• @Ecrusized: I don't see any sign of edit warring or vandalism. Also, I question your 22:25, 2 December 2024 upload of what seems to be a quite different file. As you say, this is highly viewed, and it doesn't seem appropriate to change to a very different map, covering a much wider area.   I understand your concerns. I have requested auto patrol protection pre-emptively to prevent any edit/revert warring that may arise in the future, similar to the Hamas-Israel war map. The old map had became unusable as the scope of the offensive expanded beyond its border, and like you've pointed out, its showing the south, and the SDF offensive in eastern Deir ez-Zor region that started today. Requesting auto patrol protection for File:Syrian Civil War map.svg & File:Syrian opposition map November 2024.svg

Requesting protection on both of these files which have recently come under heavy edit warring. Any constructive edit by citing sources is instantly reverted on both these files. Multitude of users are changing how the control of this country should look like depending on their preference, without citing any source, what-so-ever. I believe auto patrol protection would stop the edit warring, and allow constructive editing, mainly citing sources, to take place.

Just to give an example on how ridiculous this file has gotten, it currently asserts that one of the Syrian rebel groups, RCA, controls 1/3rd of the country, even the capital Damascus. Despite the fact that this group has just 500 fighters. Ecrusized (talk) 11:03, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

  @The Squirrel Conspiracy: I was in the process of updating it based on "syria.liveuamap.com". Like I've said in my request, the main problem with both these files is that whoever is editing the file seems to be doing so based on their own opinion, which is direct misinformation. I have tried editing in the past, but I was instantly reverted. I was hoping this temporary protection would stop that until a verified version could be used to change it. I'd request you to at least give a few days of protection to this file to stop the back and worth changes without any reference what-so-ever.

File:Map-TurkicLanguages.png was full protected in 2013 by User:Hedwig in Washington. Since they haven't edited here since 2022, it would appear impractical to ask them on their talk page to lower protection.

I've received a request at COM:OWR Commons:Overwriting existing files/Requests#Allow overwriting of File:Map-TurkicLanguages.png to add a revision that adds Kosovo to the list of minority Turkish speaking countries. So should protection be lowered to autoconfirm and I add the template or should it be lowered to autopatroller so this edit request could be done by an autopatroller? Perhaps they were a bit brief/succinct. I really have no clue why I am being accused of using a bot. Anyone can examine my edits and see there are subtle changes sometimes and definitely the time between edits contain randomness because they were done by hand in the provided web editor. The only "automation" is human automation at my keyboard. @Uzume: Before I posted here, in this edit, I asked you to "Please stop" "modifying multiple closed discussions" that I had noticed. I sought that you would stop that behavior, which is in violation of established norms. You did not respond, and instead kept going, making more such changes to closed discussions on my watchlist without minor flag, so I reported you here. The closure of each such discussion told you not to modify it, so why did you? What is so wrong with {{Cite}} with a single parameter, "[[:Image:", "accessdata" in citations, etc. that makes you feel that you need to violate such injunctions without minor flags? Changing of "[[:Image:" to "[[:File:" is a telltale sign of AWB's standard general fixes, so I don't believe that you are not using automation. I am sorry if my response was slightly delayed. The only automation I am using is browser (Firefox at the moment) based search and replace or the same from the provided wiki editor (under "Advanced"; "search and replace" icon on the right that looks like a magnifying glass). Why do I use search and replace? Well, I do sometimes manually paste during a search in a page but because it is easier and directly provided? @Jeff G.: How? I am not sure how to explain how to use Firefox. I click "edit" on the page. I press Ctrl-F and search for something with the "highlight" checked and then use Ctrl-V to paste. Then I move to the edit summary and type a few characters of a summary I have recently used and choose one of the autocomplete values I used recently that applies, check the "minor" box (now) and then press "Save". It is a fair bit of work (longer now that I have to check "minor" all the time). Why? Well would you rather I consolidate {{quote}} to {{cite}} the other way around? I choose this way because it seems more standard across WMF sites and {{cite}} tends to have other meanings at other sites. Also {{quote}} has 47k+ transclusions where as {{cite}} only has 600 (I think it was just over 1k before; so it was a smaller job too). —Uzume (talk) 09:58, 15 December 2024 (UTC)

 Comment For the record, here is a reminder of what happened. Jeff warned Uzume at 13:36, 13 December UTC. Uzume continued to make semi-automated edits. So I blocked Uzume for one day. Hmm, I was somewhat bold and removed all of the deletion requesting tags; the licensing and copyright related things as misplaced (I checked the source Flickr stream: the motifs and the EXIF / camera equipment were consistent with a legitimate licensing) and the standard DR per COM:SNOW as the given rationale was already discussed and refuted. I put the film up for deletion for being a copyright violation (it's not public domain until 1st January, it also contains a modern Universal ident), and for having been uploaded by an LTA user with a history of hoaxing Marx Brothers content.

User:FreidrichHandlebar registered with Commons on the 24th to immediately suggest keeping the file because it's nearly January, and said that they can personally vouch for it not having any hoax content in it. Today they removed the deletion request before the discussion had been closed, falsely claiming that a verdict had been reached. They've made no other edits.

MarxesandComedy had uploaded File:The Cocoanuts (1929) Marx Brothers.webm earlier in 2024, and this file was put up for a DR after their block. While that DR was pending, DrMarvinGrey tried to remove the DR template from the file, nominated it as a featured media candidate, and added a template falsely saying that it was already a featured media file.

Both accounts have subsequently and unrelatedly pestered Commons users with apparently unprompted user talk page questions asking if it's "time" or "too early" to edit the lead section of enwiki's 2025 article to summarise world events (, ). That exact kind of lead edit was attempted and reverted multiple times by an Oatsandcream sock last month (eg. ). Perhaps their IP is blocked on enwiki, as neither account has attempted to edit there yet.

DrMarvinGrey has also asked someone to add Generation Beta to a svg diagram, an edit that earlier sock account CheeseLactose made in png form at File:Generations graph - update 2025.png last month. Belbury (talk) 15:49, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

@Ysabella: Ah, that's cascading protection. We automatically protect certain files for other wikis - generally anything that's on their front page - so it could have been on their front page at the time and then was cycled out in the meantime. The protection won't show on the individual file, hence Abzeronow's answer. It's... not the best system, but like everything around here, if it works, we have other more important problems for too few active users to work on. You can see the timing of a lot of the files uploaded by that account and then see how it is immediately followed by an edit by Skulljujos in eswiki to add the uploaded picture to articles. For instance, check the upload time of this file: File:Eliana Molineros Governor of Guayas Ecuador 2025.jpg, and check at this edit to add that file to eswiki (), literally two minutes after the Commons upload. It looks like that image naming format from the CDN used by en:Redbubble. So I would imagine any file with f8f8f8 in the file name is a copyvio. IP user creating empty number categories

Hi, I have came across a number of IP address, which I suspect originated from the same person, that was creating empty categories for numbers. For example, Category:7938_(number), which was deleted today but it was recreated again. They sometimes also changes the number in existing categories into the wrong one, see this for example: Revision of Category:Number_7967_on_objects. They would also make an edit and undo it, and repeating multiple times. These are the four IPs I encountered so far, there could be more:

• The current {{Aviation month}} template, before or after repetitive reverts by Militum professio scriniarii, has only one parameter, which is {{{4}}}, and the {{Worldmonth}} uses the exact same code as {{Aviation month}}. It means a disorder could never happen even when using {{{Worldmonth}}. I have used it on Category:February 2024 in aviation and Category:December 2024 in aviation (, ) but both are correctly sorted when browsing Category:2024 in aviation. So the user's revert on the documention page must be motivated by prejudice rather than reason. And his revert on the template itself makes the template anachronistic and less sophisticated; one cannot jump from Category:November 1917 in aviation to the next year after his revert. Why does a single user has the absolute rights to deny other users creative edits? And he never responds to the talk pages. B4U Logo Sock Farm

There is a sock farm currently evading global locks to upload B4U logos here. They appear most recently to be centred around Bakelmuhammad0, though doubtless pre-date that editor.

Is there a technical mechanism that admins would wish to deploy to seek to prevent this set of disposable SPAs from spawning yet another SPA to circumvent global locks, please? If so, please just deploy it silently, no need to place the result here. @Timtrent: Sockpupetters can be blocked for abusing multiple accounts. A request for check user can be done for blocking the range and sleeper accounts. Request unprotection

I would like to request unprotection of File:BlankMap-World.svg and all the blank derivatives of this map. The thing is that the current script of this file, even if hidden, includes the borders of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) which no longer exist as a separate entity since 2023. I have previously done a job of editing the derivatives of this file, correcting the borders, but finally noticed that the issue might the the blank version(s) of this map that needs to be updated. I don't really think so. Nothing in those notices indicates any possibility of a sanction. Barring blatant vandalism, egregious harassment, etc., we need at least one explicit warning. The edit you linked adds the word "warning". I have no idea why you say that "was in vain". Are you saying that alone is sufficient warning? I think there is a strong consensus among the admins that it is not.

Again: very often people violate copyright because they don't understand how it works, not because they are willfully doing something wrong. Someone needs to engage with them so that they understand what is going on, not just punish them like a mysterious force from above. At some point, failure to achieve competency becomes a reason for blocking in its own right, but we can't assume users will arrive competent.

Copyright is complicated, and people are taught almost nothing about it in school. I grew up the son of a publisher, and I've been involved in Wikimedia projects over 20 years, and had published a fair amount even before that, and I still keep learning new things about copyright, especially in countries other than my own.

They say that for everyone that asks a question openly, probably ten people had that same question and didn't ask. Think about that when you consider how many really naive questions/presumptions about copyright we get on the help desk and VP/C: "It must not be copyrighted, because there was no notice," "It's really old, like from the 1980s, so it must be out of copyright by now", "the company that published it no longer exists, so it can't be copyrighted", or above all, "It has to be in the public domain, I found it three different places online". These are not people being disingenuous. These are people we have to help learn if they are going to be useful here. - Jmabel ! talk 19:24, 8 February 2025 (UTC)

I take it that the differences are about (1) whether to recognize Kosovo as independent of Serbia, and therefore with a non-Slavic official language and (2) whether to mark some borders within Ukraine for de facto control (or perhaps Russian territorial claims, its hard to say which because there is almost no overt discussion.

It amuses me perversely that it seems that the party that wants the map to show the almost totally internationally unrecognized claims of separate status in Ukraine is the same one that wants to ignore the recognition of Kosovo by the majority of countries in the UN. (Also, assuming we should show Kosovo as a country: I'm pretty sure Serbian is co-official in Kosovo.)

At some point, if we cannot get agreement on one map, we probably need to split this, because not all Wikipedias should be forced to one or the other view of the sovereignty issues. I imagine we could come up with a form that somehow marks disputed sovereignty.

I'm guessing this is far from the only map where we have some question about showing these particularly places as separate states or not. Is there any solution that has been applied successfully elsewhere? - Jmabel ! talk 05:29, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

I think splitting the work into a new map is probably a good alternative rather than constant reverting. The arguments stated for not including Kosovo seem to be entirely based on international recognition, though as Jmabel stated the same parties are fine with showing completely unrecognised separatist claims in Ukraine. There's sort of a version from 21:30, 8 November 2014. It shows Kosovo bordered, but unshaded. This version also has the problem of thick borders and the unrecognised state of Transnistria, which is a whole other can of worms.
As for version which include Kosovo *both* shaded and bordered, there doesn't seem to be any in the file history. Zinderboff (talk) 12:03, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

Belated remark: part of the problem on Kosovo is that the term "national language" isn't necessarily the same as "official language". I suspect we want a distinct shading (maybe diagonal stripes or such) for Kosovo, because while Serbian is co-official, if "national language" is supposed to be singular then that would certainly be Albanian.

FWIW, just to show how complicated this can get, the U.S. has no official language, and the many efforts to make English "official" have always failed; still, I don't think anyone would doubt that insofar as there is a "national language" there, it's English. - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

I recommend an immediate block and speedy keep for all their seemingly baseless deletion requests. FWIW, as someone who does a fair amount of night photography myself, I decided to check whether these photos are really all that useless. On the whole, they are, but a few might be salvageable. For example, I took the liberty of taking a minute or so to rework File:Full HK Island 02.jpg. Probably still not worth keeping, and this user/puppeteer seems to be uploading pretty useless stuff as everyone has thought, but more generally: the fact that a photo is very dark doesn't always mean it's unsalvageable. - Jmabel ! talk 16:55, 13 February 2025 (UTC)

I don't care about the intro. Intros are unnecessary in most cases, provided the Wikidata infobox is complete. Basically, this category should include Category:National cycling routes in Denmark, Category:Cycling in Bornholm, Category:Infrastructure in Bornholm as parental categories. @A.Savin Please explain to us why you think a cycling route is something physical. Before I started Wikipedia/Commons I was heavily editing OpenStreetMap including all kinds of relations including the Bornholm Rundt route. A lot of contributors to OSM took years to really understand the concept of relations.
