This was a popular rag, especially in its song version, by prolific composer Albert Gumble. In 1910 a French play, "Chantecler" premiered in Paris and became quite popular. It featured as the main character Chantecler the rooster (chantecler means rooster in French; chanticleer is the English equivalent) with the actor dressed in a full rooster costume as depicted on the piano cover. Albert Gumble was a career pianist, composer and also worked as a manager for publisher Jerome H. Remick. His older brother Mose Gumble was also a composer and manager for Remick. This rag and its song version were both published in 1910 by Remick in New York City.
