English: An engraving is an object of art resulting from the act of engraving. Engraving involves incising a design on to a hard, usually flat, surface by cutting grooves into it. It originated from the technology and practices needed to make woodcuts for printmaking.
  • Engraving (printing plate): Copper or some other metal can be engraved to produce an intaglio printing plate, which is then used for printing the engraved image on to paper.
  • Engraving (print or impression): The result is itself often called an engraving or print, though it is more accurately termed an impression. A familiar example is paper money.
  • Engraving (object decoration): The technology of engraving can also be used to create purely artistic designs on objects made of metals (for example, gold, silver and steel) or other materials like glass and lacquer.
