Trust the Metadata or nominate for copyvio?
These uploads by @Enhanced 1 appear previously online, examples include . However, they have decent metadata. And the username hints at Enhanced Games.
What's the reasonable approach? "The metadata probably means that "own work" is correct, let it be." or "Nom as copyvio, probably the usual "found it online and uploaded it", if I'm wrong it's up to the uploader to sort out the COM:VRT stuff." ? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:36, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

- @Gråbergs Gråa Sång, concerning EXIF / metadata: these datasets, the EXIF, aren't something that can be unconditionally trusted. Someone with a bit of computer knowledge can manipulate everything there, see the tools listed in Commons:Exif. BUT: you can use EXIF as hints and evidence for demonstrating a legitimacy in uploads! Internal (in one specific file) and external (over a file set) consistency is always a valuable sign (it's quite difficult to emulate a faked EXIF set with data for camera model, shot time, exposure, ISO, aperture, focal length, serial numbers, software...) from a camera save for copying it from another genuine file, but that would introduce other inconsistencies (weird focal lengths or ISO values for instance). How to upload an image with the creator's permission?
I want to upload a company logo onto a wikipedia page. What proof of permission by the creator of the image is acceptable? Poojapanuganti (talk) 19:51, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- This is a hard question to answer in general.
- You say "I want to upload a company logo onto a wikipedia page" (I presume English-language Wikipedia, but correct me if I am wrong). Since you asked on Commons, not Wikipedia, do you specifically want to upload it Commons? If not, it is often easier just to upload directly to the English-language Wikipedia as en:Wikipedia:Non-free content, using en:Template:Non-free logo.
- "proof of permission": we need a license, not a generic permission. Commons:Uploading works by a third party#If you need to obtain a license for copyrighted work is probably the best explanation we have; some other sections of that page may also be relevant.
- If that doesn't answer your question, it would help a lot to say what company and (via a URL) what logo. - Jmabel ! talk 00:41, 4 June 2025 (UTC)

It is unlikely that there is an image of Muhammad Alimuddin is an adult that would be in the public domain both in the U.S and India. He was born in 1920. Anything published in India after 1935 would have still been in copyright in the U.S. in 1996, so it would still be in copyright now. (Even pictures that are PD just in India might be hard to come by. The picture would have to be no later than 1965, and if the photographer is known they would have to have died no later than 1965.) - Jmabel ! talk 23:28, 4 June 2025 (UTC)

- @Jmabel,Is there any way to upload his image?. I see some copyright images on Wikipedia. 獅眠洞 (talk) 09:48, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- @獅眠洞: the only legitimate way to place a copyrighted file on Commons is to find out who owns the copyright and get them to offer a free license.
- Outside of Commons, it would of course depend where you wanted to upload it and for what purpose. For example, en:Wikipedia:Non-free content allows that for a deceased person who is the subject of a Wikipedia article and for whom no free image is available, en-wiki will host one low-resolution image of that person for use of the article. That does not involve Commons at all, and if you have further questions about it, ask them on en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 18:41, 5 June 2025 (UTC)

Flickr location searching
Apologies that this isn't 100% related to Commons, but it's a question related to finding images for Commons, and I have no idea where else to ask since I don't really use Flickr very much.
I'm trying to find images for a WP article using Flickr, but I'm very aware that a lot of Flickr photos have generic names and no descriptions, so instead I'd like to search for images taken in a specific location. There's Map, but it doesn't zoom in far enough for my purposes and doesn't give a straight-up list of images or a date range option (the latter is important for what I'm looking for). Is there any way to get Flickr images from a specific location, preferably within a date range? Suntooooth (talk) 02:09, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- While Flickr has tools to find photos within date range (at least for logged in users), it does not have specific search by location. Only a portion of Flickr images have Flickr Map information; for photos without embedded geolocation it is often added by the users, frequently being very approximate and often off by miles. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 03:51, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- Strange that they've gone to the trouble of setting up the Map page but not a proper "search by location" function. Suntooooth (talk) 17:38, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
Help - Posting an article

I've got an article I'd like to post regarding a company that has helped build housing for blue collar workers and established a lot of work in building a better future for blue collar workers. I'd like help on how to know if this article is alright for posting or not. The article talks about the company's history, how many buildings they have and also what industries they have contributed to and in what ways.
What do I need to look for in order to avoid rejection?

Uploads are being blocked somehow
I have uploaded many files to Wiki Commons using the standard uploader, but since getting my new Windows computer with Defender my uploads are somehow blocked with the message "No internet connection". Of course I have high speed cable connection and am constantly on the web. Is the problem that the file has EXIF metadata? Is the problem on my device or are there undocumented restrictions on the site? Quinet (talk) 17:25, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- The actual message is "Could not connect to the server. Make sure you have a working internet connection and try again." Quinet (talk) 17:28, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- depends on your internet provider, the software you have, or your browser being out of date,
- EXIF data shouldnt cause this, but if you took the image with a phone it might contain location data of yours, so make sure to double check.
- you mentioned Windows defender like it had to do with something, but you only mentioned it once, maybe check your firewall? 140.82.178.97 17:50, 5 June 2025 (UTC)

I want to upload a screen shot of an image of an article about Wikipedia. Is that allowed? MotherBoard1994 (talk) 19:52, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- @MotherBoard1994: probably not. To be uploaded to Commons it would have to be either in the public domain or free-licensed. Few such articles would qualify for either. Cannot explain search results
Hi, I'm using queries to add my uploads to user categories (and other things). I'm wondering why searching for
author:Plozessor -incategory:"Photos by Stephan van Helden"
via "Special:Search" or API returns, in addition to the correct results, these three items:
- c:File:MelanieGriffits-CarnavalMDP2025-Plozessor-crop.jpg
- c:File:MelanieGriffits-CarnavalMDP2025-Plozessor.jpg
- c:File:Wiki Loves Earth 2014-2016 Workshop.pdf
While I uploaded the first two files (but are not mentioned as author in the description), I have nothing whatsoever to do with the third file (except that I had added it to my user category in the past due to the same error).
Does anyone have an idea why these files are in the results? Is it a bug? Or is my query wrong? --Plozessor (talk) 18:07, 8 June 2025 (UTC)

- @KansanCommenter Hello! Commons has strict rules and only accepts free content per Commons:Licensing, and those rules have a lot of detail. It depends on country of origin, date of publication, when did the photographer die etc.
- However, English Wikipedia has a rule that very simplified says "since Llewellyn M. K. Boelter is no longer with us, we'll allow one non-free pic of him in the article about him". So I just added this pic to that article. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:53, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
Image looking washed out/less saturated unexpectedly?
I was making these two cropped images (1, 2) from this image. Frustraitingly, as I was about to use it, I realise that the saturation doesn't seem to match, with the new cropped images being much less saturated, and I can't work out why. Any help how it can get the cropped images to not have a wrong saturation would be appriciated Bejakyo (talk) 10:32, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- What software are you using to make these crops? I know that, when I've worked with anything taken by Carol Highsmith, I've had to manually add a colour profile to get colours that reflect her TIFs. It's possible that colour profile issues may be happening here. The crops seem a bit cooler in their lighting, too. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 10:43, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- ah ok. I'm using paint.net, which I imagine is perhaps not fitting for cropping that base image in that case as I don't believe it can do anything with Colour profiles. It's odd as I've never seen an image change in a way like this from online to editing program.
- Would it be possible for me to request to delete those two images I cropped in that case? I was creating them to replace some CSS cropping I had done, but it seems like it may be more effort than it's worth! Bejakyo (talk) 10:52, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- A lot of software does undisclosed "tweaks", so it might be worth looking into Commons' own crop tool for this need (Commons:CropTool). The existing crops can be tagged {{SD|G7}} (author request) for speedy deletion. That being said, Asclepias has a good point about the copyright; unless the copyright was transferred to the Green Party as part of his contract, they don't have the right to release it under a free license. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 11:30, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- Not answering the technical question, but before you spend too much effort on this particular image, you might want to obtain a free license from Gary Lawson, the photographer. As can be seen in the EXIF data, the copyright remained with the photographer. The Bristol Green Party flickr account cannot offer it as public domain. Unless there is evidence that Gary Lawson renounced his copyright. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:18, 9 June 2025 (UTC)

photo of artwork
I would like to upload a photo of an artwork by the artist Harry Elliott, it is a photo I took myself. The work was done in the 1910s, is this ok in terms of copyright? RainDesign42 (talk) 12:51, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- Do you mean French artist en:Harry Eliott? If yes, then no, it would not (yet) be ok, because he died in 1959, and consequently his works are still protected in France until the end of 2029. So it would be ok here in 2030. One thing you could do is upload the file, have it immediately deleted again by an admin (like me, or another, see COM:A), and mark it for undeletion in 2030 (Category:Undelete in 2030). Or upload the file to the English wikipedia, where 1910s artwork should be ok because it is already in the public domain in the United States. --Rosenzweig τ 13:03, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- Got it, thanks. And yes, it is the French artist Harry Elliott.
- Can I use a link to an auction site that has photos of his works? RainDesign42 (talk) 14:23, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- For what purpose would you need such a link to an auction site? --Rosenzweig τ 15:00, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- Just as an option to uploading my own photo of the artist's work, since the auction house has already made this image available on the internet. I was wondering if this could be a way to avoid copyright issues. RainDesign42 (talk) 23:32, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- If the work were free of copyright (which it sounds like Elliott's works are not), and it is strictly two-dimensional (because images of three-dimensional works always involve copyrightable creative choices by the photographer), then an auction house would be as good a source as any, and a page on their website could be linked as the source of an image. But that will in no way "avoid copyright issues" if the underlying work is copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 06:05, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

- And if I can piggyback off of this, photos you take are licensed by you as the copyright holder however you want it to be licensed, but starting in 2030, you could also upload faithful reproductions of his artwork by others as long as this does not include extraneous elements. So, if someone issues a print or stamp or some other 2-D artwork that is just a copy of his art, then there is no copyright protection in the United States for that work. If someone else goes to an art gallery and snaps a photograph of a painting, including its 3-D frame and general placement in the location, then that could be covered by a copyright in the United States. Sorry if that is too much information, but I figured it could be useful if you have other works by this artist that you want to have uploaded here. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 16:28, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
- My photo is just a full-screen snap of the artwork itself, without a frame or background. There is also a website & Insta page dedicated to Harry Elliott's work, so there are images out there but none on his Wikipedia page. I wonder if its possible to enrich his page. RainDesign42 (talk) 00:15, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- If you want it for the en.wp article and this is a 1910s work as you wrote, you can upload the file right now to en.wp (en:Special:Upload). Use the PD-US-expired-abroad license tag, like this:
{{PD-US-expired-abroad|2030}}

Question about Law of Malaysia website
I'm not sure whether this is the correct place to ask, but hopefully I can find guidance for this burning question.
As a user specializing in law, I previously had access to the Law of Malaysia website, maintained by the Attorney-General's Chambers of Malaysia. A few years ago I could no longer access the website, not even the AGC's website at here. Originally I thought they changed their website, but strangely, I was able to access the websites when I went to another place, which means that their websites are still alive.
Is it caused by some sort of geographical IP block? Any explanations would be thanked.廣九直通車 (talk) 13:53, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
- @廣九直通車: I can access https://lom.agc.gov.my/ from here in the US, perhaps you can use a proxy? At first, I could not access https://agc.gov.my/, but then I viewed source and was able to access the page behind the iframe, https://www.agc.gov.my/agcportal/frontend/web/. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:01, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
- I can access the former site from the UK.
- If I try to access the second, I get "To protect your security, www.agc.gov.my will not allow Firefox to display the page if another site has embedded it. To see this page, you need to open it in a new window. Learn more...", with the latter sentence linking to . Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:04, 14 June 2025 (UTC)

Joining deletion requests (adding a single into a mass DR page)
Hello,
can someone please teach me how to best join deletion requests? I'd like to have Commons:Deletion requests/File:MN Moby Drea 30-03-2011 Genova.JPG in Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Moby Drea (ship, 1975). Both were opened by me, the former earlier than the mass DR.
I'm thinking about modifying the DR link in File:MN Moby Drea 30-03-2011 Genova.JPG to point to the mass DR and list the file there manually. Then, the "single" DR page could either be speedied or made into a redirect. Would that be to right thing to do? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 13:19, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
Relevant source identification
Which sources we consider relevant and valuable... how do we identify Nitinrv0099 (talk) 02:32, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Nitinrv0099: there is no universal answer to this question. Could you please be more specific? (And are you asking this on the correct site? This is Wikimedia Commons, a media repository, and we don't usually have to evaluate sources here from any point of view other than whether their copyright claims are valid. Perhaps you meant to ask this on Wikipedia?) - Jmabel ! talk 06:08, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

You tube video
How do I upload this - it's on instagram. How do I save to photos or simply upload? Worcesterblackpear (talk) 08:12, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- You do not! At least not for an upload on any Wikipedia or Commons page. It is too likely that it'll be a copyright infringement. If you want so save something on your own hard disk for you in private, use a classical Windows or Linux PC and some readily available downloading tools; but Common is not a site to ask for help on how to do that. YouTube capture upload question
Some captured images from YouTube videos are uploaded here. I wonder what conditions are required. --Heiliges (talk) 10:08, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- The same as for everything else: being compliant with COM:Licensing and COM:SCOPE. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:21, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- Also see Commons:YouTube files for more info. If a YouTube video has been released under a Creative Commons license, you will see it shown in the video's description. The license, of course, needs to be compatible with Commons (CC BY or CC BY-SA). Beyond the licensing, you should be sure the uploader has the rights to license the video (i.e. the video is their own work, and they are not just uploading someone else's video and erroneously marking it as freely licensed). You should also make sure the part of the video you are capturing is actually freely available. For example, if a freely licensed YouTube video uses a Getty image in part of the video, you can't upload a screenshot of that Getty image. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 10:34, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- If there is a "Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)" at the bottom of a YouTube video, can I upload a screenshot here? If so, how should I capture the screenshot? --Heiliges (talk) 10:38, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- That takes care of the licensing requirement (probably, could still be a copyright violation by the YT account), but you still have to make sure it's compliant with COM:SCOPE. Technically, for a screenshot, you choose the highest video quality available, go in fullscreen mode, press "Print screen" (The key to the right of F12), open a graphic editor (Irfanview, MS Paint...), hit "Ctrl + V" and then you save it as PNG. Or your operating system saves the screenshot upon pressing "Print screen" automatically, that's what Ubuntu does, for instance. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:53, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc: any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so @Heiliges please upload a jpg version instead. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:12, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- But there's no need to use a lossy compression when a lossless format is available and sensible to use. A reminder: we're not a provider for thumbnails, but for illustrations in the best quality possible. Instead of PNG, a LZW-compressed TIFF is also possible. But, Jeff G., you surely do not expect a person who's apparently not knowledgeable about how to take a screenshot with PC operating systems to delve into the finer details of graphic file formats, do you? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 19:32, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc: That depends on their intended use; if on a WMF project in less-than-full size, I stand by my recommendation. See also http://www.take-a-screenshot.org/. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:23, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
