Français : Un amphithéâtre est un bâtiment romain antique utilisé pour les spectacles de divertissement (sports, jeux, combats de gladiateurs). Nell'antichità classica (associato particolarmente all'antica Roma) veniva usato per i giochi gladiatori (chiamati anche munera) e per le venationes, ovvero gli scontri tra gladiatori (o uomini vestiti come essi) e animali (tra cui figuravano tigri, leoni, orsi, coccodrilli, rinoceronti etc.).
