Emblem is not the official version

{{Editrequest}} The emblem is not the official version according to https://fm.gov.om/about-oman/state/flag-emblem-and-national-anthem/. Could someone address this issue? The new file should be 100% SVG. Ideally, the person who vectorizes the improved emblem should use a Creative Commons license (as is often seen on a lot of flag files, including File:Flag of Kinshasa, DRC.svg ) VexilAlpaca (talk) 23:14, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

I have now uploaded a version of the flag so that the emblem is closer to the official version.
I request that the current file be replaced with File:Flag of Oman (official).svg and that the file for the national emblem should be extracted from the linked file. VexilAlpaca (talk) 00:05, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
@VexilAlpaca: sorry but your newly uploaded file (File:Flag of Oman (official).svg) is poorly vectorized.
  • The file is huge (145kb).
  • The outside of the swords should presumably be simple smooth Bézier curves plotted with a minimal number of points, but instead you have used jagged lines made of hundreds of points; this is usually a sign that the vectorization has been done automatically from a bitmap image.
  • The small rectangles are not rectangular. They have sides are not parallel and some of the corners have been arbitrarily rounded.
  • The circles are not circular.
  • No effort has been made to apply perfect symmetry where applicable.
  • The rounded corners on the two large white rectangles should presumably be done with perfect 90 degree arcs. The rounding you have used has a sloppy hand drawn appearance to it.
  • etc, etc.
Yes I am fussy. But I also admit that I don't often attempt to vectorize flags that have this much hand drawn artwork. I prefer to work on flags that can be laid out with mathematics. MapGrid (talk) 02:48, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
The red bar at the hoist on the new version also seems to be a different size than the current file. Is there a construction sheet to confirm this change? HapHaxion (talk / contribs) 15:08, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

@VexilAlpaca, MapGrid, and HapHaxion: I located the official flag and did some measurements, then compared to the 2 flags in question:

The table's caption
observation official flag File:Flag of Oman.svg File:Flag of Oman (official).svg
flag's width to height ratio 7:4 2:1 2:1
image to stripe height ratio 3:1 3:1 3:1
image to bar width ratio 3:1 3:1 4:1
emblem width to stripe height ratio 1:1 0.87:1 1:1
emblem width to height ratio 1.067:1 1:1 1.11:1
top of the emblem to stripe height ratio 1:9 1:6 1:10
center of the emblem is in the middle of the bar
bottom of the emblem almost aligned with the bottom of the bar
size of the file 17kb 134kb
It looks like in photographs of the flag (like this one the width of the vertical bar does not change with width of the flag, but it does seem like it is varying a lot. I think the File:Flag of Oman (official).svg probably has a better layout and proportions, but it is much larger and I think we should use it. --Jarekt (talk) 04:54, 26 May 2024 (UTC)
@Jarekt: I've found the most recent version of the royal decree specifying the flag. Per the decree, all three of the horizontal stripes are of equal height, and the width-height ratio is 7:4, with a standard 10 metre mast. The horizontal bar on the hoist is one-third the width. The red colour is Banto – New ORM. C2X Red, while the green is Banto – New ORM. CNE 354 C2X – Green. The flag also has three additional width-height ratios for 6 metre and 12 metre masts (for streets and in front of buildings, respectively), which are 2:1 and 3:1.7, respectively, and for tables (26:17). See also https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/om'.html. HapHaxion (talk / contribs) 14:17, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
@HapHaxion: thank you for looking into this. Your link to the royal decree was very helpful. My read is that by law the red vertical bar is supposed to be 1/3 of the width, that would disqualify the File:Flag of Oman (official).svg which is proposed to replace current File:Flag of Oman.svg as a preferred version. The current version i am sure can be improved, but by a version that meets basic requirements. I will close the current edit request as  Not done, but please ping me if a better version is created. --Jarekt (talk) 02:04, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

inverted colors in the emblem

Official flag with white-on-red emblem

@Jarekt @HapHaxion Sorry to open this discussion again but if we're taking the official website of the foreign ministry of oman, the emblem's colors used on all the flags of Oman here are inverted. The white should be red, and the red should be white 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 09:24, 30 May 2025 (UTC)

@Abo Yemen: Thank you for alerting us about this issue. I agree that the flag on the official website of the foreign ministry of oman has emblem using white lines on red background and all the SVG flags on Wikipedia use red lines on white background. However our version of the flag seem to be consistent with the colors of the official flag in the photographs, like this (2014) or this (2025). In this photo, the dagger is red-on-white and the swords are white-on-red. Either way, we should have alternative red-on-white and white-on-red versions and than decide which is more official. --Jarekt (talk) 14:22, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
Hello @Jarekt, I don't think that the flags used in the images you've linked followed the sultanate's flag guide thing, and probably copied the flag from Wikipedia... (Which is something lots of governments around the world are doing). If anything, we should use the flag specifications on the sultanate's website, or at least use it on File:Flag of Oman (official).svg 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 06:23, 31 May 2025 (UTC)

The 2015 photo is different from the Wikipedia SVG at the time. I have a description of the emblem as it was revised in 1985, and the flag was amended accordingly. The emblem described is white with red detail and a white fimbriation. In 1995, the flag was changed so that the stripes at the fly were equal. A Webchantier Adobe Illustrator file from 1997 (, click “Flags, Coats of arms” then select O) shows the emblem as white with red detail, and equal stripes at the fly. The World Flag Database website in 2000 showed an image of the flag with the emblem in white. Both the 22 May 2004 decree and the amendment in 20 February 2020 show the flag emblem as red with white details. So I presume there was a change with the inversion of the flag emblem’s colors on 22 May 2004 which was not noticed by the vexillological community. Anyway, I might have to contact the FOTW mailing list to see if such a change did indeed happen. 73.75.170.176 00:48, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
