Firefighting and Rescue Trains in Portugal

Greetings, @Mdaniels5757. I have no ideia why the user wanted to change the category, but it was a wrong move - not all trains in the category are for firefighting. In fact, only one of the photographs depicts an firefighting train, all the others are standard rescue trains. Best regards and happy new year, -- Ajpvalente (talk) 16:09, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

@Ajpvalente OK, thanks for letting me know and fixing it. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 17:45, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

Regarding archiving by your Bot of COM:RFR

Hello @Mdaniels5757 hope you are doing well. This is regarding archiving of declined requests of Confirmed status at COM:RFR. For the concern, I would kindly request you to refer to User talk:Abzeronow#COM:RFR archiving. I first went there where Aafi suggested me to come to you since you are operator. I and Aafi made some changes to maintain consistency. Rest is your cup of tea. Thank you. Shaan SenguptaTalk 12:05, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

@Shaan Sengupta Thanks for reporting. Currently, the nice thing about how the bot works as-is is that all rights are the same: requests for confirmed are treated the same as requests for autopatrol. It would require some work to change that. But now the archives will show through 2028 once those subpages are created. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 15:42, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

AF

Hi @Mdaniels5757, not good on this side but would you be able to set a filter that stops this repetitive nonsense? Had this been a close IP range, I'd have issued a block but these are dynamic IPs bringing a bunch of terrible stuff every now and then, and protections don't appear to help. Regards, Aafi (talk) 13:24, 10 January 2025 (UTC)

@Aafi Sure, done. Also sent you an email. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 17:01, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
Thank you. Regards, Aafi (talk) 17:05, 10 January 2025 (UTC)

Signature Julia Boschman

Hello @Mdaniels5757, I was still in consultation with the person who had nominated this file for removal. It is unjustified that this file has been removed or its nomination, because I can explain/show that this file can simply be on Wikipedia Commons. Regards, Aaron371 (talk) 22:02, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

Hi @Aaron371. What would you say to "explain/show that this file can simply be on Wikipedia Commons"? —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 22:32, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
Firstly, I would say that the fact this file is a signature of an artist/singer, something Wikimedia Commons has for mány artists from around the world. Secondly, regarding copyright, the only person who has copyright on a signature is the person themselves. It is hér signature that is used on hér Wikipedia article. Just like her personal information, like every other singer who has it’s signature on the article. Whatever the singer chooses by itself to release it to the world. But the most important reason is that I see that the signatures of a few world stars have been released in exactly the same way as I did with this signature. And these are signatures that have been on Wikimedia Commons for many years and are therefore accepted. With one of those famous singers, the signature released here on Wikimedia is derived from the signature being placed on a card, which is also the case with this singer (Julia Boschman). And there are sources for that too. So why should the signature I released need an exception? What's the difference? I can give the names of my examples if you want, so you can see for yourself. Aaron371 (talk) 11:57, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
Hi @Aaron371. Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, although some signatures are not copyrighted, others are. Given the uncertainties around Dutch law around this point, and Commons' policy regarding what to do with uncertainty, I think the admin who closed Commons:Deletion requests/File:Handtekening Julia Boschman.png was fair in closing that discussion as delete. Re-uploading deleted content because you disagree with the outcome of the original deletion discussion is not allowed, and such images can be deleted speedily. If you disagree with that closure, you can make a request at the undeletion request page. Best, —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 17:20, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

Renaming of pronunciation files

Hi @Mdaniels5757,

Thanks for renaming the Tyap pronunciation files. We were eagerly awaiting these as a part of this project. You also changed the file extensions to .oga, and I understand how it can be an improvement to follow the recommendations of the Xiph.org foundation. Unfortunately, this also has a disadvantage: the sound files will still not get picked up by the pronunciation templates on Dutch Wiktionary, because as a legacy it presupposes an .ogg extension. For our template to work, using a single extension for pronunciation files is crucial. Larger projects like the English or French Wiktionaries probably have the manpower to manually assign pronunciation files to lemmas, but for us this is not a feasible option. Of course, we could switch to .oga, but then we would need to rename all existing .ogg files (over half a million for Dutch alone), probably breaking similar templates on other Wiktionaries. I would be very grateful if you would honor the original request to rename the files to an .ogg extension. MarcoSwart (talk) 07:52, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

@MarcoSwart Looking into this: I didn't change anything manually, so something changed ogg to oga somehow. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 16:46, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
@MarcoSwart It looks like this is automatic as part of our renaming script. Which template on the Dutch Wiktionary are you referring to? —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 17:00, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
The template audio, used on over 600 thousand pages. MarcoSwart (talk) 19:35, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
@MarcoSwart I see. Could you clarify how the template doesn't work with an .oga extension? It seems to work fine on wikt:nl:Holan (where it has the .oga extension). I compared to wikt:nl:combinatietang (which has an .ogg extension), but it seems to work the same. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 20:16, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
It works if you use the option to add the file name manually. But the point is that we heavily rely on using the preset value .ogg to derive the name of the sound file without manual intervention. At A̱tyudot the template doesn't find the sound file (because it's .oga instead of .ogg) and automatically encourages readers to upload one. Making the names of sound files less predictable, renders them in fact less usable for smaller projects: we simply lack the manpower to do all the manual edits required. I do understand how, in general, using .oga might be preferable. But my impression is that for pronunciation files, .ogg is still widely used on Commons - even for newly created files. If our co-operation results in hundreds of new pronunciation files, how are we going to explain that the Tyap ones (all? partly?) will get a different extension than the Dutch ones. This means more work to add the sound files of the partner project. May I kindly ask you to give these files the .ogg extensions as your contribution to our cooperation? MarcoSwart (talk) 20:55, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
@MarcoSwart Ah, that makes sense. Done. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 21:12, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

Cancellazione immagini

World by Dr. Henk C. Greven is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Ciao, fammi sapere Giwiller (talk) 21:55, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

@Giwiller I've undeleted those files. None of the links in the source field had the link with the license info. Please update the restored image pages (1 2 3) with that information. Thanks, —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 22:37, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
Ciao @Mdaniels5757, grazie per la spiegazione e per il ripristino delle immagini. Ciao e buon lavoro Giwiller (talk) 16:52, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

Twinkle Bugs

Hi Mdaniels, I went to add a speedy deletion tag to File:Schraube.gif for G10 deletion. In the edit where I used twinkle to add the tag, it took the whole file description with it. An admin pointed it out to me on my talk. Thought I’d let you know. Seawolf35 (talk) 21:20, 18 January 2025 (UTC)

Nevermind, just read the twinkle talk page and saw it got fixed yesterday. Thanks! Seawolf35 (talk) 21:22, 18 January 2025 (UTC)
@Seawolf35 No worries, thanks for reporting! —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 21:43, 18 January 2025 (UTC)

Category:Ala Praetoria Singularium

May I ask, why you want to keep the Category:Ala Praetoria Singularium. From my point of view, there's no need at all, since Category:Ala praetoria singularium exists. Greetings Agentjoerg (talk) 01:34, 19 January 2025 (UTC)

@Agentjoerg Since both names are valid, and people might use either, we normally keep the redirect. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 01:36, 19 January 2025 (UTC)

Question

Hello, almost three years later, here I am: can you (re)check if this file was indeed a(n exact) duplicate? Maybe I got confused at the time, or maybe the source was mistaken. I know both articles, and I'm aware they are different. If you confirm they were duplicates, then I will upload the missing one—if I find it freely licensed. Best regards, RodRabelo7 (talk) 18:04, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

@RodRabelo7 The files are identical (I downloaded both and hashed them using different algorithms on my machine). The deleted file description page had the source set to "https://periodicos.unb.br/index.php/ling/article/view/20679" and the author field set to "Aryon Dall’Igna Rodrigues", if that helps. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 04:04, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

Suggestion for Deletion Notification Bot 2

As seen at e.g. User talk:Epicalalt395#File:SR-npc-Sven-removebg-preview.png, the bot includes the message "I'm a computer program; please don't ask me questions but ask the user who nominated your file(s) for deletion or at our Help Desk." in its notifications. Seeing that it took me a minute to spot that the identity of the nominator was actually included in the message, but in small, not very conspicuous text, between the big box and the final message. I think it would be more prominent (and thus more helpful) to incorporate a link to the nominator's talk page with the final message, e.g. as:

"I'm a computer program; please don't ask me questions but ask the user who nominated your files(s) for deletion on their talk page (user talk:Example) or at our Help Desk."

Although reading it back that wording could be improved to avoid the suggestion that the nomination happened on their talk page. A change similar to this should reduce the barriers to those who are not experienced wiki editors. Thryduulf (talk) 16:01, 13 March 2025 (UTC)

@Thryduulf Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, it would require a decent amount of code refactoring to make the nominator's name available in the final message. I'll definitely edit the final message to mention that the nominator is named in the text above and making the nominator's name a normal size, though. (Probably sometime this week?) Thanks again! —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 19:50, 13 March 2025 (UTC)

Finna images review

Hi. There're ~33,000 files pending review at Category:Finna review needed. Could you start your bot so it resumes the Finna task? Thanks! -- DaxServer (talk) 20:25, 7 April 2025 (UTC)

FYI: I noticed that Deletion Notification Bot 2 had left a red link here to Commons:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion G3. Should it have been a link to Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion#G3? In this case, I don't think it really mattered; probably doesn't in most cases . Thank you for creating and maintaining Deletion Notification Bot 2! No need to reply unless you have questions. Cheers Adakiko (talk) 18:35, 21 April 2025 (UTC)

@Adakiko Should be fixed now! Thanks for letting me know. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 23:27, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
