Estimacions dels forçants radiatius mitjans global i els seus intervals el 2005 per als gasos hivernacle antropogènics i altres mecanismes i agents importants.

Comprendre l'escalfament global exigeix entendre els canvis en els forçants del clima que han ocorregut des de la revolució industrial. Aquests inclouen forçants positius degut a l'augment en la concentració dels gasos hivernacle, forçants negatius per l'increment d'aerosols de sulfat i forçants amb gran incertesa com els produïts per la realimentació d'aerosols indirectes així com contribucions menors de la variació solar i altres factors. La causa de les incerteses en el forçant dels aerosols resulten de la limitada comprensió física de com interaccionen amb l'atmosfera i la manca de coneixement de les concentracions dels mateixos durant el període preindustrial. Això és una font significativa d'incertesa quan comparem els forçants del clima moderns amb estats passats.

Al contrari de la impressió que pot donar aquesta figura, no és possible sumar simplement les diferents contribucions al forçant radiatiu de totes les fonts i obtenir així un forçant total. Això és degut a que els termes dels diferents forçants poden interaccionar entre ells, amplificant o interferint els uns amb els altres. Per exemple, en termes de gasos hivernacle, dos gasos diferents poden compartir les mateixes bandes d'absorció, limitant així parcialment la seva eficàcia quan es prenen en combinació.
