Your task is pending...
Hello.
The "Your task is pending..." message remains displayed and the conversion does not works. ComputerHotline (talk) 16:59, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

- @Jeff G.: I tried to upload https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=692fNrkhZzU, with {{PD-USGov-Military-Air National Guard}} + {{YouTube CC-BY}} licenses, but it didn't work. // Kakan spelar (talk) 19:50, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

- There has been a huge incident yesterday on WMCS related to NFS, I fear it broke video2commons as all the encoding video instances are listed in the upcoming maintenance next Monday. @Andrewbogott do you confirm? I'm reluctant to do anything that might complicate your task further. vip (talk) 21:52, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

- v2c rate limited by youtube again? RoyZuo (talk) 11:26, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if it's a rate limit, as I've queried over and over again for several days and I never get in. I think maybe certain channels will not allow it, as Jeff G. suggested above. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 22:02, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- You are logged in here (i.e. logged in to the video2commons tool via OAuth with your WMF credentials), but the bot that then queries YouTube is not itself logged in at YouTube. This is what is causing the problem. I have experienced the same problem many times for many days now, unfortunately. I have been able to get around it the very few times in the past that it's happened by just trying again later, but it's not working repeatedly now when I'm trying to port over any video from the White House's YouTube account, even tho I was able to do it several days ago. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 22:01, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- Does v2c need manual update when yt-dlp gets updated?
- this youtube login problem seems to be resolved by the latest ytdlp version. i dont know which version of ytdlp v2c is using. RoyZuo (talk) 17:57, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- Is there a solution for it? TaronjaSatsuma (talk) 19:32, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
- Strangely, in feb so far, apparently, 5 videos from youtube could be uploaded. like v2c could work for youtube very limitedly? RoyZuo (talk) 13:41, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- Tracked in GitHub
toolforge/video2commons/issues/237
So V2C currently is broken due to some YouTube changes and can't be used? I think this could maybe be solved by appending sth like this to the yt-dlp command --cookies-from-browser firefox
and having a YT account for video2commons with the cookie on that server. Created the issue. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:44, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
Please add this as a standard error
Something like:
- Error: An exception occurred: DownloadError: b'ERROR: [youtube] TWZu9709D3A: Sign in to confirm you\xe2\x80\x99re not a bot. This helps protect our community. Learn more'
And preferably add a reason. I would add it myself, but I feel like I may interfere with the documentation and don't want to undermine what the maintainers are doing. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 22:03, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
V2C still broken
After around a month, it's still broken and can't upload any video – please identify the problem and fix it. See Commons:Village pump#Video2commons still broken. --Prototyperspective (talk) 12:30, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- V2C works fine, I'm able to import videos every day. What problem are you referring to? Also please remind I'm an unwillingly volunteer to maintain it because no one else stepped up when it was broken last year, so help from anyone is welcome to troubleshoot and fix problems. (In the long term I'd like the WMF to adopt the video upload feature). vip (talk) 12:59, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- Was just about to ping you 😅
- Most likely referring to the problem of youtube urls failing, which is probably the same as https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/issues/10128 .
- Do you know if yt-dlp that v2c uses needs to be manually updated or something? Because newest version of yt-dlp running on my computer can download youtube videos. RoyZuo (talk) 13:02, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- I don't see any recent failed task with "Sign in to confirm" in its error message. @Prototyperspective can you please give me more details? Thank you. vip (talk) 18:19, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- Are you supposed to be able to see some message about failed tasks when any fail? I think I tried a few times in the meantime and it never worked and also the first report here seems to be from 8 January 2025. One other user is having the same problem per the VP thread but I thought it would be dysfunctional for all users. Like RoyZuo, I can download videos with yt-dlp if I use
--cookies-from-browser firefox
. The only further detail I can give is video ID L6dheXv_pmY. Prototyperspective (talk) 19:17, 21 March 2025 (UTC) - @Don-vip no, they fail before becoming tasks.
- try pasting any youtube video url into v2c, you will get the error.
- each month only <5 uploads from youtube occasionally get through. i dont know how they succeed. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?tagfilter=OAuth+CID%3A+394&title=Special:RecentChanges ctrl+f youtube.com . RoyZuo (talk) 19:32, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- Ah ok I get it. I have to see how/when the download occurs in this case. vip (talk) 20:32, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- for youtube url
- v2c now reports the error right after clicking "next".
- i assume v2c workflow is like this? first fetch metadata from youtube given the link. and because of this error, it could not fetch any data but get "[youtube] fRo8KXlqer4: Sign in to confirm you\xe2\x80\x99re not a bot..."
- 1 solution is to update to newest version.
- alternative solutions include rather complex settings (at least appears so for me).
- another suggestion from me would be... change yt-dlp back to https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl and see if youtube-dl now works better. XD RoyZuo (talk) 22:09, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

New day, new error
when trying to upload using the now updated V2C, it gives me a different error than before (at least it doesn't belive I'm a bot):
Error: An exception occurred: DownloadError: b'ERROR: [youtube] KWFyg_I2AXY: Requested format is not available. Use --list-formats for a list of available formats'
the video requested was this one from YouTube. Juwan (talk) 20:22, 28 March 2025 (UTC)
- pinging @Don-vip and @RoyZuo who helped in the thread above. Juwan (talk) 20:33, 28 March 2025 (UTC)
- This one was easy, just a matter of upgrading yt-dlp from 2025.3.21 to 2025.3.27. Probably fixed by https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/pull/12761.

I was uploading a 226 MB video (mp4), but it failed with this error. Joofjoof (talk) 00:26, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Joofjoof Have you tried it again? It is an error that happens from time to time unrelated to the upload system. Raymond (talk) 06:20, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

Failling for flickr
i just tried a flickr video. gave me
An exception occurred: DownloadError: b'ERROR: unable to download video data: HTTP Error 429: Too Many Requests'
v2c seems to be working for other websites though. RoyZuo (talk) 13:39, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- it's the same error if i use the direct flickr video url e.g. https://live.staticflickr.com/video/48044468858/336f21bb49/1080p.mp4 .
- toolforge server blocked by flickr? RoyZuo (talk) 18:47, 8 April 2025 (UTC)

Terms of service of source sites?
Does video2commons respect the terms of service of YouTube and other source sites it downloads from? YouTube's terms of use quite clearly forbid automated downloads without written permission from YouTube... This is a hard blocker for ever fully integrating video2commons under Wikimedia's operations. --Brooke Vibber (WMF) (talk) 17:37, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Brooke Vibber (WMF) https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T236446 I dont know what happend to those talks years ago. RoyZuo (talk) 18:26, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks... having read that: looks like no, we don't have an exception arranged with YouTube. We can fully expect frequent rate-limiting or blocking of any Wikimedia Toolforge or other IPs doing forbidden-by-YouTube downloads and it's unlikely we will ever be able to integrate this as a Wikimedia-run tool. --Brooke Vibber (WMF) (talk) 19:31, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
- Video2Commons is not an automated download tool. It downloads the video the user tasks it to. Prototyperspective (talk) 20:27, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
- The tasks are submitted manually by the users, some of whom are loathe to shell out US$13.99/month for YouTube Premium, plus all the necessary hardware expenditures and learning for conversion to a free format. I wonder if YouTube is paying the MP4 patentholders for use of their patented codec technologies. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:39, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
Help:Server-side upload
Hi, For some unknown reason, for some large files, V2C requests a Server-side upload (SSU). However I have been told that this service is deprecated. Last October 2024, I processed several films and requested a SSU. Now the files are not available anymore, so all this work is lost. :((( Yann (talk) 09:13, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Yann: Mine that worked for RoyZuo was phab:T357403 for uploading https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpnOJaZlPaI to File:City Driving 4K- Kraków Poland 2024.webm, but no one has yet reviewed the license visible here. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 09:49, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
- OK, I got the explanation here. So in short, V2C requests a SSU when it gets a 'backend-fail-internal' error. So SSU requests are not directly linked to the file size, as I thought. And indeed, some of the videos which were sent to SSU can be uploaded now (e.g. File:Life with Father (1947) by Michael Curtiz.webm, 2.21 GB). Yann (talk) 19:09, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

Discussion on adding some functionality to the Upload Wizard
