. "Aug. 16, 1938, Socony employees' children" photo series

Hello,

Where do you suppose photos like this one were taken? I assume it might be in New York state (where Socony was based), but I've noticed you have many, if not all, of those photos in this gallery.

Shāntián Tàiláng, in general, the American Colony Photo Department (or Matson Photo Service) based in Jerusalem. The photos they have taken are from the middle east mostly. The Socony Vacuum Oil Company was active in Israel since 1917 Sonol, see also this Socony Vacuum gas station. So the photo likely taken in Israel. In my opinion the place is Jerusalem. But you did remove it, and restored the surperfluous categories of "german language maps" and "David Rumsey Collection" etc, which are included in the super-category. Also, not all of these files need to be included in each category they had before, several of them are overlapping. For example, "1860s maps of Palestine" already encompasses "1860s maps of Israel", which is a huge anachronism anyway as not even the Yishuv (the new one, under this name) was around in the 1860s, and 'Israel' was not part of the Ottoman administrative system. Unless a map before the 1940s specifically mentions Israel (e.g. Category:Maps of the Tribes of Israel, totally legit!), it is not an "old map of Israel", and in this case it is just a small cutout of a map of the Ottoman Empire. The whole Ottoman territory belonged to the Vilayets of Beirut and Jerusalem (or "Ottoman Syria"), and afterwards the Mandate of Palestine. Similarly, I also try to move maps into "Maps of the Caucasus" and "Maps of the Balkans" categories (from Azerbaijan and Kosovo, for example), because the distinctions of modern borders don't matter in the historical perspective of when the maps were drawn. The point is that the category structure in commons should be helping users using the structure for other projects. Israel is not part of Palestine. The region Palestine called also Israel. all the category structure should be usufull to the category History of Israel. This template - {{IsraelMapsDecade}} should be changed (AnRo0002). See also this discussion.

I'l try to explain in another way. this file is a map of Germany from 1680. So it is not Germany? does it Holy Roman Empire? Jordan was established in 1946. there wan not Jordan before so there no legitimacy to maps of Jordan by year?

The current boundaries of the countries today should be a matter of Category structure by year as a part of the history of the same countries.

I do know that we have (for example) 17th/18th/19th-century maps of Lithuania and Poland; even for times where these were not states, but merely subdivisions of larger empires. Yet, these remained territorial and ethnic identities, which is not the case in some other territories. I did make a huge effort once to delete the "7th-century maps of Saudi Arabia" (sic!!!) which I found just atrocious. The category tree now has "Category:17th-century maps of Arabia" (etc), until the Saudis were an established state in the 20th century and we actually have maps of that state. Strictly speaking, I am also against "17th century maps of Jordan/Lebanon/Iraq", and also against "Maps of Germany in the 5th century BCE" and against "2nd-century maps of Austria/Portugal/Croatia". The Franconian Circle map however depicts a German part of the HRE and is a 17th-century map, when Germany was a thing. If we had a subcategory for Franconia, it should still go there, and the category of Maps of Franconia can then be made part of the Maps of Germany. Why not. Similarly, I do think that instead of "17th century maps of Iraq" we should have a category for "17th century maps of the Vilayet of Basra/Mosul/Baghdad", which then get to be properly part of "Old maps of Iraq". However, the issue of moving all the submaps that depict these territories into proper categories of Syria/Arabia/Mesopotamia under the correct names of the Ottoman Vilayets, is very low on my ToDo list right now. I am mostly content with dissolving the stupid one-file map categories per year into the decade map categories, whenever I come across them.

The thing with Israel is that it had no borders before 1948, it was newly founded just like "Jordan" and "Saudi Arabia". The area that would become Israel had a geographical name though: "(Greek/Roman/Byzantine/Ottoman) Palestine", which may not be confused with the modern (non?-)state of Palestine after 1948. Hence, "1820s maps of Palestine" (showing contemporary Ottoman territories, not the biblical stuff) correctly describes even the territories that are today firmly controlled by Israel, while "1820s maps of Israel" is an avoidable anachronism and also a parallel structure where all files without exception need to be part of the Palestine category, too. So: superfluous. Furthermore, "1740 maps of Israel" has two problems at once: First, it only includes a single file, which means it should be dissolved into a broader category like "1740s maps". Second, that single file shows a detail cutout of the Ottoman Empire. No connection to either Israelite or Israelian history. Nor the Jordanian history. It barely qualifies as a "map of Palestine/Cyprus/Syria". It is also not a "Map of the Holy Land" (no religious context to be seen) and finally not a "Map of the Middle East" either (because it shows just the geographical Near East). Meanwhile, this 1690s map is a map of the Holy Land (terre promise, Kanaan, etc.) and actually not a map of 1690s Ottoman Palestine at all, if I'm not mistaken. Not sure if the Amalekites were still around ;-D. So this file belongs into "Old maps of the tribes of Israel", "1690s maps showing history" etc.

(Aaaaand I already fore-see the argument "1630s maps of the United States" - well, that idiocy was of course not my idea, but lacking a proper singular term for the whole later-to-be-US, I think it makes at least a bit of sense) --Enyavar (talk) 09:10, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Regarding removing valid categories

Hello Geagea,

In February you asked me why I removed valid categories for TIFF images from categories. Here is a better explanation. Those images were uploaded by Fæ for Category:Matson Collection in the Library of Congress. The instructions for that category say

Both tif and jpg format versions of the same scans are included in this category. When adding categories the jpg version is preferred for Wikimedia projects due to size and more accurate rendering of thumbnail versions. To create cropped versions or other derived images, the tifs are normally significantly higher resolution as a starting point. Any derived versions should be created as new jpgs linking back to the original.

Hello Geagea,

Israel did not come into existence as a sovereign state until May, 1948. Ben-Gurion became Prime Minister in 1949. After his death in 1979, the airport was named after him. How can land in the British Mandate of Palestine in the 1930s, part of the British Empire, be named Ben Gurion International Airport? What is your reasoning?
