Maybe "deletion" does not save space on Commons, but it saves nonsense. Taylor 49 (talk) 19:57, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Why do you think we can choose to ignore COM:INUSE in a deletion request thread? If you really want Commons users to be able to impose their views on loads of sister sites - by the way, without notice to them because the bot that's supposed to do that hasn't been working for quite a while - you need to make an argument at Commons talk:Deletion policy, and ping me so that I can voice my strong opposition. But thinking you can overrule policy in a single deletion request thread is highly presumptuous and inappropriate. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:25, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

Out of scope. Unused! Lukas Beck (talk) 05:27, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

Added: The user added the image to his page after creating the deletion request. He uploaded it back in 2017 and hasn't had the idea of using the image to this day. That gives me the uneasy feeling that he just wants to avoid the justified deletion request and that doesn't work for me that way. Lukas Beck (talk) 09:47, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
  •  Delete It depicts nothing and has no educational value. And I don't think that placing it on a userpage changes anything here: Commons isn't a host for private images, that means an image may not be hosted "just for userpage" -- though we usually make an exception for portrait photos of users -- however this isn't one. --A.Savin 04:12, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
@A.Savin  Speedy keep Commons:Project scope#File in use in another Wikimedia project says:
The uploading of small numbers of images (e.g. of yourself) for use on a personal user page of Commons or another project is allowed as long as that user is or was an active participant on that project.
This suggests that the images may depict any subject; they do not need to be portrait photos of users. This is consistent with normal practice, as I understand it.
I think that when a user has over 100 000 contributions, including countless COM:QI, COM:VI and COM:MOTD, we don’t need to quibble over just 1 (one) user page image. Brianjd (talk) 15:12, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
Pinging @L. Beck. Brianjd (talk) 15:13, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
Don't get me wrong. If I upload a bad image and insert it on my user page because it means something to me personally, I have no problem with that. But that is not the case here. The user added the image to his page purely by chance shortly after the deletion request. Not the 5 years before but only after the deletion request was made. Will this now become common practice to prevent a deletion request and should everyone get away with it? Lukas Beck (talk) 19:02, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
The image was not uploaded "for use on a personal user page", but rather "for no use" instead. Also, I don't see how this discussion were eligible for speedy keep. Regards --A.Savin 03:19, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
I made this foto while traveling to Oslo (where I took two fotos that became QI) and for the reason that Donald Trump made his infamous "Last night in Sweden" remark shortly before. For me this is an important image that was virtually on my user page from the time I uploaded it. It never occured to me, that I would need to make this explicit, as it is literaly in the name of the image. C.Suthorn (talk) 09:49, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
C.Suthorn, fortunately Wikimedia projects are transparent enough to recognize such comments as blatant lies. The image was on your userpage not "virtually [...] from the time [you] uploaded it", but, to say exactly, from 24 Nov 2022. And yes it was uploaded as long ago as in 2017. Regards --A.Savin 10:34, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
--A.Savin 08:15, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

  •  Weak keep. While the photo is probably not educationally useful in most educational settings, and it's frankly not a terribly informative photo, I don't see why it's inappropriate to keep on one's own userpage. People are allowed to upload a handful of personal-use images provided they're freely licensed (which this photo is), so I don't see compelling reason to delete. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 15:24, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

No COM:FOP France for buildings/architecture. Of the building's 3 architects, the last living is en:Bernard Zehrfuss who died in 1996, so the building would still be copyrighted per COM:France.

  •  Keep I think that using French law for photos on land which is part of the UN is incorrect since they are not technically in that country, similar to how an embassy works, they are considered tiny areas of the other country. My understanding is, from working in the UN for 10 years is that they are outside their host country's laws. I will ask on the central copyright discussion page if there has been a previous discussion about this. Thanks, John Cummings (talk) 18:10, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
  •  Comment I've started the discussion here Commons:Village pump/Copyright#Copyright laws especially freedom of panorama for embassies, UN offices and other diplomatic areas of land John Cummings (talk) 18:19, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
  •  Comment per my comment on VP/C, French law applies. However, I make no comment as to the possibility of COM:TOO or COM:DM in these images. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 18:45, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
  •  Question Josve05a this image of the Eiffel Tower has a template which describes that "United States copyright law does not protect architectural works before 1 December 1990", does this mean that buildings in countries where there is no freedom of panorama can still be on commons if they were built before 1990? My basic question is why can we have a photo of the Eiffel tower but not the building literally down the road from it? John Cummings (talk) 21:07, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
The key distinction here involves the differences between U.S. and French copyright law, and how Commons requires works to be free in both the source country and the United States.
    • The Eiffel Tower (as a structure) was completed in 1889 and designed by Gustave Eiffel, who died in 1923. This means the structure itself is in the public domain in France (copyright expires 70 years post-mortem, i.e. by 1994). So under both French law and U.S. law, the architectural work is in the public domain and photos of it may be freely used.
      • That said, the lighting display added in 1985 is a separate, modern copyrighted artistic work, so nighttime photos of the Eiffel Tower may still be restricted under French law, but this doesn’t apply to daytime photos of the structure itself.
    • The UNESCO headquarters, by contrast, is a modern building. Its last surviving architect, Bernard Zehrfuss, died in 1996, so the building remains under copyright in France until 2066. Because France lacks freedom of panorama for modern buildings, photos of it generally cannot be hosted on Commons without permission.
So in summary, the Eiffel Tower is allowed on Commons because it is public domain in both France and the U.S., while the UNESCO building is still protected in France. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 21:27, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) The Eiffel Tower's creator Gustave Eiffel died in 1923, so its copyright expired 70 years later, and thus reproductions are allowed and photos can be uploaded to Commons. The UNESCO building (and its architects) are much newer, still under copyright, thus ineligible for Commons per COM:FOP France. More information about the Eiffel Tower's copyright is at en:Eiffel_Tower#Illumination_copyright. Consigned (talk) 21:29, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
  •  Question thank you very much for your replies, one other question, if this was deleted on Commons could it be used on Wikipedia under fair use? John Cummings (talk) 22:36, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
It could possibly be uploaded without needing to claim fair use: English Wikipedia primarily concerns itself with U.S. copyright law, not the laws of the source country when it comes to freedom of panorama, as explained in en:Template:Freedom_of_panorama (US only). According to the information available on en:Wikipedia:Freedom of panorama, even if the building is under copyright in France, it might still be usable on English Wikipedia, as long as the image complies with U.S. copyright law. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 23:04, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
Delete per Josve05a's comments at COM:VPC. Commons also deleted older images of UNESCO's HQ via Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:UNESCO building Paris. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 04:12, 4 May 2025 (UTC)

This photo is clearly professional quality, and has been used in UST's corporate communications (https://go.ust.com/hubfs/UST%20in%20The%20Week%20%7C%20Transforming%20Lives.pdf and https://www.ust.com/content/dam/ust/documents/UST-Sustainability-Report.pdf page 5), and is on the website https://www.ambitionbox.com/photos/ust-photos labeled "[provided] by employer" (i.e. the company).

If the uploader is the photographer or copyright holder, please provide permission to COM:VRT. Consigned (talk) 17:39, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

@Consigned -- the sustainability report was published after. The image has metadata, and the uploader made edits to the UST article (probably indicating an affiliation). JayCubby (talk) 17:44, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
The reports were published later, but the image's inclusion in those reports suggests that the photo is a corporate one, not an amateur freely-licensed photo. A company wouldn't use amateur or freely licensed photography in its corporate communications, and a corporate photographer (even freelancer) would not freely license it elsewhere. I suspect the uploader is affiliated with the company, and uploaded a corporate image that they didn't take themselves. Consigned (talk) 18:02, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

Mass deletion of redundant raster files

These are all redundant raster files that have been superseded by vector files. Most of these were from requests for vectorization I made over the past few years. --OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 18:50, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

Apparently the Gottlieb Institute does not exist and never did, therefore these are not its historic logos and this file is not within project scope. DS (talk) 21:11, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

File:Leslie D. Gottlieb 1999.jpeg

Uploader wrote a hoax article on enwiki about a nonexistent "Gottlieb Institute", and edited the article on Leslie Gottlieb to state that he had founded an institute, and uploaded a composite image of what were allegedly various logos that the institute used over the years. The article on enwiki currently has an image that was provided by Gottlieb's family, and it doesn't look that much like this one. As such, I am dubious that this image is actually of Leslie Gottlieb (here's another detail - the file's EXIF says it was taken in February 2013, over a year after Gottlieb died). We have lots of photos of people who are unidentified, or wrongly-identified, but largely those are uploaded in good faith. I don't think we can trust that this was uploaded in good faith. It might not even be properly licensed. As such, I feel we should not have it on Commons. DS (talk) 21:21, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
