[v]Character list (PDF : en, fr)
This block contains characters for all forms of the Syriac alphabet, including Estrangelo (historical common base, shown by default in ISO/IEC/Unicode code charts, for the two next modern variants), Western Syriac (or Serto, also called “Jacobite” or “Maronite”), and Eastern Syriac (or Madnhâyâ, also called “Assyrian” or “Nestorian“”).
Syriac format control character
Marks the beginning of a Syriac abbreviation. The rendered sign normally extends above all the following Syriac letters, numerals, and combining diacritics, as an horizontal segment usually marked with dots or short vertical strokes on the right side, the center, and the left side. Otherwise it takes a narrow form as a short horizontal segment with an additional vertical line attached below it.

Basic Syriac letters
Syriac letters are displayed below in four contextual forms from right to left: isolated, initial, medial and final (for some letters, some form may be identical to another, notably isolated vs. initial, or medial vs. final).
These forms can be specified selectively in plain text by prepending and/or appending a zero-with non-joiner (ZWNJ, U+200C) or zero-with joiner (ZWJ, U+200D), in order to override their default joining behavior.
The Arabic tatweel sign (U+0640) is also used discretionarily in the Syriac script as a mute spacing sign to extend the joining stroke on the baseline between letters in order to justify Syriac texts, or used as a base holder for combining diacritics.
