Description

Fragment d'un ensemble de mosaïques provenant d’une villa romaine, un domaine agricole qui comprenait une partie résidentielle somptueuse. De ce domaine, on ne connaît que le plan de la salle qui avait reçu ce pavement, au IVe ou au Ve siècle. La salle, longue de 13 m et large de 3 m, était agrémentée de six absides. On pense qu’il s’agissait du vestiaire d’un complexe thermal : l’apodyterium. Toutes les créatures marines représentées appartiennent à l’univers du dieu Océan.

Le triton Nymphogénès souffle dans un long coquillage dont il ne reste que l’embout. Les tritons étaient les équivalents masculins des sirènes ; ils composaient le cortège escortant Neptune, le dieu de la mer.
