David jouant de la harpe devant Saül. Assis et vu à mi-corps, Saül cache derrière un rideau la moitié de son visage; son air sombre indique l'agitation de son esprit. Une tunique de drap d'or et un manteau de velours cramoisi composent son vêtement. Plus bas que Saül, est placé David jouant de la harpe; on ne voit que la partie supérieure de son corps. Tableau capital où l'énergie du pinceau égale la vigueur du coloris, où Rembrandt, on peut bien le dire, a une physiognomie pittoresque qui est toute à lui. Cette œuvre magistrale est de la plus belle époque du grand peintre; il y a déployéune puissance dramatique digne de Shakspeare et une incomparable magie de couleur et de clair-obscur.
