Commons:FAQ
That page should probably at least be linked, if it doesn't make this page redundant (the content could be merged into there and into other pages). Prototyperspective (talk) 00:09, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
- I think they are different enough in approach that cross-linking is the right way to go. A lot of sections here would be very useful places to refer certain questions that are actually frequently asked at the help desk. Very few at COM:FAQ are. - Jmabel ! talk 03:36, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

- @ReneeWrites: Agreed, will do; probably mark it as an "essay" for now though, to be clear, I continue to welcome others' contributions to this page. - Jmabel ! talk 20:54, 5 February 2025 (UTC)

Glossary
@Jmabel: I'd like to include a short selection of less-straightforward but commonly-used items from the main glossary page in the how-to article. The glossary itself is incredibly broad and contains a lot of words that aren't jargon but just regular words (like "URL" or "Video game"), but that also kind of dilutes the focus on it being a glossary for Commons. I also think VRT or ANU are relevant terms - ANU is used with regular frequency in discussion spaces (be it talk pages, or at the Village Pump) and will be relevant to anyone involved with the community itself, and contacting VRT is how you can confirm you received permission from a copyright holder to upload their content to Commons under a free license (which is not currently included in this guide, but I assume it will be later on). Copyvio, DR and FoP are also common terms I feel warrant a mention. ReneeWrites (talk) 22:54, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
- Searching is easy, once you are on the right page. And I really think any list we have here is in danger of expanding to a glossary in its own right. (FWIW, I'd never have put "video game" in the glossary but since it's entirely a reference page, not something anyone reads end-to-end, cruft is pretty harmless there.)
- Almost no one hears of ANU unless they get in trouble, or VRT unless they personally are significantly involved in uploading third-party images (I'm guessing not one user in 20 is ever concerned with either). "copyvio" and "DR" are of broad concern. "FoP" is probably somewhere in between.
- If we are going to gloss some terms here, we should certainly try to limit ourselves to things that at least 25% of active users are likely to care about at some point in their first year or so on Commons. Otherwise, in the context of a page like this one (which, unlike the glossary, is meant to be read), the list just becomes cruft. - Jmabel ! talk 23:14, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
- Is it alright if I add just those three items to the section on jargon? ReneeWrites (talk) 23:35, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
- @ReneeWrites: Sure. - Jmabel ! talk 02:43, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
