Category:SVG simplified arrows

Where is the difference to Category:SVG arrow symbols? 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 16:03, 13 December 2019 (UTC)

While SVG arrow symbols collects (hopefully) all SVG drawn arrows, the Category:SVG simplified arrows shows how diffferent arrows can be drawn with less effort. Like the other SVG Simplified categories, this one serves as an aid for users who are searching for help, and it fulfills somehow educational purposes. -- sarang사랑 16:27, 13 December 2019 (UTC)

Category:Terminalia acuminata

Under this name, three taxons are mixed up and we have to newly create Category:Terminalia phillyreifolia. MILEPRI, did you move Category:Anogeissus acuminata to this current one on the basis of these records on Catalogue of Life? Actually, new combination and new replacement name have already been published in Maurin et al. (2017) while Hassler, the database compiler seems to have overlooked heterotypic names, namely,

  • Anogeissus acuminata (Roxb. ex DC.) Guillaum. & Perr. --> Terminalia phillyreifolia (Van Heurck & Müll.Arg.) Gere & Boatwr. (op. cit., p. 321; found in Myanmar etc.)
  • Buchenavia acuminata Exell & Stace --> Terminalia duckei Gere & Boatwr. (op. cit., p. 320; found in Northern Brazil)

Both of these names avoid conflict with existing Terminalia acuminata Eichl., a species found in Southeastern Brazil. Please note that Hassler must have been aware of the article by Maurin and his fellows because of this record.

And then, we have to specify the obejects of all the existing images in this category, namely:

All of them except for the last one are Anogeissus acuminata, then should be located into Category:Terminalia phillyreifolia. The last one comes from Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden and the publication date of the above-mentioned article is Jul 1, 2017 I cannot judge precisely from these clues though Eichler's T. acuminata was known as guarajuba in earlier materials (like this one). --Eryk Kij (talk) 13:41, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Category:NDSM

What is the difference between Category:NDSM and Category:Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, Amsterdam? JopkeB (talk) 04:55, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

Explained in 2018 on the discussion page of category NDSM. Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, Amsterdam went bankrupt, after 1989 no shipbuilding anymore. The terrain is known now as NDSM terrain, even a quarter of Amsterdam. So old immages have to go to Category:Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, Amsterdam and new images to Category:NDSM, in my opinion. As suggested on that discussion page. --Stunteltje (talk) 07:10, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks a lot and apologies, I should have looked into the talk page. Because I agree that there is a need of a description, I just wrote an exploination on Category:NDSM. A pity that this was not been implemented earlier. Please correct or complete the description if you have more information. JopkeB (talk) 19:12, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

Category:Pauw

It looks like that this category is about the same pop group as Category:Pauw (Band); could these two categories be merged? JopkeB (talk) 08:14, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

The Dutch call this thing a Pauw
Jeroen Pauw, host of Pauw, a TV show with up to a million viewers
I suggest merging both into Category:Pauw (musical group). "Band" should not be capitalized anyway and "musical group" is a more broad term. For example, a choir is not a band. We should also not use Category:Pauw because Pauw is Dutch for a bird and the name of a popular TV-show. More popular than the band. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 16:06, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: Have you ever watched the TV show, seen the band perform or the bird fly? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 16:13, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
Comment This category name should be a disambiguation, it can refer to several things other than the music group including a popular surname and of course peacocks. If ambiguity exists about a name the name should become a disambiguation, categories only work if they are precise and efficient. This is to say that "Pauw" should not be a redirect, but that the files inside of it of the band should be in "Category:Pauw (musical group)".
@Alexis Jazz: No, I've actually never seen the show, I actually don't have a television in my house (other than my mobile devices), though regarding the bird I've mostly seen them in (petting) zoos, so their wings were cut, so I've never seen one fly. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:17, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Proposal/conclusion
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. My proposal/conclusion is:

  1. Merge Category:Pauw (Band) and Category:Pauw into a new Category:Pauw (musical group).
  2. Make a redirect for Category:Pauw (Band) to Category:Pauw (musical group).
  3. Transform Category:Pauw into a disambigious page whith:
    1. Category:Pauw (musical group)
    2. Category:Jeroen Pauw
    3. Category:Peacocks (Pauwen in Dutch)
    4. Category:Pavo (official term in Latin and main category for peacock)
    5. Category:Pauw family
    6. Category:Pauw (surname)

Would that be correct? JopkeB (talk) 17:44, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Category:Bewilder

It looks like that this category is about the same pop group as Category:Bewilder (musical group); could these two categories be merged? JopkeB (talk) 08:44, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Delete in favour of Category:Bewilder_(musical_group). - Themightyquill (talk) 08:19, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
I agree:  Delete Category:Bewilder, keep Category:Bewilder_(musical_group). JopkeB (talk) 16:39, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
I also agree, note that we shouldn't move the musical group here since "Bewilder" is ambiguous (there is also "Bewilder Box" in Brighton). If possible a DAB should be created here but there doesn't appear to be anything with categories at the moment. Crouch, Swale (talk) 15:03, 15 December 2019 (UTC)
What is a DAB? JopkeB (talk) 18:03, 15 December 2019 (UTC)
I could not find a page with abbreviations used on WikimediaCommon (would be very helpful) but I guess a DAB is a Disambigious page. JopkeB (talk) 18:07, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Conclusion/proposal
My conclusion and proposal would be:

  1. Merge Category:Bewilder into Category:Bewilder_(musical_group).
  2. Redirect Category:Bewilder to Category:Bewilder_(musical_group). Make a DAB of this page as soon as it is needed.

Is this correct? JopkeB (talk) 18:07, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Category:FAMINE monument

Rename Category:Famine monument, Dublin or something similar. Themightyquill (talk) 09:17, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

The plaque on the sculpture reads "FAMINE", hence the original capped name (I presume. It was a long time ago). Some information that may help in deciding to change the name:
Category:Memorials to the Great Irish Famine suggests styling in line with perhaps Category:Irish Famine Memorial, Sydney‎, so Category:Famine memorial, Dublin, although there is also Category:Great Famine Memorial, Dublin‎. Another suggestion is to perhaps add the name of the sculptor (Rowan Gillespie), year of installation (1997), or specified location (Custom House Quay).
Kind regards, -- Deadstar (msg) 13:21, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
Specific location might be best. We could rename Category:Great Famine Memorial, Dublin to Category:Great Famine Memorial, St. Stephen's Green and move Category:FAMINE monument to Category:Famine memorial, Custom House Quay.

Category:The Albanian House

I'm not sure of the purpose of this category, or why it is hidden. Is this a personal project that should be a user category? Are these buildings included in some official list or compiled based on personal/arbitrary characteristics? Themightyquill (talk) 08:08, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

Hello themightyquill! This category was created as a common research project to combine the Wikimedia platform with GitHub, open street map and The Albanian House, which itself is a project that intends to document cultural heritage buildings and other buildings of historical and cultural value for Albania. (https://thealbanian.house ) I am an architect, specialized in Sustainable architecture and

SoniaBudini(the other user contributing like me in this category) is also an architect, therefore the inclusion of the subcategories is not arbitrary but based on our expertise, you can check here (https://thealbanian.house/bibliography) the bibliography we have used as a reference for the content of the project (Albanian books and articles referring the development of the most characteristic cultural heritage monuments, in the housing typology). We have uploaded more than 2000 photos in Wikimedia commons and most of them even have the status of cultural heritage monuments, were very poorly documented, or not documented at all. Probably, these categories are a little bit outside the usual structure, but all of them are very important to this documentation, and Wikimedia commons was the most appropriate platform because of the need also of all this information to be more public and accessible for everyone. – JoraK (talk) 09:27, 13 December 2019 (UTC)

JoraK I'm not suggesting deletion, but I would then suggest that it's a personal user category which should remain hidden, but not included in Category:Architecture of Albania. Alternately, if these images taken from your project, Category:The Albanian House could be renamed Category:Images from The Albanian House and placed in Category:Images by source. Of course, all the the subcategories should also be in Category:Houses in Albania. If it's appropriate you might create Category:Vernacular architecture of Albania too. If some of them have the status as cultural heritage monuments, I would urge you to categorize them as such too. - Themightyquill (talk) 14:56, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
I would also recomend to remove this cat from Category:Architecture of Albania.
Most sub-categories were already added to the respective subcategories of Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Albania and to the local categories like Category:Buildings in Berat or Category:Dukat … Like this, almost every sub-cat is also a sub-sub-sub-sub cat of Category:Architecture of Albania.
I'm working to get the remaining sub-cats properly categorized, too. --Albinfo (talk) 17:57, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
Okay, great. I removed it from Category:Architecture of Albania and I ll try to do the same as Albinfo with the sub-categories. Meanwhile, I am keeping The Albanian House as a hidden category.– JoraK (talk) 19:07, 13 December 2019 (UTC)

Um, the use is pretty self explanatory. These photos all have the same length-width ratio, so when an election infobox is being created, all photos fit equally such that the width of each candidate/party is the same, and also formatting issues (e.g. white space between photographs) are avoided. I spot-checked, and many of these seem more significant as an endpoint (even if they are an intermediate in the grand scheme of an organism's biochemistry). DMacks (talk) 01:10, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

Category:Font comparisons (Raster)

Is separation of radter images from a category common on Commons? I've only ever seen it for vector graphics. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 22:33, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

@1234qwer1234qwer4: I do not understand your query. Font comparisons are split e.g. into Category:Font_comparisons_(Vector) and Category:Font_comparisons_(Raster). Spliting the category makes sence because otherwise the categories are IMHO too big (>200). Spliting into Raster and Vector makes sence because if I want to find Fallback fonts of Wikimedia (File:SVG_Text_Font_Test.svg), then I search in Category:Font_comparisons and in Category:Font_comparisons_(Vector) but not in Category:Font_comparisons_(Raster).
Do you want to remove/rename/replace this category?  — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 20:22, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
In my opinion, having a category split up in raster and vector files is redundant because they are complementary and having one of them separate is enough as the files of the other type can be placed in the category directly. That's why normally there is only a vector subcat and not a raster one as well, I guess. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 20:26, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
@JoKalliauer and 1234qwer1234qwer4: unique (with category:Single spheres (raster graphics)) categorization. To be upmerged.--Estopedist1 (talk) 12:06, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
@Estopedist1: I do not like upmering if a category gets more than 200 Files.
@1234qwer1234qwer4: If I would like to derivative a vektor-file I would like to filter out all raster-versions in a category.
 — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 18:43, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
I don't see the problem: to do this, you would simply need to look for the files in Category:Font comparisons (Vector). Also, “I do not like upmerging” is not a valid argument for not upmerging, for which arguments of unification were brought up. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 18:50, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Category:Ninhydrin Reaction Mechanism

Some existing content is not the en:reaction mechanism (process by which reactants become intermediates and then on to products), but merely the reactants and products. It seems more consistent to unify "the reaction" at varying levels of detail, since we have lots of variants on that theme, than to separate out just "the mechanism of the reaction" from the Category:Ninhydrin parent. I agree with specifying "humans" on all these. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:40, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
I disagree on almost all this request. In most categories, humans are designated as "people" (subdivided into "men", "women", "children"...) without using "humans" which is implicit (except for "males" and "females" which could be ambiguous with other animalia and that could be requalified, but changing "human (fe)males" to "(fe)male humans" will not solve anything; and "humans" remains a category for the gender, that will continue to include "people" for all individuals, including "men", "women", "boys", "girls" which should stay unchanged, which will remain subcategories in "(fe)male humans" still useful for generic non-personal contents on a medical perspective, excluding all "social/political/functional/births/deaths" and "young/old people" perspectives which are related to indivuals or local/functional/social/political/cultural/ethnic/religious/legal groups of individuals).
So renaming "human (fe)male" (prefered to "(fe)males" alone) to "(fe)male humans" serves no purpose, and there's no need at all to generalize it to all other subtopics. And if there's no gender distinction, we should prefer "people" for local/social/political/.../functional topics on individuals, and definitely not "humans" reserved for medical/biological topics on the human species as whole, without any distinction of "race/ethnicity/nationality/body colors" which are purely socio-political and not at all scientific). verdy_p (talk) 13:44, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
@Themightyquill and Verdy p: I wish I hadn't created this category: it seems redundant, since Category:Men already exists. Jarble (talk) 18:12, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
@Jarble: It's not redundant. Men are adults. "Male humans" would include boys, who are not yet adults. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:09, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
"Males"(for humans) is more generic than "men" (that are male adult humans); "males" also include "boys" (for male children humans). There are several categories by age subdivided then by sex...
Also "males" vs. "females" is not a binary division for humans (and some other species), that may also be ambisexual (biologically, when not forced by a medical act), or hermaphrodite (two genders simultaneously, or changing naturally across life depending sometimes of social biochemical interactions for insects), even if hermaphrodism is very rare in humans (generally there's a biological gender dominating, even if there are some reduced attributes of the other sex: in many countries, the dominant gender was forced by law or medical acts or families, but modern democratic countries have forbidden these forced practices, now considered exactly like amputations, i.e. definitive punishments without volunteer law violation by the amputed person).
And "men" vs. "women" (only humans, excluding yound people that are still not binary determined) is a social classification that is refuted by transgenders (operated/treated or not: transexuality is part of the sexual identity and not sexual attraction or practices), and it is independant of the sexual identity (psychologic) or sexual attraction (heterosexual, homosexual/gay/lesbian, bisexual) or sexual practices with partners (asexual), social practices (single, partnered, married, polygam...). Sexuality of humans is complex! verdy_p (talk) 21:05, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
@Verdy p: Do you prefer "human (fe)males" to "(fe)male humans" in category names? Josh (talk) 20:27, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
Both would be OK for me, but "Human (fe)males..." is already used in a category that would not need to be renamed. The second option allows replacing the leading "(fe)male" adjective by other adjectives (adult, young, old, African) keeping the generic "humans" name at end (also replacable by names of other species: "dogs", "horses")...
It does not matter for me if others would prefer the other option (and anyway they are IMHO synonyms, that would merit to remain as soft-redirected categories for completeness, using a standard redirecting template tracking pages that would fall later in them, because both could be expected by users). verdy_p (talk) 20:42, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

Well, for starters, because that category didn't exist when I nominated this one. It was redirected to Category:Cityscapes by country until Elkost changed it in August 2020. The same is true of "views by city". - Themightyquill (talk) 13:22, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
  •  Oppose, too. --Elkost (talk) 09:20, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

I've added relevant categories to encourage discussion. What is the difference between Category:Views by city and Category:Cityscapes. If they aren't to be merged, which is the parent? - Themightyquill (talk) 13:25, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

These terms correlate as general and particular in philosophy: “view” is broader than more specific “cityscape”. En.wikipedia defines them:
“view” – as “sight or prospect...”;
“cityscape” (in visual arts) – as “artistic representation, such as a painting, drawing, print or photograph, of the physical aspects of a city or urban area”.
En.wiktionary gives additional notions:
for “view” – (other plus) something to look at, such as scenery;
for “cityscape” – “view of the buildings of a city, usually referring to a pictured landscape”. --Elkost (talk) 09:20, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
So it's easy as objectively deciding if something is artistic or not? =) I concede that there are differences between the terms, but I'm not sure the differences are large enough or precise enough to be useful for categorization on commons. - Themightyquill (talk) 22:53, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
@Orijentolog: What exactly is the purpose of putting a zoomed in image of a trash bin in Paris in a category called Category:Views of Paris? Put it in Category:Waste containers in Paris. Same with trees and streets. We've made a conscious decision not to use "Photographs of X" for every category X. Using "Views of X" instead is just as useless. The fact that it has proliferated to other countries doesn't make it any more useful, nor any reason to keep it. -- Themightyquill (talk) 12:00, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
@Themightyquill: I fully understand your opinion because I had the same one until few weeks ago, but in meanwhile I understood it's actually useful to have it as a container category for aerial photographs, satellite pictures, panoramics, cityscapes and viewpoints. OK, a trash bin is a bizarre example, better one would be a park or a street. Why to put hundreds of photos inside main category of these two, and then separate it by years or decades. IMHO categories like this or this worth more than chronological ones. Viewpoints should exist, and the best is to put them under the views, with other above-mentioned things. --Orijentolog (talk) 22:20, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
The fact that so many photos are only categorized by time and country or city is annoying, but it's done to avoid images from all over the world from piling up the category for in any given year or date. "Views of Paris" adds nothing to "Paris" - it's just shifting everything from one pile to another nearly identical pile. I might accept this if it were explicitly only for categories not images like Category:Photographs or Category:Views and tagged with {{Catcat}}, but that's not what's happening. -- Themightyquill (talk) 07:08, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
@Themightyquill: I 100% agree, that's also my idea (i.e. container category, as I said above). Having any photo in categories named views of [city] is a pure nonsense for me, even as a temporarily solution for proper subcat, because basically all photos have a particular viewpoint. Therefore my suggestion is to keep existing tree of views, properly tag it with {{CatCat}}, and by time it's not hard to make them empty with cat-a-lot. I hope @Elkost: and others will agree. --Orijentolog (talk) 20:30, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

  •  Oppose Subcats of Category:Views of ... allow us to specify various aspects of photography like viewpoints and perspectives. Cityscapes is a specific image genre similar to Landscapes (see description of Category:Landscapes) that comprises views of at least several buildings. It's just one type of views out of many, so Category:Cityscapes of XYZtown should be a subcategory of Category:Views of XYZtown. In Category:Views of Paris, the Category:Cityscapes of Paris, that would collect unspecified overviews, is still missing. --Sitacuisses (talk) 15:56, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
  •  Oppose arguments like Sitacuisses -- Triple C 85 | User talk | 23:47, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
@Triplec85 and Sitacuisses: If it's just used to hold different types of views (each in its own category) are you okay with putting {{Catcat}} on all the subfolders? -- Themightyquill (talk) 12:42, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
We should encourage the creation of certain subcats like "Cityscapes of" (which is only applicable in certain cases), but I'm not sure if that's the right way to do this. Putting {{Catcat}} in all the "Category:Views of ..." folders shouldn't be a general rule as long as we don't have an exhaustive set of subcats that are allowed there. It should be allowed to park images there until the most appropriate subcat gets created. "Basically all photos have a particular viewpoint" is not a valid argument to me; we need this branch of categories for images where either the viewpoint or a certain type of view is a distinctive feature. --Sitacuisses (talk) 13:47, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
  • Comment Just my opinion but if the point in this whole "views" category tree is to "allow us to specify various aspects of photography like viewpoints and perspectives" then it start with a category like Category:Photographs by viewpoint or Category:Photographs by perspective where the focus is "viewpoints" or "perspectives" and then be built out from there. The word "view" doesn't convey that the category trees is meant for types of "viewpoints" though. Let alone perspectives. In a lot of cases "view" just means "image." Regardless of how the image was taken. For instance do a search for "Views of Liteň." What comes up is literally every image of Liteň. While at the same time Category:Views of Liteň has an image of a bench and some signs? None of those images are "views" of anything and the files could as easily go in Category:Liteň. Most "view" categories are like that, file dumps for general images of a location. So this whole thing is a duplicate categorization system without a purpose or meaningful definition. That can't be said for Category:Photographs by viewpoint or Category:Photographs by perspective though. Everyone knows what a perspective is. --Adamant1 (talk) 17:11, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
  •  Question @Themightyquill, Микола Василечко, Elkost, Orijentolog, Triplec85, Sitacuisses, and Adamant1: Is there any resolution here or further discussion needed? I was about to close this as it is getting old and seemed obvious that there was no consensus to pursue a merge per the original post. However, I was not a participant in the discussion and maybe I am missing something. I'm happy to leave it open if there is further discussion, or to close if folks feel this one has run its course. Josh (talk) 14:03, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
Close. --Микола Василечко (talk) 16:40, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
OK, close. --Elkost (talk) 17:23, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping. I still have the same opinion about it that I did before, but there's a lot of "views" categories outside of this one. So it seems like something that needs settling further up in the category chain or something. So I guess go ahead and close it. --Adamant1 (talk) 23:09, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
@Joshbaumgartner: close. Category:Views by city by country is now widely established in commons in various countries and cities. Regardless of the frequent use in commons, many users also find it useful. So close and keep. -- Triple C 85 | User talk | 06:48, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

Category:Displays

Ambiguous title, and the category is full of inappropriate content. Rename to Category:Electronic displays, Category:Display screens, Category:Display devices or something else that gives more context. Themightyquill (talk) 15:32, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Since the category description specifically mentions screens, and since Category:Screens is also ambiguous, I'd lean towards Category:Display screens. - Themightyquill (talk) 15:35, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
@Themightyquill: Please see also discussion at Commons:Categories for discussion/2019/12/Category:1 display. Ubcule (talk) 20:02, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
I agree that this and several related categories seem ill-defined and it is very unclear how exactly they relate to each other, what belongs in what category, and what overlaps exist (I suspect many). I believe that Category:Displays, Category:Screens, Category:Video monitors, Category:Device monitors, Category:Computer monitors, Category:Computer screens and Category:Computer displays at a minimum should be considered as a whole and a schema for them developed comprehensively. I have tagged them all with this CfD for consideration. Josh (talk) 21:25, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
I've disambiguated Category:Screens with Category:Display screens but that still only gets us part of the way there. Given that the wikidata description is "output device for presentation of information in visual form", I think Category:Display devices is the way to go with this. -- Themightyquill (talk) 23:11, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
@Themightyquill, Ubcule, and Joshbaumgartner: I have proposed the following category scheme to fix the problem:
  • Display devices (output device for presentation of visual information)
    • Computer displays (if the device is a part of a computer, standalone or embedded)
    • Display screens (for the presentation of visual information in a display device, not the device itself)
      • Computer screens (if the visual information is presented in a computer monitor or a laptop a computer display)
    • Monitors (larger output device for presentation of visual information)
      • Computer monitors (if the monitor is a part of a computer)
        • Computer screens (for the presentation of visual information in a computer monitor or a laptop, not the device itself)
      • Video monitors (if the visual information is in the form of a video and not an image)
Device monitors will be merged to Monitors and Computer displays will be merged to Computer screens. I'll implement the proposal within seven days. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 11:36, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
@Sbb1413: So then a smartphone screen would be under display screens, a desktop monitor would be under computer monitors and a laptop screen would be under computer screens? Sorry if I've misunderstood... -- Themightyquill (talk) 13:13, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
@Themightyquill: The screens of smartphones and laptops are not separate devices. A display screen is always a part of a device. I've slightly modified the proposed definition of Computer screens for laptop screens. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 13:21, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
@Sbb1413: So then Category:Computer screens would include this (a photo of a screen) , but not this (a screenshot, to be filed under Category:Screenshots) and not this (which belongs under Category:Computer monitors) ? -- Themightyquill (talk) 13:41, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
Screenshots was already a subcat of Computer screens, which I have changed to Display screens since there are screenshots of smartphone screens. Both BootScreen.jpg and 86-DOS running assembler and HEX2BIN (screenshot).png belong to Computer screens, the latter may belong to the more specific Computer screenshots. 20020811203148 - NOI 2002.jpg does not belong to Computer screens since the image shows the entire computer monitor instead of just the screen belongs to both Computer screens and Computer monitors. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 13:48, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
@Themightyquill: I have added Computer displays in my proposed category scheme. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 14:34, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

Implemented my proposal. --Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 06:11, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

Category:Urban squares by country

Rename all sub-categories "Urban squares" to match this category. Avoid confusion with the shape. Themightyquill (talk) 10:27, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

I've just tagged a number of sub-categories to encourage discussion. - Themightyquill (talk) 10:02, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
@Themightyquill, HyperGaruda, and Explicit: The disambiguation is necessary for the root category. However, item of "squares" in the abstract meaning (as a shape) probably doesn't need a tree of geographical subcategories by country, by city etc. I.e., at all those levels, "urban squares" have no collision as "Squares". What can have potentially geographical subcategories are Square objects (however, they have no such subcategories yet); their category names are not confusable with urban squares. The only problem is that the different name of the root category name a bit impairs the naming consistency. But I'm not sure whether that's a strong enough reason for massive renaming at the expense of brevity. (As for inconsistency, we have also some other local deviations, for example Category:Plazas in México (state) and Category:Plazas in La Paz, Bolivia). Unification is desirable, but I'm not sure whether to prefer "urban squares" at all levels, or prefer the significantly predominant variant ("squares") at all levels with the exception of the root category. Both solutions are acceptable for me, but both are a bit controversial.
Btw, the main category Squares is crowded with unsorted content (376 images), although it is de facto a disambiguation page and should be almost empty. --ŠJů (talk) 09:39, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
I don't see the problem. Category:Squares in Italy only really contains Category:Urban squares in Italy and Category:Market squares in Italy. Category:Market squares is a subcategory of Category:Urban squares. - Themightyquill (talk) 22:52, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
Agree with Themightyquill's proposal, even if it is just for the sake of uniformity. --Schlosser67 (talk) 10:13, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

Clear consensus on implementing Themightyquill's proposal. --Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 07:24, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Category:Francis Xavier, Count of Montfort-Pfannberg

Category:Anton II, Count of Montfort-Pfannberg

I formally object to this redirect, as shown on User talk:Mhmrodrigues#Please stop re-numbering the nobles according to your own system! NearEMPTiness (talk) 18:32, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

@Jmabel: thoughts? Abzeronow (talk) 21:02, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
@Abzeronow: Nothing specific, because it is history I know nothing about. Also, very hard to tell what state was being objected to over four years ago. If this was ever a redirect, I can't tell to what (or did something redirect to this?). It would be very helpful if each party to the dispute would say how they think things should be, instead of us just knowing someone didn't like the state of it in December 2019
Wikidata isn't much help here, because the same people seem to have been involved, and no one seems to be providing relevant citations for any form of the name. No English-language Wikipedia article. I see the German goes for "Anton II. von Montfort". It cites no online sources for this name, and I'm certainly not in a position (from Seattle) to track down German-language print sources. I'd say we need to find some proper citations to settle this. I'm perfectly willing to AGF and trust a paper source if someone quotes it directly as to how it alludes to this person.
Pinging @NearEMPTiness, Mhmrodrigues - Jmabel ! talk 21:27, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
At the time of this request, a man on a mission tried to translate German names of aristocrats to English names, which could not be found elsewhere. Translating German names of persons boldly to English isn't an improvement in the case of little known aristocrats. Worst of all, he started to re-number them by his own numbering system, which contradicted the historcally known numbers. NearEMPTiness (talk) 07:41, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
Please check Category talk:Anton II, Count of Montfort-Pfannberg. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 07:44, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
Can you cite some sources that show this man should be known as "Anton III. von Montfort" rather than what the category is now? Abzeronow (talk) 17:51, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
I am still very much concerned about the sentence: "I'm numbering only the members of the family who actually ruled some part of Montfort, and not all members of the family." However, the discussion started quite a while ago, and I do not remember any specific details. From my point of view, the discussion can be closed, until someone provides some reliable references. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 19:20, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Not done: per NearEMPTiness, can be reopened if reliable references why the change to current category name is wrong are provided. --Abzeronow (talk) 19:38, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Category:Illegal immigration

Category name is inherently POV. It is used for many images where there is no proof that the people depicted were violating the law. Daniel Case (talk) 05:45, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

I see your point, but I think many of the subcategories fit. DACA, for example is specifically for people who were illegally brought into the US as children. Can we maybe just remove the individual images, or do we really need to delete or rename the whole category? The politically correct term in the US is "undocumented", for what that's worth. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:32, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

Plowing or ploughing. I don't care which one, but we should use one rather than a mix of each. Themightyquill (talk) 21:20, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
