Trust the Metadata or nominate for copyvio?
These uploads by @Enhanced 1 appear previously online, examples include . However, they have decent metadata. And the username hints at Enhanced Games.
What's the reasonable approach? "The metadata probably means that "own work" is correct, let it be." or "Nom as copyvio, probably the usual "found it online and uploaded it", if I'm wrong it's up to the uploader to sort out the COM:VRT stuff." ? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:36, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

- @Gråbergs Gråa Sång, concerning EXIF / metadata: these datasets, the EXIF, aren't something that can be unconditionally trusted. Someone with a bit of computer knowledge can manipulate everything there, see the tools listed in Commons:Exif. BUT: you can use EXIF as hints and evidence for demonstrating a legitimacy in uploads! Internal (in one specific file) and external (over a file set) consistency is always a valuable sign (it's quite difficult to emulate a faked EXIF set with data for camera model, shot time, exposure, ISO, aperture, focal length, serial numbers, software...) from a camera save for copying it from another genuine file, but that would introduce other inconsistencies (weird focal lengths or ISO values for instance). How to upload an image with the creator's permission?
I want to upload a company logo onto a wikipedia page. What proof of permission by the creator of the image is acceptable? Poojapanuganti (talk) 19:51, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- This is a hard question to answer in general.
- You say "I want to upload a company logo onto a wikipedia page" (I presume English-language Wikipedia, but correct me if I am wrong). Since you asked on Commons, not Wikipedia, do you specifically want to upload it Commons? If not, it is often easier just to upload directly to the English-language Wikipedia as en:Wikipedia:Non-free content, using en:Template:Non-free logo.
- "proof of permission": we need a license, not a generic permission. Commons:Uploading works by a third party#If you need to obtain a license for copyrighted work is probably the best explanation we have; some other sections of that page may also be relevant.
- If that doesn't answer your question, it would help a lot to say what company and (via a URL) what logo. - Jmabel ! talk 00:41, 4 June 2025 (UTC)

It is unlikely that there is an image of Muhammad Alimuddin is an adult that would be in the public domain both in the U.S and India. He was born in 1920. Anything published in India after 1935 would have still been in copyright in the U.S. in 1996, so it would still be in copyright now. (Even pictures that are PD just in India might be hard to come by. The picture would have to be no later than 1965, and if the photographer is known they would have to have died no later than 1965.) - Jmabel ! talk 23:28, 4 June 2025 (UTC)

- @Jmabel,Is there any way to upload his image?. I see some copyright images on Wikipedia. 獅眠洞 (talk) 09:48, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- @獅眠洞: the only legitimate way to place a copyrighted file on Commons is to find out who owns the copyright and get them to offer a free license.
- Outside of Commons, it would of course depend where you wanted to upload it and for what purpose. For example, en:Wikipedia:Non-free content allows that for a deceased person who is the subject of a Wikipedia article and for whom no free image is available, en-wiki will host one low-resolution image of that person for use of the article. That does not involve Commons at all, and if you have further questions about it, ask them on en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 18:41, 5 June 2025 (UTC)

Flickr location searching
Apologies that this isn't 100% related to Commons, but it's a question related to finding images for Commons, and I have no idea where else to ask since I don't really use Flickr very much.
I'm trying to find images for a WP article using Flickr, but I'm very aware that a lot of Flickr photos have generic names and no descriptions, so instead I'd like to search for images taken in a specific location. There's Map, but it doesn't zoom in far enough for my purposes and doesn't give a straight-up list of images or a date range option (the latter is important for what I'm looking for). Is there any way to get Flickr images from a specific location, preferably within a date range? Suntooooth (talk) 02:09, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- While Flickr has tools to find photos within date range (at least for logged in users), it does not have specific search by location. Only a portion of Flickr images have Flickr Map information; for photos without embedded geolocation it is often added by the users, frequently being very approximate and often off by miles. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 03:51, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- Strange that they've gone to the trouble of setting up the Map page but not a proper "search by location" function. Suntooooth (talk) 17:38, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
Help - Posting an article

I've got an article I'd like to post regarding a company that has helped build housing for blue collar workers and established a lot of work in building a better future for blue collar workers. I'd like help on how to know if this article is alright for posting or not. The article talks about the company's history, how many buildings they have and also what industries they have contributed to and in what ways.
What do I need to look for in order to avoid rejection?

Uploads are being blocked somehow
I have uploaded many files to Wiki Commons using the standard uploader, but since getting my new Windows computer with Defender my uploads are somehow blocked with the message "No internet connection". Of course I have high speed cable connection and am constantly on the web. Is the problem that the file has EXIF metadata? Is the problem on my device or are there undocumented restrictions on the site? Quinet (talk) 17:25, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- The actual message is "Could not connect to the server. Make sure you have a working internet connection and try again." Quinet (talk) 17:28, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- depends on your internet provider, the software you have, or your browser being out of date,
- EXIF data shouldnt cause this, but if you took the image with a phone it might contain location data of yours, so make sure to double check.
- you mentioned Windows defender like it had to do with something, but you only mentioned it once, maybe check your firewall? 140.82.178.97 17:50, 5 June 2025 (UTC)

I want to upload a screen shot of an image of an article about Wikipedia. Is that allowed? MotherBoard1994 (talk) 19:52, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- @MotherBoard1994: probably not. To be uploaded to Commons it would have to be either in the public domain or free-licensed. Few such articles would qualify for either. Cannot explain search results
Hi, I'm using queries to add my uploads to user categories (and other things). I'm wondering why searching for
author:Plozessor -incategory:"Photos by Stephan van Helden"
via "Special:Search" or API returns, in addition to the correct results, these three items:
- c:File:MelanieGriffits-CarnavalMDP2025-Plozessor-crop.jpg
- c:File:MelanieGriffits-CarnavalMDP2025-Plozessor.jpg
- c:File:Wiki Loves Earth 2014-2016 Workshop.pdf
While I uploaded the first two files (but are not mentioned as author in the description), I have nothing whatsoever to do with the third file (except that I had added it to my user category in the past due to the same error).
Does anyone have an idea why these files are in the results? Is it a bug? Or is my query wrong? --Plozessor (talk) 18:07, 8 June 2025 (UTC)

- @KansanCommenter Hello! Commons has strict rules and only accepts free content per Commons:Licensing, and those rules have a lot of detail. It depends on country of origin, date of publication, when did the photographer die etc.
- However, English Wikipedia has a rule that very simplified says "since Llewellyn M. K. Boelter is no longer with us, we'll allow one non-free pic of him in the article about him". So I just added this pic to that article. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:53, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
Image looking washed out/less saturated unexpectedly?
I was making these two cropped images (1, 2) from this image. Frustraitingly, as I was about to use it, I realise that the saturation doesn't seem to match, with the new cropped images being much less saturated, and I can't work out why. Any help how it can get the cropped images to not have a wrong saturation would be appriciated Bejakyo (talk) 10:32, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- What software are you using to make these crops? I know that, when I've worked with anything taken by Carol Highsmith, I've had to manually add a colour profile to get colours that reflect her TIFs. It's possible that colour profile issues may be happening here. The crops seem a bit cooler in their lighting, too. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 10:43, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- ah ok. I'm using paint.net, which I imagine is perhaps not fitting for cropping that base image in that case as I don't believe it can do anything with Colour profiles. It's odd as I've never seen an image change in a way like this from online to editing program.
- Would it be possible for me to request to delete those two images I cropped in that case? I was creating them to replace some CSS cropping I had done, but it seems like it may be more effort than it's worth! Bejakyo (talk) 10:52, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- A lot of software does undisclosed "tweaks", so it might be worth looking into Commons' own crop tool for this need (Commons:CropTool). The existing crops can be tagged {{SD|G7}} (author request) for speedy deletion. That being said, Asclepias has a good point about the copyright; unless the copyright was transferred to the Green Party as part of his contract, they don't have the right to release it under a free license. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 11:30, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- Not answering the technical question, but before you spend too much effort on this particular image, you might want to obtain a free license from Gary Lawson, the photographer. As can be seen in the EXIF data, the copyright remained with the photographer. The Bristol Green Party flickr account cannot offer it as public domain. Unless there is evidence that Gary Lawson renounced his copyright. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:18, 9 June 2025 (UTC)

photo of artwork
I would like to upload a photo of an artwork by the artist Harry Elliott, it is a photo I took myself. The work was done in the 1910s, is this ok in terms of copyright? RainDesign42 (talk) 12:51, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- Do you mean French artist en:Harry Eliott? If yes, then no, it would not (yet) be ok, because he died in 1959, and consequently his works are still protected in France until the end of 2029. So it would be ok here in 2030. One thing you could do is upload the file, have it immediately deleted again by an admin (like me, or another, see COM:A), and mark it for undeletion in 2030 (Category:Undelete in 2030). Or upload the file to the English wikipedia, where 1910s artwork should be ok because it is already in the public domain in the United States. --Rosenzweig τ 13:03, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- Got it, thanks. And yes, it is the French artist Harry Elliott.
- Can I use a link to an auction site that has photos of his works? RainDesign42 (talk) 14:23, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- For what purpose would you need such a link to an auction site? --Rosenzweig τ 15:00, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- Just as an option to uploading my own photo of the artist's work, since the auction house has already made this image available on the internet. I was wondering if this could be a way to avoid copyright issues. RainDesign42 (talk) 23:32, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- If the work were free of copyright (which it sounds like Elliott's works are not), and it is strictly two-dimensional (because images of three-dimensional works always involve copyrightable creative choices by the photographer), then an auction house would be as good a source as any, and a page on their website could be linked as the source of an image. But that will in no way "avoid copyright issues" if the underlying work is copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 06:05, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

- And if I can piggyback off of this, photos you take are licensed by you as the copyright holder however you want it to be licensed, but starting in 2030, you could also upload faithful reproductions of his artwork by others as long as this does not include extraneous elements. So, if someone issues a print or stamp or some other 2-D artwork that is just a copy of his art, then there is no copyright protection in the United States for that work. If someone else goes to an art gallery and snaps a photograph of a painting, including its 3-D frame and general placement in the location, then that could be covered by a copyright in the United States. Sorry if that is too much information, but I figured it could be useful if you have other works by this artist that you want to have uploaded here. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 16:28, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- My photo is just a full-screen snap of the artwork itself, without a frame or background. There is also a website & Insta page dedicated to Harry Elliott's work, so there are images out there but none on his Wikipedia page. I wonder if its possible to enrich his page. RainDesign42 (talk) 00:15, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- If you want it for the en.wp article and this is a 1910s work as you wrote, you can upload the file right now to en.wp (en:Special:Upload). Use the PD-US-expired-abroad license tag, like this:
{{PD-US-expired-abroad|2030}}

Question about Law of Malaysia website
I'm not sure whether this is the correct place to ask, but hopefully I can find guidance for this burning question.
As a user specializing in law, I previously had access to the Law of Malaysia website, maintained by the Attorney-General's Chambers of Malaysia. A few years ago I could no longer access the website, not even the AGC's website at here. Originally I thought they changed their website, but strangely, I was able to access the websites when I went to another place, which means that their websites are still alive.
Is it caused by some sort of geographical IP block? Any explanations would be thanked.廣九直通車 (talk) 13:53, 14 June 2025 (UTC)

Joining deletion requests (adding a single into a mass DR page)
Hello,
can someone please teach me how to best join deletion requests? I'd like to have Commons:Deletion requests/File:MN Moby Drea 30-03-2011 Genova.JPG in Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Moby Drea (ship, 1975). Both were opened by me, the former earlier than the mass DR.
I'm thinking about modifying the DR link in File:MN Moby Drea 30-03-2011 Genova.JPG to point to the mass DR and list the file there manually. Then, the "single" DR page could either be speedied or made into a redirect. Would that be to right thing to do? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 13:19, 15 June 2025 (UTC)

You tube video
How do I upload this - it's on instagram. How do I save to photos or simply upload? Worcesterblackpear (talk) 08:12, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- You do not! At least not for an upload on any Wikipedia or Commons page. It is too likely that it'll be a copyright infringement. If you want so save something on your own hard disk for you in private, use a classical Windows or Linux PC and some readily available downloading tools; but Common is not a site to ask for help on how to do that. YouTube capture upload question
Some captured images from YouTube videos are uploaded here. I wonder what conditions are required. --Heiliges (talk) 10:08, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- The same as for everything else: being compliant with COM:Licensing and COM:SCOPE. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:21, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- Also see Commons:YouTube files for more info. If a YouTube video has been released under a Creative Commons license, you will see it shown in the video's description. The license, of course, needs to be compatible with Commons (CC BY or CC BY-SA). Beyond the licensing, you should be sure the uploader has the rights to license the video (i.e. the video is their own work, and they are not just uploading someone else's video and erroneously marking it as freely licensed). You should also make sure the part of the video you are capturing is actually freely available. For example, if a freely licensed YouTube video uses a Getty image in part of the video, you can't upload a screenshot of that Getty image. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 10:34, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- If there is a "Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)" at the bottom of a YouTube video, can I upload a screenshot here? If so, how should I capture the screenshot? --Heiliges (talk) 10:38, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- That takes care of the licensing requirement (probably, could still be a copyright violation by the YT account), but you still have to make sure it's compliant with COM:SCOPE. Technically, for a screenshot, you choose the highest video quality available, go in fullscreen mode, press "Print screen" (The key to the right of F12), open a graphic editor (Irfanview, MS Paint...), hit "Ctrl + V" and then you save it as PNG. Or your operating system saves the screenshot upon pressing "Print screen" automatically, that's what Ubuntu does, for instance. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:53, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc: any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so @Heiliges please upload a jpg version instead. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:12, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- But there's no need to use a lossy compression when a lossless format is available and sensible to use. A reminder: we're not a provider for thumbnails, but for illustrations in the best quality possible. Instead of PNG, a LZW-compressed TIFF is also possible. But, Jeff G., you surely do not expect a person who's apparently not knowledgeable about how to take a screenshot with PC operating systems to delve into the finer details of graphic file formats, do you? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 19:32, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc: That depends on their intended use; if on a WMF project in less-than-full size, I stand by my recommendation. See also http://www.take-a-screenshot.org/. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:23, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

- There's no way to do this. Every edit is tied "forever" to the account performing it, that includes uploads. You can only state that "Grumpy626" is an old account of yours on your new userpage. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 23:05, 11 June 2025 (UTC)

- By the introduction, I thought that account A, "Grumpy626", had a significant number or edits, precluding any takeover or whatever (if that's still possible now, after the SUL finalising). The Grumpy626 operator lost his access to that account and made a new one, account B, "Grumpy3100". I do not think that renaming in any direction is able to transfer the Grumpy626 edits and uploads to Grumpy3100. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 01:43, 12 June 2025 (UTC)

This user has been moving a bunch of categories without updating the actual files the cats contain. What should be done here? '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talk • contribs) 04:52, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
- @CanonNi: The first thing would be to let them know it's a problem. Leave a message on their talk page, for example. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:19, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
- @CanonNi: Also, they might be planning to let the bot do the moves. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:22, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Auntof6: It doesn't appear to be so simple. There's the move of multiple subcats from "Ernst & Young ..." to "EY ..." while the main cat is still Category:Ernst & Young. Similarly, there's an even larger move of subcats from "Dunkin' Donuts ..." to "Dunkin' ..." while the main cat is still Category:Dunkin' Donuts. There's also the move of Category:PBS member stations to Category:Logos of PBS member stations. On the surface, it would appear to be a competency thing. However, there's an obsession with television logos in their contributions in general and further competency issues therein, which led someone to reference Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/Jordanene7 and wonder if it's time to revisit that. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 07:05, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
- Digging further, there's a months-old CFD where an active Wikipedia editor requested renaming a single category of TV station logos because "that's how we name them on Wikipedia", already the source of a great many categorization problems throughout Commons. It appears TyraFan638 took it upon themselves to perform a mass rename without letting the discussion run its course. In all fairness, Commons CFDs have largely been proven to be as useless as tits on a boar hog, but I would agree that bypassing discussion of something of this scale is improper. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 07:21, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
- @RadioKAOS: Still, I think the first move is to try to communicate with the user. It doesn't look like anyone has done that.
- As for CFDs, I've been trying to go through some old ones. If you point me to the CFD, I'll take a look at it.

Definition of "non-contributor" and "no constructive global contributions"
To invoke COM:CSD F10 it requires the image be a personal photo by a non-contributor who have no constructive global contributions. Does that mean if the user has uploaded one constructive image on Commons (and done nothing else on any other Wiki) it disqualifies his twenty selfies for speedy deletion? (extreme example, but hopefully it adds clarity to the question) Thanks, Nv8200pa (talk) 15:05, 12 June 2025 (UTC)

Updating template from Graph to Chart
Hey there. I'm working on updating the "Outer_planet_moons" Wikipedia template from the legacy Graph extension to the new Chart extension. In trying to follow the instructions and now have the appropriate ".tab" file in the wikimedia commons ("Data:Outer_planet_moons.tab") with all of the data (copied from the "Graph" version of the template) and the ".chart" file. I have left the "Categories" attribute empty in the .chart file. For now, I've just updated the "Moons of Neptune" Wiki page directly, replacing the reference to the "Outer_planet_moons" template with a reference to the "ChartDisplay" template, specifying the .chart and .tab files there. I'm a real noob here, so I didn't want to go mucking with the existing template. Esp666 (talk) 19:24, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
- Convenience links:
- I think those are all of the pages referenced without links in the post above.
- @Esp666: I'm not sure what exactly the help question is here. Nothing in your post seems to ask anything. - Jmabel ! talk 01:46, 13 June 2025 (UTC)
- I was hoping (although, I admit that it wasn't clear!) that somebody could tell me the correct mechanism for inserting the graph with the new Chart extension. Do I just use the "Template:ChartDisplay..." as I have currently done in the "Moons of Neptune" page. If so, I suppose the next step would be to replace just about all of the {{Outer planet moons} template with the reference to "Template:ChartDisplay" as I used directly for Neptune.
- Is this correct next step? Esp666 (talk) 21:31, 14 June 2025 (UTC)

- Thanks for response.
- At the request of the subject I am trying to erase his birth date because there is confusion as to its correctness.
- And secondly trying to replace the still photo from Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth by a better one, the copyright being free to the subject, and also in the public domain.
- The process of editing is rather complex for me. I hope you can help. (or I can ask Robin Hawdon to verify these changes?)
- James Oldroyd. James Oldroyd (talk) 08:03, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
- You have repeatedly uploaded photographs without an appropriate licence, lately saying that the photographer gave permission to the subject for its use. You have provided no evidence of such permission.
- See Commons:Uploading works by a third party.
- You may be blocked from editing if you upload images contrary to our copyright policies again. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:53, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
- @James Oldroyd: Still no indication here of what page you want to change, or where a birthdate comes into the matter of a photo; no link for "Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth" (there is no en:Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth, there is no Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth, there is no Category:Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth). If you want someone to give you help, give them enough information that it is not a major research project to work out what you are asking. - Jmabel ! talk 18:03, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
- Please look at the OP's contributions. They have uploaded File:WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH.jpg. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:10, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
- Still doesn't make it clear what their questions are.
- FWIW: The stated grounds for copyright in File:WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH.jpg seems to me to be a mess, and while I suppose we should let VRT play out, I cannot see how this can possibly be OK. If the photographer is unknown, it clearly cannot be {{Self}}. Also, there is almost no likely scenario in which the subject of the photo would own the copyright.
- @James Oldroyd: I really don't follow what you want something to do, but it is hard to see how this photo could ever become appropriately licensed. I strongly suggest that you read Commons:Uploading works by a third party so that you have a better idea how to approach something like this if it comes up in the future. - Jmabel ! talk 01:34, 15 June 2025 (UTC)

Questionable text in source description for image
Hi, I recently noticed many wikis use the following image for their page for miniskirt: File:Chequered_Miniskirt.jpg
It seems to me as if the image description is a common form of bot spam, soliciting people to email the original uploader for invites to a social media site. The file has also been deleted off of flickr. Apologies if this isn't the best place to bring this up, but should this image have that part of the description modified, or should it be removed entirely?
Thanks, ScalarFactor (talk) 19:10, 14 June 2025 (UTC)

Uploading another person's Biography into Wikipedia
Hi Team,
I am assisting Mr. Simon Gimson to upload his biography into Wikipedia. Have been facing number of challenges. Could you please guide me with simple steps to upload?
Please do not keep sending links after links, as I am struggling to understand the pathway to get this completed.
Appreciate your support.
Thank you,
Kind regards,

- This is not Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons.
- I'm guessing you mean the English-language Wikipedia. If not, details may vary, but what I'm about to write will still be pretty accurate.
- You cannot "upload" a biography into Wikipedia. You have to write it in Wikitext, within the Wikipedia application.
- You say you are assisting someone with getting their own biography into Wikipedia. Clearly you have a potential conflict of interest here (Wikipedia editor vs. whatever relationship you have with the subject of the article). You absolutely should read en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest before proceeding, or you are almost certain to break rules and have your account blocked.
- The previous attempt to upload a biography may have been the deleted File:WikipediaSG.pdf. TSventon (talk) 21:04, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
Explanation of transaction process - Independently created, dependently sourced
Hi everyone. I've been working on a more in depth diagram based on information from this publication here (Figure A1). It contains information from the Reserve Bank of Australia, which does not authorize re-publication of their materials, but simultaneously I've changed or expounded on nearly all text and have found that the information could easily be sourced from several other places, though it would be a patchwork job of referencing. Where does policy sit on this? Any help would be appreciated, and my thanks in advance. Best - CSGinger14 (talk) 07:20, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
- Additionally, if it comes to pass that it it acceptable, can I rotate / crop the image before uploading? Apologies, my first time here and kinda necessary, it came out sideways and off-center exported as a pdf.
- Thanks - CSGinger14 (talk) 07:27, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
- We can't really advise without seeing the image. Please upload it, then we can discuss it. It's no shame to have an image like that deleted it it turns it to be unsuitable, or replaced if people make suggestions for improvement. - Uploading momentarily. Thanks - CSGinger14 (talk) 09:25, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
- Have just uploaded. That one can stay up if it ends up being alright but otherwise I plan to add a rotated version. Thanks again - CSGinger14 (talk) 09:34, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
- A link would be handy - File:BNPL Card Payments Scheme Diagram.pdf.
- I would say it needs to be an image (maybe SVG) rather than PDF to be used in articles. AIUI, if you make an SVG, it's also easier for other people to copy it and translate the text onto different languages.
- Finally you may want to look at using some indicator other than (or as well as) colour, for the different components, so that it works if printed in black and white, or for people with colour blindness. Maybe superscript letters, or different kinds of hatching. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:44, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Pigsonthewing thanks so much for your help thus far. Based on the color blindness palette scheme seen here (How to design charts with a color friendly palette), what colors would you recommend changing / switching out? I figured red and green would need to be switched, or made more pronounced, but otherwise I have difficulty with it cause I can’t really see a meaningful difference between most of those colors in the way that color blind people might. Thanks in advance - CSGinger14 (talk) 20:11, 15 June 2025 (UTC)

- Thanks for the ping. @Trade - interesting ideas. I just added those three properties to Commons Walkabout, to see how they would go. I'm not sure any of them are widely-used enough to really justify inclusion, though others may disagree. The "AI-generated prompt" one is quite interesting to look at, though - but unfortunately it's not currently working when you click on a value, because it's a property of type "Monolingual text", which is not supported yet. I may add support for this, because these are indeed interesting, even if they represent a tiny proportion of the overall files. Yaron Koren (talk) 16:48, 15 June 2025 (UTC)

- Wikidata items are not supposed to use English names when said name is identical to the "mul" name. This is something that needs to be fixed on Walkabout's end Trade (talk) 12:47, 16 June 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, Commons Walkabout doesn't yet handle default names, unfortunately. Tvpuppy - thanks for adding that workaround.
- Of these three newly-added properties/filters, by the way, "cosplay of" seems the most iffy, first because it's so minimally-used, and second (which may be tied in) because it doesn't seem quite correct. Shouldn't it always be "depicts → cosplay of"? After all, it's not the file/photograph that's doing the cosplaying. Commons Walkabout, by the way, can theoretically be used to query for the latter (see here), but right now the query always seems to time out. Yaron Koren (talk) 14:24, 16 June 2025 (UTC)
- "cosplay of" is a supproperty of "depicts" so it's already implicit that the cosplay is what is being depicted. If you are concerned about the properties used for SDC you should visit the Wikidata property proposals so you can participate in the discussion before they are created --Trade (talk) 00:03, 18 June 2025 (UTC)
- "cosplay of" seems the most iffy, first because it's so minimally-used" It takes more time for properties to get used because AC/DC cannot search subcategories + there are many characters which exists on Commons but not on Wikidata. And i dont think we should avoid subcategories entirely because of the limitations of AC/DC Trade (talk) 00:01, 18 June 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, I didn't realize that "cosplay of" was a subproperty of "depicts". (I assume "subproperty" was what you meant by both "supproperty" and "subcategory"). As for the fact that it's minimally-used - to me, it doesn't really matter what the cause is; the issue is whether the benefits of having that filter justify its inclusion. There are any number of minimally-used properties that could be added - "recordist", "date postally canceled", "file page offset" (plus many even less valid than those) - but they might start to overwhelm the actually useful filters. Ultimately, it's just a matter of opinion for each one. Yaron Koren (talk) 01:00, 18 June 2025 (UTC)

State and federal criminal cases
- Category:State of Minnesota v. Vance Luther Boelter
- Category:United States of America v. Vance Luther Boelter
What would the correct subcategories for these be? Trade (talk) 00:11, 18 June 2025 (UTC)
- The two are right. One category contain prosecution by "State of Minnesota" and the another category contain prosecution by "United States of America".
- In USA , you can be prosecuted by one of the 50 "states" and prosecuted by the "federal state".
- In this case , the person is accused of a "state offense" and a "federal offense".
- "State of Minnesota" prosectute this person under state statute. "United States of America" prosecute this person under federal law. Anatole-berthe (talk) 03:19, 18 June 2025 (UTC)

Pictures from my firm
Good morning,
I am currently working on updating the website "Roamer of Switzerland" who I work for. I have access to their servers, and tried uploading pictures from there. The pictures have been declined as it says they may not be original works. How can I get past this issue? It would really help.
kind regards,

- @Saschafromjdmswissgroup: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:50, 18 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Saschafromjdmswissgroup: It looks like your edits to en:Roamer of Switzerland violate the English-Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest and, in particular, en:WP:PAID. Please deal with that issue first.

FBI most wanted posters procedure
Hello, I am unsure if this is the correct place to direct this message to, but I am trying to get information on the correct procedure of FBI most wanted posters. From my understanding, since they are posted by the federal government, they should be public domain. However, I have gotten a series of speedy deletion requests for these posters under the notion that the images within the FBI poster may be copyrighted even though they mostly consist of mugshots and evidence photos. Given that the FBI are the ones who released the posters, which sometimes include several images of the suspect, does that mean we must figure out if the images within the poster themselves are somehow copyrighted? If the images within are, we cannot edit them out because editing official FBI posters is illegal according to 18 U.S.C., Section 709. Furthermore, wouldn't this mean that the FBI and every news agency that posts these posters at their request are also committing copyright infringement? This all seems very unclear if the argument for these speedy deletion requests is accurate. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. The posters in question can be found on my talk page. Thank you. DigitalPhantoms (talk) 17:52, 18 June 2025 (UTC)
- Typically the federal government does not own copyrights the photos on these posters. Either they have obtained relevant permissions explicitly or they are operating under fair use. - Jmabel ! talk 19:42, 18 June 2025 (UTC)
- So either way the argument of verifying copyrights of the individual images within as reason for deletion would be flawed would it not? DigitalPhantoms (talk) 19:52, 18 June 2025 (UTC)

Uploading photos of old newspaper articles
Hi team, I am wanting to upload a photo of an old newspaper article from 1993 as a source for an article I am writing - is this allowed? I appreciate your assistance! SLJ10 (talk) 18:14, 18 June 2025 (UTC)
- The upload is most certainly not allowed, as newspapers are in the vast majority of cases copyrighted (at least those as recent as the 1990's). But: apparently, you have the actual paper in your possession or can easily access it. Wikipedia articles can easily be sourced using something like en:Template:Cite journal (and the others from the cite family: en:Template:Cite book, en:Template:Cite web or whatever is relevant in your home wiki), you only have to state the biographical informations of your source(s). An actual hardcopy of them is not needed. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 18:28, 18 June 2025 (UTC)

AI images for reading nooks?

Que faire ? Merci. Loumalsace (talk) 10:30, 22 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Loumalsace: Bonjour, L'astérisque s'affiche normalement. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:49, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

Book file
Hello, I need help using an image on an uploaded book file for an English Wikipedia article: . Specifically, I wish to use the image on page 194. Should I screenshot and upload separately or is there another way to do it?
Could someone take a photograph of a thill for the Wikimedia project so I can add it to the Wiktionary?
The Wiktionary defines this word as "One of the two long pieces of wood, extending before a vehicle, between which a horse is hitched; a shaft." This makes perfect sense, but because we barely see horses in the First World anymore, it could use a visual aid. Shushimnotrealstooge (talk) 17:54, 22 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Shushimnotrealstooge: You'll find plenty of examples in Category:Horse-drawn vehicles. File:Two-wheeled horse-drawn farm cart in the Skye Museum of Island Life.jpg stands out as a good example, after taking a quick look through the collection. Belbury (talk) 18:05, 22 June 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. Say I made the image greyscale and highlighted the thills in red. Would that be appropriate? Shushimnotrealstooge (talk) 00:25, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
- Seen that they are already red (and the body of the cart green), I do not think that the hassle is worth it. Simply use text in the image legend, something like: "The thills are the red bars to the left of the wheel". But you're technically fine to make and upload a derivative of the image, if you want. There's nothing in our rules or licenses that forbid you in performing such a task. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 00:34, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

Hi! I'm writing a book I am modeling on another book that combined some Wikimedia photos, gave credit to them, and then posted the resulting photos on Flick.r. Am I permitted to post such photos on Wikimedia instead? I don't see combined images here much...but I know there's a lot I haven't seen! Convcat747 (talk) 20:02, 24 June 2025 (UTC)

Mentee encountering range block
A new user under the Growth:Mentor scheme has approached me on my en.wiki talk page, saying that they cannot log onto to Commons to upload images, because their IP range is long-term blocked. Suggestions on what they can do? AllyD (talk) 20:13, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
- @AllyD: this might be better asked at COM:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections. Unless there are issues of confidentiality involved, it would probably be useful to indicate the account in question when asking there. - Jmabel ! talk 22:37, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
Question about licensing requirements for a photo
I am consulting with a team who has asked me to replace the photo that is currently on the article on this page:
The photo currently on the page is of John Langeloth Loeb Jr. and my client has provided me with a photo of John Langeloth Loeb Sr.
For your reference the photo is on our Google Drive at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15NSXAfcFqI18UseZOlqQCl4H0JA0cgSA/view
They have given me the photo (3184px x 4242px) and 72 dpi but I'm not sure where I should upload it. Since this person is deceased I was thinking of going with the fair-use option. Do you think that's my best choice? If yes, are there any requirements for the size, dpi, etc. of the photo? If not, please advise me where I should upload this photo (Wikipedia vs. Wikimedia Commons) and any details about the licensing. This is my first time uploading a photo, so I'd appreciate any help / advice you can offer.
Thank you. Mybestwords (talk) 20:30, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
- The requirement is a free licence, see COM:Licensing. Requirements for size and DPI (the latter is freely configurable, anyway, 72DPI only tells a displaying machine to put 72 dots per inch on a paper, that's irrelevant for digital files) are non-existent. Fair use is not an option here. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:35, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Mybestwords: As a photo by Yousuf Karsh, it is probably not free for Commons. You can try to upload it to Wikipedia under the non-free content tolerance practice. (Strictly, it might not be "fair use", because it would not be used in the context of a commented study of the photographic work of Karsh. "Fair use" makes sense only in relation to what is copyrighted. And what is copyrighted in this image is the photographic work of Karsh, not the face of JLL Sr. which is not copyrighted. But it might be "non-free content" tolerated in practice on Wikipedia in the article about the subject.) In the description page of the file on Wikipedia, you can use a non-free use rationale similar to the one currently used for the photo of JLL Jr., with necessary modifications about source, author, etc. Speaking of which, the photo of JLL Jr. should probably be deleted from Wikipedia for currently not meeting the condition even for "non-free content", unless someone can obtain a free license or find publication circumstances that would make it public domain. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:30, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Mybestwords and Asclepias: the current photo in the article is used on a fair-use basis, and this is a better photo, so it would probably be an acceptable substitute on the same basis, as long as we can attribute it correctly. You'd probably need to drop it to about 10% of that resolution for fair-use on en-wiki.
- Also, it sounds like you are working with (for?) someone closely connected to the subject of the article, and possibly on a paid basis. You should definitely read the English-language Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest before you accidentally get yourself in trouble there. (Though I now see looking at your edits that you may be fully aware of that.) - Jmabel ! talk 22:43, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Mybestwords: Before you upload a non-free photo, you should try to find public domain photos of the subject. Given the biography of the subject, businessperson, his work for the United States governement, involvement in politics, there are good chances that public domain photos may exist. Even under the non-free content practice, a non-free photo cannot be uploaded to Wikipedia if a free photo can be found. It can be a government photo or a photo published in a newspaper, without copyright notice or renewal, or for example a wedding photo published before 1930. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:15, 25 June 2025 (UTC)

- @Lionathelion: As discussed at Commons:Uploading works by a third party, which you should still read, this needs to go through COM:VRT. - I have a question about the rights. I used a KMZ map made by the National University of Colombia, at the map library headquarters. According to the website, they used these maps:
- Bogotá (a). Plate 227-IV-D. 1949;
- Bogotá (b). Plate 228-III-C. 1949;
- Bogotá (c). Plate 246-II-B. 1946;

- Engativá. Plate 227-IV- B. 1949;
- Chipaque. Plate 247-I-C. 1949;
- However, I haven't been able to find any information on the templates (their copyrights). I could only find one of them:
- Carta preliminar: Plancha 228-III-C-Bogotá (b), Cundinamarca - Cartografía histórica - Colecciones digitales - Biblioteca Virtual del Banco de la República
- I've already contacted the Military Geographic and Cadastral Institute, who created them, but I still haven't heard back, and I doubt I'll get a response before Friday (they placed a limit on images that day). What should I do about this? PatojuanC (talk) 02:15, 25 June 2025 (UTC)

Hi all,

- You can use {{Rotate}} with an appropriate parameter. - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 24 June 2025 (UTC)

Uploading multiple seals of Indiana government departments
Im pretty new to Wikipedia, and im curious if im able to upload files for the Indiana Adjutant General, Indiana Department of Health, and Indiana Department of Administration? Leanxishe (talk) 04:42, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Leanxishe: Hi, and welcome. In short, probably not, unless they are old enough or you can get permission (see COM:HIRTLE). I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work when uploading, rather than the work of someone in Indiana's government. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. The actual copyright holder needs to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so they may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the file may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 04:59, 26 June 2025 (UTC)

Is it possible to upload a very large video file?
You might or might not have read about the release of the first images from the Vera C. Rubin telescope this week. Some of these images have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as they have a CC BY 4.0 licence (link below to the Media Use Policy). One of the available releases is an awe-inspiring video showing an image nicknamed the Cosmic Treasure Chest which zooms in and out of what is a very large image at source. The video, which is 57 seconds long is under a CC BY 4.0 licence but has a size of 799 MB. I thought about trying to upload the video file but it seemed too large and I couldn't download it anyway (link below). I got round this by lashing together a picture and link to the file which is available on the WP article page and seems to have stuck for 24 hours.
So the very simple question is can someone from Wiki Commons admin or similar transfer the available video file to Commons? Is the file too large - it is certainly in the public interest and could then be linked to easily in any article in which it is useful (in any langauge). After watching the video, you could see its relevance.

If you already have an appropriate file type, then you can use tools like User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js for chunked uploads. https://video2commons.toolforge.org/ will both convert video to an appropriate file format and help you publish it to the Wikimedia Commons. I have personally uploaded multi-gig files, so one that is 780-some MB is doable. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 12:10, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
- Thankyou for your advice. To sort this I used the 10 MB .mp4 preview file which I saved from the website and then converted to a .webm using FreeConvert. - OK great for uploading a webm of the original file. When I tried to download it would stop half way through 'due to network error'. So the compromise of using the preview worked OK and might be more smartphone-friendly. The full size webm upload looks very good, although I am confused somewhat by which version is which. I'll make the link in the WP article later today, though this will likely leave the screenshot image of the title page redundant, but I guess it should be kept for reference and look back.Richard Nowell (talk)

Technical issues? submitting QI nominations
Hi, I'm trying to nominate images for QI designation, but I'm having (what I think are) technical issues.
Using the suggested QI nomination syntax
- If I use the suggested nomination syntax: File:ImageNameHere.jpg|{{/Nomination|Very short description --~~~~ |}}
- e.g., File:20240506 tree swallow keeney cove PD203406.jpg|{{/Nomination|Tree Swallow, resting. Keeney Cove. Glastonbury, CT USA --~~~~ |}} and I submit, my signature does not show up via the 4-tildes expansion ~~~~
- See this image for an example: File:Problem with my qi noms.png
- As you can see, the tildes don't "expand."
- This doesn't appear to be a javascript issue because I can get the ~~~~ signature to work on the Sandbox.
- I've disabled all other gadgets and disabled all browser extensions (also tried different browsers), but nothing has fixed the "no-tildes expansion on the QI nom page" issue.
Using the QINominator Gadget
- If I use the QINominator gadget, there's supposed to be a green bar that shows up when you edit the source of the QI nomination page.
- I never see a green bar when I "edit source."
- Someone else raised this identical issue several months ago, but that person has not gotten a response.
- Again, I've disabled all other gadgets and disabled all browser extensions, but nothing has fixed the "no green bar" issue.
Hard coding my QI nominations
I've previously resorted to hard-coding my QI nominations, but that's fraught with issues because I've made syntax errors in my submissions and 1) I'm not sure what the proper procedure is for correcting such errors and 2) the whole process has made me gun-shy.
Advice?
Any suggestions on how to find a fix for either of the two standard approaches for nomination? Is there some non-obvious syntax issue or an improper preference that I've set incorrectly?
Thanks!
Pdanese (talk) 18:21, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
(see? tilde-expansion works here!) Pdanese (talk) 18:21, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
- It's weird that the tilde-signature works for you here, but not there. Maybe try using another device to test and see if the problem still exists. You can also try testing it with your current device but with another account or without logging in (you should preview the result to test rather than submitting it). Then, you should know if the problem is related to your account or your device.
- Side note, if somehow the problem can't be fixed, then I suggest maybe it will be easier to first edit in your userspace/sandbox, then transfer the code (with the signature expanded) to the QI nom page.
- Tvpuppy (talk) 23:13, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Pdanese I did some testing, if I turn off JavaScript for my browser, the tilde expansion still works for me in the sandbox and here, but it will not work in the QI nom page. So it is most likely a JavaScript issue. Tvpuppy (talk) 23:24, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Tvpuppy
- Thanks for the suggestions, especially. They're excellent (especially the one about working in the sandbox and transferring over).
- I thought it might be a javascript issue (in fact I'm sure it is some weirdness w/ javascript), but I don't have a javascript blocker on my browser--and I disabled every extension that I *do* have, so I'm perplexed.
- But your other suggestions are really good.
- Thanks again.

How to make a new licence template?
Hi, I would like to make a small template to indicate that certain Australian Defence Force flags and emblems have non-copyrights restrictions on their use in Australia. Are there any resources are guides to help make something like this? Safes007 (talk) 06:00, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- "Non-copyright restrictions" are not for "licence templates" (which by definition are about copyright), but you can take an existing template like {{US-insignia}} and copy it, then modify the contents to suit your needs. Bonjour,
Salutations, Grand-Duc (talk) 08:46, 27 June 2025 (UTC)

Name of category, and use of gallery page
I have two related questions.
I've uploaded scans of almost all the pages of the Songbook of Zaghere van Male. There was an existing category, Chansonnier de Zeghere van Male, so I used that. But Commons:Categories says that category names should generally be in English. As far as I can tell, "Songbook of Zaghere van Male" is the usual English name; should I ask for the category to be renamed?
Secondly: at present, the gallery page Songbook of Zeghere van Male contains all the thumbnails, because its source is the input to the scripts I wrote to do the upload. This seemed like a good idea at the time, but the page now contains over a thousand thumbnails and takes ages to load. Should I replace it with a sort of "best of" page? I'll soon be uploading the cropped illuminated letters, so those will belong on there too. Marnanel (talk) 15:02, 27 June 2025 (UTC)

Copyright
I want to write a new article about the YouTuber MAKiT, and I have a question about copyright. Am I right, when I upload the images on Upload Wizard, toggling the written consent, they shouldn't get taken down? Because I uploaded an image and it got taken down, although the owner of the image wrote an email to the Wikipedia mail, only about 12 hours after the upload. How should I do it, so it doesn't get taken down? I thought it would be you can upload it, and when within 30 days, the mail is written with the consent, it stays online, and if not, it gets taken down. Adrian Siebenrock (talk) 15:40, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Adrian Siebenrock: a lot of that isn't very clear, especially since you don't mention a particular file and you have several deleted files. Looking more or less randomly at one of these, File:MAKiT.jpg, you did not indicate any license at all, nor did you indicate that permission was pending. Also, not clear what you mean by "the Wikipedia mail". Have you read Commons:Uploading works by a third party (especially the latter portions)? It looks like you skipped at least two steps that are spelled out there, maybe more. - Jmabel ! talk 18:31, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, with the File:MAKiT.gpg I did it wrong, because I wasn't sure how to do it. There my question is, if I can reupload it with the right license or can I update it? Then I uploaded the File:Thnickles.jpg and toggled the thing, where the original creator confirms, that I may use his image. With the Wikipedia mail I mean the mail the original owner of the image has to write and confirm he has given me the license. Did I do it correctly? Because the owner of File:Thnickles.jpg has written and confirmed my use and it still got taken down or at least reported Adrian Siebenrock (talk) 20:49, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Adrian Siebenrock: Don't re-upload a file, start an undeletion request. Though, in this case, assuming you still have a copy of the photo (or if it is elsewhere on line), it might be simpler to have the copyright-holder just attach/reference that when they write to the VRT, and then get it undeleted once their process is complete.
- For File:Thnickles.jpg, (1) it is not obvious to me that this is in scope, but presuming it is you still need to indicate what is the (anticipated) license; also, you need to add categories.
- I'm not sure whether you reference to giving you a license is just loose speaking or an error. They need to grant a sufficiently free license as described at COM:L.
- Again, all of this (and more) is covered at Commons:Uploading works by a third party, which you should read if you have not. - Jmabel ! talk 21:40, 30 June 2025 (UTC)

- The name is wrong and the pictures are not right to be used in this way to spread lies about this person, very bad for the person who is not alive. Remove the information you posted immediately under the made-up name Maloosak because it is not her real name.
These images falsely present a deceased person using a name ("Maloosak") That's not her name and it's wrong not to write the actor's name correctly, misleading information. The person did have a career as an actress, but under a different real name. The materials incorrectly imply a history and identity that are fabricated. The Real Maloosak Born in 1974. A currently active artist. Her legal, registered name is Maloosak. Her images are authentic and may remain online. The Older Woman Was an actress in Iran during the 1970s. She was not named "Maloosak" She passed away, before the real Maloosak was even born. Since around 2020, someone has started uploading and spreading images of the deceased woman under the false name "Maloosak" – likely in an attempt to cause confusion and exploit the real artist Maloosak. This is misleading, harmful, and entirely unprofessional. Any images and content where the deceased woman is incorrectly labeled or referred to as "Maloosak" should be removed from: Wikimedia Commons, Picryl, GetArchive Any other platforms spreading this misinformation-should be removed- Many thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arken-B (talk • contribs) 23:14, 29 June 2025 (UTC)
- Would you like to answer the questions asked by Jeff G. and rimshot above? Tvpuppy (talk) 23:41, 29 June 2025 (UTC)
Talking to you -To Jeff G and @Rimshot: Maloosak (actress) is a fictional or incorrect name. There are no verifiedtyder that that is her namesources or documentation . That’s precisely the issue – false information is being spread using a name that doesn’t belong to her. This is frivolous to post pictures of someone without to have more facts about the person and it spreads incorrect information about the person who posted the picture/ pictures of the dead actor and been dead for over 50 years.
Talking now -To Jeff G and @Rimshot:Yes I have replied Tvpuppy to Jeff G and rimshot, I am a freelance journalist and have looked into this matter. There is no reliable information or verified images online regarding this actor, who is being confused with the real Maloosak, who is still alive. They did not work during the same period, but efforts have been made online to make it seem that way by mixing up photos and information about the living Maloosak with the deceased actor, who only worked within the country Iran and was an actor. I think you should stop spreading images and information that are not accurate. You should also review what rights you have before using material found online or someone posting images and information incorrectly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arken-B (talk • contribs) 10:49, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Arken-B: you still have not answered the question of what was the actress's real name, and where you have at least one solid citation for that. Till you do that, all we have is what we had in your first post: one person saying the current state of things is wrong. Two people can have the same name, so the fact that they are two different people is not to the point. - Jmabel ! talk 18:24, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
Talking to you -To: Jmabel, Jeff G and @Rimshot: The problem here is not that two different people could have the same name. The issue is that there is no credible or original source that ever identified the deceased actress from the 1970s as being named That name has only appeared many decades later, with no historical or legal evidence to support it.
I am not trying to merge or confuse identities – I am trying to prevent confusion caused by a false retroactive labeling. This creates identity confusion with the real, currently living artist Maloosak, who was born in 1974 and has carried this name legally and publicly for decades.
There is also a growing pattern of this mix-up being intentionally exploited, and it's misleading the public, erasing the living person's identity, and falsely attaching a fabricated identity to a deceased person.
Unless, this labeling should be considered factually incorrect and misleading.
I kindly ask you to correct the captioning and remove references that wrongly associate the name "Maloosak" with the deceased woman. The burden of proof should be on those who added the name to begin with. The actor who is dead was not alive when Maloosak who is alive was born.@Arken-B: Talk — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arken-B (talk • contribs) 10:00, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Arken-B Do you really have that much trouble stringing four tildes together or pinging me when you are writing to me? Please sign your work. What name did Maloosak use before registering as Maloosak? How do you know all this? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:42, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
- Clearly this actress exists and has a name, but it seems Arken-B doesn’t know her name. So I just went ahead and look for what her name was in credit scenes for movies she was in.
- According to her IMDb page , she was in the movie “The Newly-wed Bride” (1977) . Fortunately, the full movie is available on YouTube , and at 3m50s you can see the name “ملوسک” on the credit, which matches her name in fa:ملوسک (which is pronounced similar to “Maloosak”).
- Whether this was her official English name or not, since most online sources commonly refer to her as “Maloosak”, I think this category is correctly named.

Talking to you -To: Jmabel, Jeff G and @Rimshot: The name “ملوسک” ("Maloosak") appearing in the credits of a 1970s Iranian film does not prove that it was the legal or full name of the actress. The actress in that film is not the same person as the artist legally named Maloosak, who was born in 1974 and is alive today. The actress had passed away before the artist Maloosak was even born. It is misleading and harmful to connect these two individuals as if they were one.Just because online sources have started referring to the 1970s actress as “Maloosak” recently does not make it historically or factually correct. This is a case of identity confusion and it needs to be corrected – not cemented by misleading metadata or categories.@Arken-B: Talk 13:43 2 July 2025 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arken-B (talk • contribs) 11:43, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
- No one is saying they're the same person. That's why they have different categories.
- We don't care if it's the "legal full name". Lots of people have pseudonyms, pen names, and stage names that are not their "legal full name".
- We're not deleting a category just because you are personally offended. So it's not clear that there is very much left for us to do here. GMGtalk 12:33, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
Talking to you -To: GMGtalk Jmabe l, Jeff G and @Rimshot:I fully understand that pseudonyms and stage names are common and acceptable – that’s not the issue here. The problem is not that a name is used, but how it is used:
- There is no verified historical or legal evidence that the older actress was ever named.

- You've already said all this repeatedly. We're aware that this is your view. If you have nothing new to add, I think we're probably done. GMGtalk 13:23, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
Talking to you -To: GMGtalk You are using a living person’s Wikipedia information to merge with a person who is deceased. These two must be clearly separated from each other. If you choose not to rely on accurate facts, that is your decision, but spreading false information is unfortunate. It is also disappointing that when someone tries to help you avoid sharing incorrect information, you try to override or dismiss them. Categories.@Arken-B: Talk 15:46 2 July 2025 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you feel that way, but it seems Ms. Maloosak will have to learn to cope with an obscure page on an obscure website named after a different person using the same name. GMGtalk 14:11, 2 July 2025 (UTC)

Talking now -To Jeff G and @Rimshot:This is done deliberately to cause harm and spread false information. There is a Swedish artist whose real name is Maloosak and who is alive today. At the same time, there was an older Iranian actress with the stage name Melousak, whose real name was Iran Jalali; she was active long ago and is now deceased. The problem is that someone is trying to confuse the two — that is, linking the Swedish Maloosak to the Iranian actress Melousak, even though they are completely different people. Using the wrong name like Maloosak for the dead person creates confusion and also disrespect towards both of them when there is a living person who legally has that name and is a famous artist. I know this can be found on the internet. I ask you not to have them on the same page but separate them by having different names and being different people. Stop spreading wrong information. Please remove the pictures where the actress's name is wrong. - Arken-B ! talk 20:33, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
