В мозгу дофамин играет важную роль в регулировании чувств удовольствия и движения. Как часть системы регулирования чувства удовольствия, дофамин производится в телах нейронов, расположенных в вентральной области покрышки (ВОП), и высвобождается в прилежащее ядро и префронтальную кору. Его моторные функции связаны с другим путём: клеточные тела, производящие дофамин, расположены в чёрной субстанции, а высвобождение гормона происходит в полосатое тело.
